Sure enough, once Tamsin returned to the pack, Stellan was suddenly busy all over again.

I no longer spent every separation trawling through rumors and pack gossip, trying to predict every place Stellan might appear so I could be waiting when he arrived.

Instead, I let Sabine pull me into a far better life—morning tee times, champagne brunches, and last-minute weekends chasing fresh powder in the mountains.

For the first time in years, my days were not arranged around Stellan’s schedule. Sabine booked the tee times, chose the restaurants, and filled every hour before I could start wondering where he was. I had forgotten how peaceful life could feel when I was no longer waiting for someone.

Before I knew it, only twenty days remained until I left the pack.

One afternoon, Sabine and I were waiting for our food when Stellan and Tamsin unexpectedly walked into the restaurant.

They were laughing together and looked every inch the perfect couple.

“Elowen?”

Stellan’s gaze found me immediately.

Tamsin gave me a sweet smile.

“Elowen, what a coincidence. Are you having lunch here too?”

When he noticed me looking at her, Stellan instinctively stepped forward and shielded her with his body.

He clearly expected me to attack Tamsin the way I had before.

I did nothing of the sort. I even caught Sabine’s arm before she could leap to my defense.

I only smiled.

“Yes. What a coincidence.”

The moment Tamsin sensed that I would not challenge her, her smile sharpened.

“I’m sorry, Elowen, but Stellan promised to reserve the entire restaurant so we could dine alone. I’m afraid you’ll have to go somewhere else.”

She turned to Stellan with a coy tilt of her head.

“Tell her, Stellan. Otherwise, Elowen will think I’m trying to humiliate her on purpose.”

Stellan hesitated when he met my calm gaze. In the end, he nodded.

He said nothing, yet that single nod managed to say far too much.

Sabine was already pushing up her sleeves when I placed a hand on her arm.

“It’s fine. We can go somewhere else.”

Somewhere else. Somewhere Stellan was not.

With my departure so close, I refused to waste another minute arguing with an ex who no longer mattered.

The best thing I could do as an ex was treat him as though he no longer existed.

The restaurant manager read the room and hurried over to flatter Stellan and Tamsin.

“You two make such a beautiful couple. Anyone would envy a love like yours.”

At that, Stellan looked at me with a complicated expression. He seemed half prepared for me to make a scene and half curious to hear what I might say.

I acted as though I had heard nothing, took Sabine’s hand, and walked out.

Stellan had not expected me to remain so indifferent. He stared after me, distracted, as I disappeared from view.

Tamsin called his name again and again. By the end, impatience had crept into her voice. Only then did he reluctantly look away.
