The Price of Blood

Rowan’s POV

The wolves stopped howling. The forest became silent again. Too silent.

I held my son against my chest while Kael stood beside me. Damon was several steps away. He looked exhausted. Blood covered his shirt. His face was bruised. Yet he kept watching our son. Not reaching. Not demanding. Just watching.

The ancient silver wolf remained in front of us. Kael stepped forward. You said the true war has begun. The wolf nodded. The Crown has awakened. What does it want?

The ClaimantRowan’s POV“It's already inside the castle.”Damon's words settled over the nursery.Kael moved in front of me. Everyone out.Helena and the guards immediately backed away. Garrick entered with his sword drawn. What happened? Kael pointed toward the cracked wall. Seal the nursery. Garrick looked at the black crown beneath the stone. His face changed. What is that?Damon answered. A warning. No, I said.Everyone looked at me. I held my son tighter. A warning doesn't speak from inside my walls. The voice came again. Bring me my heir. The candles went out.My son began crying. Kael reached for me. Stay behind me. A shadow moved across the wall. Garrick raised his sword.Show yourself! Nothing happened. Then the nursery door slammed shut.Kael rushed toward it. The door wouldn't open. Rowan! I stepped backward. The black crown on the wall began glowing.Seven stars appeared around it. Then a man's voice whispered from the darkness. The bloodline survived. Damon looked around

Kael stepped forward. You said the true war has begun. The wolf nodded. The Crown has awakened. What does it want? The wolf looked at my son. The child. Kael's hand moved to his sword. It already has a crown. Not the crown you have seen. My forehead creased. How many crowns are there? Two. The wolf turned toward the mountains. One belongs to the First King. And the other? The Blood Crown. Damon stepped forward. Where is it? The wolf looked at him. Where blood was first spilled. Damon frowned. That's not an answer. It is the only answer you are permitted to have.Kael's voice hardened. Enough riddles. The wolf

The Blood FatherRowan’s POV“We're going after him.”Kael's words barely left his mouth before I moved. I’m coming. He caught my arm. No. I’m coming. Rowan, the forest is full of Nightfang warriors. And Damon is alone.Kael's face hardened. You're carrying our son. I know. I held the baby closer. That's why I have to go. Kael looked at me for some seconds. Then he exhaled. Garrick! The door opened immediately. Your Majesty? Prepare the eastern riders.Garrick hesitated. Against the Nightfang army? We aren't attacking them. Kael looked at me. We're retrieving Damon.Garrick's eyebrows rose. Damon? He has surrendered his Alpha claim. Then Ryan will try to kill him. Exactly. Garrick nodded. I'll prepare the horses. Kael took my hand. Stay between me and Garrick. I will. And if I tell you to run—I won't.His mouth twitched. You're impossible. You knew that before you kissed me. He leaned closer. I knew it before I fell in love with you.My heart softened. Then our son made a tiny sound b

Before DawnRowan’s POV“Damon has until dawn.”I read the message again. Then I tore it in half. Kael took the pieces from my hand. They want us frightened. They want my son. They won't get him. I looked at Kael. You don't know that. I know this much. No one takes our child from this castle. Our?The word came out softer than I intended.Kael stepped closer. Our son. He touched my cheek. I don't care what ancient laws say. I don't care what Nightfang believes. He is our family. I leaned into his hand. Then a cry came from the cradle. We both turned. Our son was awake. His tiny hands moved restlessly. I picked him up. I'm here. He quieted almost immediately. Kael smiled. He knows your voice. He knows yours too. As if proving me right, our son reached out to Kael. He took him. The sight still made something warm spread through me.A feared Alpha King holding a tiny baby as though the entire world could break if he held him too tightly. You're safe, Kael whispered. Our son touched his

The Man WaitingRowan’s POVThe wolves followed us all the way back to the castle. Hundreds of them. They didn't attack. They didn't growl. They simply walked through the forest in silence, surrounding Kael, me, and my son. Every few minutes, another wolf appeared between the trees.Kael noticed it too. They're following him. I looked down at my baby. He was asleep against my chest. Peaceful. As if he hadn't just survived a kidnapping, a collapsing temple, and an ancient creature rising from beneath the earth. I kissed his forehead. Let them follow.Kael looked at me. You aren't afraid? I was afraid when he was gone. I held my son closer. Now he's back. Kael reached for my free hand. His fingers locked around mine. I thought I had lost both of you. You didn't. I know. He lifted my hand and kissed my knuckles. I still need to hear it.I smiled. We're here. Kael leaned closer. So am I. For a moment, the war disappeared. There was only us. Our son. And the quiet road home. Then a horn so

Beneath the TempleRowan’s PO“Finally.”The voice came from behind us. My son stopped moving. He simply stared into the darkness. I pulled him against my chest.Kael. I shouted. I have you. Kael's arm locked around my waist. The floor beneath us cracked again. A black hand rose through the broken stone. Garrick shouted.Move! Kael shoved me backward. The hand struck where I had been standing.Stone exploded through the chamber. Damon grabbed Ryan by the collar. What did you awaken? Ryan fought against him.I didn't awaken anything. You brought us here! I was told the temple would choose the child! Damon slammed him against the wall. By who? Ryan's eyes flicked to the darkness. The Chancellor. Damon released him. You idiot. The ground shook harder. Then something climbed from the pit. It wasn't a wolf. It wasn't a man. It looked like both. Its body was covered in black armor-like scales, but its face was almost human. Two silver eyes fixed on my son. Kael stepped in front of me. Stay
