The moment Elina Griffin saw me clutching my mother's memorial portrait, she snatched it out of my hands. I lunged after it, but she was wearing heels. She simply lifted it higher than I could reach.

She looked the portrait up and down with a smirk. "Your old lady wasn't bad-looking. Too bad she had rotten luck and gave birth to someone like you."

She clicked her tongue. "You've been mooching off Talon for years, living in his house, eating his food, acting like you're the lady of the house. I've met shameless people before. But you're in a league of your own."

I reached for the frame again.

This time, she jerked it away.

The corner of the frame slammed against the edge of the trash can with a sharp crack. A jagged fracture spread across the glass.

"Didn't you hear me? Or are you deaf?"

I clenched my fists so tightly my nails dug into my palms. Rage surged from my chest and lodged in my throat, burning behind my eyes.

My hand shot up before I could stop myself.

She reacted instantly.

Taking a quick step back, she transformed in the blink of an eye. Her eyes welled up with tears, and her lips trembled.

When she spoke again, her voice was soft and pitiful.

"P-Please don't hit me... I was only trying to help clean up the house. If I upset you, I'll apologize. Isn't that enough?"

I froze. My hand hung suspended in midair.

Then I noticed her glance toward the front door. Only then did I realize it was still open.

A door opened somewhere down the hallway. One of the neighbors was coming out.

Grinding my teeth, I lowered my hand and pulled out my phone and called Talon.

Ring...

Ring...

Ring...

No answer.

I called again.

Still nothing.

Elina leaned against the doorframe, watching me.

The instant the neighbor disappeared back inside, every trace of hurt vanished from her face. Her sneer returned.

"What? Calling Talon to tattle on me?"

She stepped closer.

"Who do you think you are? You've been freeloading in somebody else's house for years, and you've actually started believing you belong here? Talon's been keeping you around like a stray dog, and now you think you're the lady of the house?

"I'm throwing everything in there away today. If you know what's good for you, leave on your own before I have security drag you out."

I stared at her. The anger in my throat sank into the pit of my stomach, twisting into a hard knot. I turned the cracked frame over, carefully slipped it inside my jacket, and zipped the pocket shut.

I didn't call Talon again. Instead, I looked her in the eye. "I paid for half this house."

She blinked, then burst out laughing. "You? Paid for it?"

She looked me over from head to toe with open contempt. "You dropped out of school. Where exactly would someone like you get that kind of money? Saving up what you mooched off the men you hang around with?"

I didn't answer.

My mother, Greta Ranford, had left me the money before she died. My name was on the deed in black and white.

Elina didn't need to know any of that, but she wasn't throwing me out, either.

I brushed the dust from my jacket, picked up my bedsheet from beside the trash can, and flung it into her face.

"Wash it. Then give it back."

She looked ready to explode, but forced herself to keep smiling. "The sheets I bought are pure silk. The whole set cost over $8,000. I bet you've never slept on anything that expensive in your life."

Her smile turned mocking. "As for this piece of junk? I'd rather donate it to the janitors than waste my time washing it for you."

Then she deliberately ground the heel of her shoe into my bedsheet several times.

When I still didn't respond, she must have assumed I'd finally been intimidated. Her tone relaxed.

"Tell me something. Do any of those brothers actually care about you? They're all going to get married and have families someday. Don't tell me you thought you could live in Talon's house forever."

Elina leaned close enough for only me to hear. "I heard you already ruined the relationships of Talon's other brothers. But your luck just ran out. I'm not one of those pushovers you scared away before."

She had no idea why those four women had really left.

One had tried to scam her way into marriage. One had stolen the family's safe key. One had manipulated my brother into putting a house in her name. Another had called him nothing more than an ATM behind his back.

I hadn't destroyed good relationships. I'd gotten rid of disasters waiting to happen.

I was done wasting words on her. Annoyed, I shoved her toward the doorway.

"What? Jealous?" I said flatly.

Instead of backing off, she grabbed my shoulder and shoved me hard.

Talon stared at the screenshot, his eyes narrowing.A moment later, he got to his feet and walked over to the window. His back was to us, his shoulders drawn tight."I'm sorry."Mason walked over and gave him a light smack on the back of the head, just like he used to when they were kids."That's enough. Renee's okay. That's what matters. Now we settle every score—and we sue everyone who needs suing."Silence settled over the study. Then the door opened. I looked up to see an older man standing in the doorway. His hair was streaked with gray, his back still perfectly straight. He wore a gray cashmere cardigan and leaned lightly on an ebony cane.Elvis Parker. My father.Everyone in the room stood."Dad."He walked inside, his gaze sweeping over the room before stopping on me. His eyes dropped to the ice pack resting on the back of my hand."Does it still hurt?""Not anymore."He nodded, some of the tension leaving his face. "Renee, you told Landon you're ready to go publi

Talon looked her straight in the eye and said clearly, "Exactly because she's my sister, I finally see you for who you really are."He shook off her grip and drove his fist into the wall. Whether it was anger, guilt, or both, he needed something to hit.Afraid he'd lose control, Cole stepped in and led him outside to cool off.Elina could only watch helplessly as Talon walked away.I glanced down at the mess still scattered across the floor. The compact was shattered. The lipstick had snapped clean in half. The cushion foundation lay upside down, leaking across the tile.I picked up the broken compact and held it out in front of Elina."Pay for it."Her face twisted. "I... I don't have any money.""No money?"I flicked the broken pieces of the compact into her face. Powder scattered through her hair and across her clothes. She yelped and stumbled backward."Really? When you texted your sugar daddy asking for money, you didn't seem broke."Her expression froze. It was obviou

The classroom fell silent. The people who'd been jeering only moments ago couldn't say a word.I heard several sharp gasps."Wait... did I hear that right?"Elina instantly lifted her foot off my hand. The color drained from her face. Her smile disappeared, replaced by naked panic. She froze when she saw Talon standing there. His expression was grim, and she had no idea how much he'd heard."T-Talon... what are you doing here?"He didn't even look at her.Landon crossed the room and helped me to my feet. His eyes dropped to the angry red mark across the back of my hand, where a stiletto heel had crushed it. The bruising had already started to show.I winced, and his expression tightened with worry.I forced a small smile. "I'm okay."He turned to face the entire class. "My name is Landon Parker. I'm the eldest son of the Parker family."Renee is our little sister. By blood. We were separated years ago and only found her again recently. She chose not to make it public because

Something inside me snapped. I fixed my eyes on Leo and forced out each word through gritted teeth."What did you just say about my mom?"He shrugged. "If your mom had been any kind of decent woman, she would've been able to keep a man around. I'm just telling the truth. Why are you so worked up?""Say it again."My voice was quiet and tense, like a wire stretched to its breaking point."Your mother was that kind of woman back then. Why would you be any different? You spend every day hanging around a bunch of men, chasing off their girlfriends, then pretending you're above it all."The lecture hall fell silent. I could feel dozens of hostile eyes studying me from every direction. My fists clenched, and my gaze drifted to the security camera mounted in the corner of the classroom.I was fighting for the university's highest academic scholarship. I couldn't afford to lose control.Elina put on her sympathetic expression again. "Come on, don't say that about her. Maybe she's had

I stumbled back a step and shoved Elina away.I wasn't trying to hurt her, but her heels slipped across the hardwood floor. She staggered backward, then dropped straight onto her butt. The next second, she let out a shrill scream. "You hit me? Fine! You're dead!"The noise made my head pound.I grabbed my laptop bag and walked out. If I wanted her gone, I'd need proof. As for why I hadn't told her who I really was, it was because I still hadn't officially become part of the Parker family.Back then, my mom had misunderstood my father, Elvis Parker, while she was pregnant with me and left before he ever knew the truth. It wasn't until after she passed away that the Parkers finally found me. I'd asked them not to tell anyone I existed. That night, I sat alone on the couch in my hotel room, scrolling through my phone until dawn.Elina's social media was spotless. Every photo was perfectly curated—afternoon tea, flower arranging, indie bookstores. She looked like the picture of gr
