The flashbulbs were a strobe light nightmare. Julian felt like a trapped animal, his pulse frantic beneath the skin of his wrist where Leo’s fingers were clamped tight.

"Smile, Jules," Leo hissed, his face morphing into a mask of tender affection that didn't reach his eyes. "You look like you're heading to your own funeral."

"I am," Julian muttered, baring his teeth in what he hoped passed for a charismatic grin. "You’re holding my hand way too hard."

"That’s called passion. People like passion. If I let go, they’ll think we’re breaking up."

"I hate this. I hate you. I hate that I’m wearing a tuxedo that costs more than my first car to go to an event I’d rather be dead at."

"Think of the paycheck," Leo murmured, pulling Julian closer as they reached the black sedan idling at the curb. "Think of the mortgage. Now, stop trembling. You’re ruining the 'power couple' vibe."

They slid into the backseat. The silence that followed was suffocating, thick with the scent of Leo’s expensive cologne—something like cedarwood and something else, something sharper.

"Don't look at me like that," Leo said, checking his reflection in the privacy window.

"Like what?"

"Like you're planning a murder. Save it for the cameras."

"You’re insufferable."

"And you're a PR disaster waiting to happen. Just follow my lead tonight. When we get to the ballroom, we do the 'longing glance,' we share a glass of champagne, and for the love of God, don't walk ten feet ahead of me."

Julian let out a sharp, ragged breath. "You really have done this fake-dating thing before, haven't you?"

Leo shot him a sharp look. "I’ve done a lot of things to keep my head above water, Julian. You’re just too busy looking down your nose to notice how the world actually works."

The car came to a smooth halt. Outside, the roar of the crowd was a physical weight.

"Ready?" Leo asked, his voice suddenly void of edge. It was the actor’s switch—clinical and detached.

"No."

"Doesn't matter. Smile."

The door opened. They stepped out into the blinding white light of the gala entrance. It was a sea of velvet ropes and screaming voices. Leo didn't hesitate; he draped an arm around Julian’s waist, pulling him flush against his side. The contact was electric, searing through the layers of silk and wool.

"Stop leaning away," Leo whispered into his ear, his hand firm on Julian’s hip.

"It’s awkward."

"It’s romantic. Lean in. Make them believe it."

Julian tilted his head, forcing a soft, lingering gaze at Leo. "You’re enjoying this way too much, Thorne."

"Maybe I am. It’s not every day I get to manhandle the nation's sweetheart."

They made their way down the red carpet, a synchronized performance of brushes, whispers, and coy laughter. Once inside the ballroom, the press swarmed the dance floor.

"They want a dance," Leo said, his eyes scanning the room.

"Absolutely not."

"It’s in the contract, Julian. 'Mandatory public appearances.' This is part of it."

"I am not dancing with you."

"We’re already on the floor. If you walk away now, it looks like a fight. Do you want to be unemployed by midnight?"

Julian sighed, the sound lost in the swell of the orchestra. He placed a hand on Leo’s shoulder, his skin crawling. Leo placed his hand on Julian’s waist, his thumb brushing a slow, deliberate circle against the fabric.

"You’re stiff," Leo whispered, leading him into a slow, rhythmic sway.

"I’m trying not to throw up."

"Try harder. Look at me. Like I’m the only person in the room."

Julian met Leo’s gaze. Up close, Leo’s eyes were unnervingly intense, the dark centers focused entirely on his mouth. "You're a sociopath."

"And you're a terrible actor. Your pulse is visible in your neck."

"Maybe because I'm being touched by someone I loathe."

Leo chuckled, the vibration of his chest echoing through Julian’s own. "Lust and loathing are two sides of the same coin, Jules. Keep it up. They’re eating it up."

The music swelled, and for a moment, the world of the cameras faded, leaving only the heat between them. It was a volatile, dangerous energy that felt far too real.

"Champagne?" a waiter asked, passing by.

Leo reached out, but he bumped into a passing guest. The glass tipped, sending a spray of sparkling wine soaking across Julian’s crisp white dress shirt.

"Damn it!" Julian hissed, pulling back. "You clumsy idiot!"

"Me? You were the one pushing!"

"My shirt is ruined. I have to go."

"We can't go. We’re being watched." Leo grabbed his arm, steering him toward a side corridor. "There's a private lounge near the cloakroom. We’ll fix it."

"I don't want you touching me."

"Then you can walk out there with a stained shirt and look like a mess. Or, you can let me help you and keep the image intact."

They ducked into the quiet, dimly lit room. The music was a muffled heartbeat through the walls. Julian ripped at his cufflinks, his fingers shaking with irritation.

"Here," Leo said, stepping into his personal space. He reached for a linen napkin, his hands moving with an efficiency that Julian found infuriatingly calm.

"I can do it myself," Julian snapped.

"Clearly," Leo retorted, his hand pressing against Julian’s chest as he began dabbing at the fabric.

The room felt suddenly, claustrophobically small. Leo’s face was inches away, his breath warm against Julian’s jaw. He wasn't just cleaning the stain anymore; his hand lingered, his fingers tracing the line of Julian’s collarbone with a familiarity that made Julian’s heart stutter.

"Stop," Julian breathed, though he didn't pull away.

Leo stopped, but he didn't pull back. He looked up, his eyes darkening, dropping from Julian’s eyes to his lips. "The act," Leo whispered, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with something that no longer sounded like a script. "How far does it go, Julian? Because if we’re going to sell this, we’re going to have to sell it right."

He leaned in, his hand moving to the back of Julian’s neck, his thumb tracing a slow, agonizing arc behind his ear. Julian froze, his back hitting the cool wood of the door, his breath hitching in his throat.

"Leo," he started, but the name caught in his throat as Leo pressed closer, their chests colliding, the line between performance and reality blurring into nothing.

The echoes of Halloway’s heels faded into the dark, leaving behind a silence that felt like a held breath. Julian stood frozen, his eyes glued to the spot where she had vanished."She’s literally watching us from the shadows now, isn't she?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling.Leo didn't look toward the exit. He kept his gaze locked on Julian, his jaw tight. "Let her watch. If she wants a show, we’ll give her a grand finale.""Are we actually doing this? Total transparency? That’s not a plan, Leo; that’s professional suicide.""Being her puppets was a slow death, Jules. I’d rather go out in flames than spend another year on her leash.""You’re okay with losing everything? The lead roles, the contracts, the status?"Leo stepped closer, closing the distance until their chests almost touched. "I’ve been 'Leo Thorne' for years. I don’t even know if I like the guy. I’d trade every single trophy on my shelf to wake up one morning without looking over my shoulder."Julian searched his eye

The security guards ushered them into the mahogany-paneled office like two condemned men walking toward the gallows. Julian’s heart was hammering against his ribs, but he caught Leo’s gaze—a flicker of defiance that told him they were far from finished.Halloway tossed the tablet onto her desk and poured herself a drink. "Sit. Both of you. You look like you’re about to pass out.""I’d rather stand," Julian said, his voice cold. "And I’d rather know why you think a board-approved embezzlement scheme makes you untouchable.""It makes me a partner," Halloway said, taking a slow sip. "It makes me necessary. But keep talking. I love watching you two try to grasp the scale of the game you’re playing."Leo pulled out a chair and sat, leaning back with a lazy, dangerous grin. "Necessary? Or just convenient? The board wouldn't be too happy if the public found out their 'Golden Boy' and 'Action Hero' were being used as money laundering conduits."Halloway didn't flinch. "Try to sell that headli

Halloway’s smile wasn't a smile; it was a guillotine. She stood in the mouth of the alley, the blue light of her phone screen casting harsh, sickly shadows over her features."Caught you," she purred, her voice dripping with clinical satisfaction.Julian stepped back, his heel scraping against the wet pavement. "How long have you been standing there?""Long enough to hear the revolutionary manifesto," Halloway said, walking closer. Her heels clicked with rhythmic, terrifying precision. "So. 'Writing your own script'? That’s cute. Did you honestly think you were the first pair of vanity-projects to try and dig into the agency's server?"Leo didn't move. He stood in front of Julian, his shoulders squared. "We weren't digging, Halloway. We were just catching our breath after your little ‘crowd control’ experiment went sideways.""My experiment?" Halloway raised an eyebrow. "You’re the ones who signed the contracts. You’re the ones who made the brand worth millions. If the fans get a litt

"An engagement? Are you out of your mind?" Julian dropped the documents as if they were scorching hot.Halloway didn't blink. "It’s not a request, Julian. It’s a survival tactic. The studio wants a permanent anchor to this story. You sign, or your career is effectively vaporized by tomorrow morning’s news cycle."Leo leaned forward, his voice a low, mocking growl. "She’s not kidding, Jules. Look at the terms. They’re offering a ten-point back-end bonus if we deliver the 'ring' by Sunday.""I don't care about the money! This is insane. We can’t just announce an engagement to a public that thinks we’re an 'it' couple because of a few staged photos.""The public already thinks you’re in love," Halloway cut in, her tone surgical. "The engagement is just the period at the end of the sentence. Now, get out. The premiere for Shadows of Valor is in an hour. Dress the part, act the part, or don’t bother showing up."Julian stared at the closed door of the SUV. "I feel like I’m being groomed fo

"They saw everything," Julian repeated, his voice barely a whisper as he stared at the pixelated image of them on the verge of that kiss. "We’re done. This is the end. Halloway is going to hang us from the rafters."Leo didn't panic. He just swiped the phone screen away and leaned back against the leather seat, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. "Relax, Jules. It’s not a kiss. It’s ‘stolen intimacy.’ The public loves a forbidden moment. If anything, this just made us more expensive.""Expensive? Leo, people are calling us frauds! Look at the comments section. 'Toxic,' 'Calculated,' 'Fake as a three-dollar bill.' We’re trending for all the wrong reasons.""Let them talk. Attention is currency. You want to stay relevant? You ride the wave.""I want to stay employed, not be the laughingstock of Hollywood."The SUV lurched as it hit a pothole, throwing them briefly together. Julian braced his hands against the center console, keeping a rigid distance. "We have that joint interview wit

"What the hell are you doing here?" Julian scrambled backward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The silhouette in the doorway didn't move. It was just a delivery driver, looking confusedly at the illuminated cabin."Uh, groceries? The agency sent them over. Is everything okay in here?" the delivery guy asked, peering past the blinding light."Everything is fine," Leo said, his voice terrifyingly steady. He didn't even glance at Julian. He stepped forward, taking the crate from the man. "Leave it on the porch. We’re busy.""Right. Sorry about the, uh, interruption," the guy muttered, backing away into the night. The door slammed shut. The latch clicked. Julian felt the air leave his lungs. He stared at Leo’s back, his face burning with a heat that had nothing to do with the thermostat."You were going to kiss me," Leo said, his back still turned. It wasn't a question."I was not. I was disoriented. The light—it was a reaction to the sudden brightness."Leo turn
