Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
The bidding conference of the Sky Center project was full of people.

I sat at an inconspicuous corner and watched as the representative of Sun Design Co. walked onto the stage.

It was none other than Samuel.

He had put on a slim-fit professional suit with leather shoes that day. His hair was neatly done. His naive and innocent demeanor had been replaced by the confidence of a seasoned professional.

He took a deep breath and started describing the concept of his design.

“My design is inspired by the Eyes of the City. We don’t want it to be a cold building, but something that can breathe with this city. We hope it can be a living thing that witnesses the city’s development…”

Those were the exact words I once told Linda. Night after night, I made coffee and burned the midnight oil as I told her those very things.

I once thought that trust was the unspoken bond between our souls as a married couple.

Finally, I learned that I was only playing a part, and Linda had been the most patient thief.

What was more ironic was that Linda was sitting with the judges as a specially invited VIP.

Her long hair was tied up, and she had put on exquisite makeup. She looked like the professional elite that I was most familiar with.

She listened to Samuel attentively. She nodded from time to time. When she looked at Samuel, her eyes shone in a way I had never seen. She regarded Samuel as her treasure, and she was eager to show him off to the world.

She ignored me. I was sitting in a corner below the stage. She made it seem like I was just an irrelevant backdrop.

My phone vibrated briefly in my palm. It was a text from Alex.

[Do you need me there with some weapons?]

I looked at the screen and smiled a little despite my tightly pursed lips. I texted him back.

[Wait.]

Samuel’s speech reached its climax as he stood on the stage. The final image of his presentation was the one stolen from my computer.

The audience exclaimed softly.

When Samuel ended his speech, he received a roar of applause.

The host walked to the stage. “Thank you for your brilliant presentation, Mr. Wilson. Let’s ask our specially invited judge, Ms. Clark, for some comments on this proposal. She’s the most experienced senior in the field and comes from Dream Co.”

Linda accepted the microphone. She cleared her throat before she looked at Samuel and spoke up.

“To be honest, I’m very surprised. Mr. Wilson’s design perfectly balances aesthetic values with practicality. Plus, he made some adjustments to the few load-bearing structures. It’s very bold, and he’s full of talent.”

She claimed that Samuel was talented. At the same time, she used that to hurt me.

After a pause, she scanned the audience.

“I must admit that this design is undoubtedly the best today.”

The audience clapped enthusiastically.

I could hear nothing but loud silence besides the beating of my own heart.

The host smiled and chimed in, “Thank you for your high praise, Ms. Clark! It looks like Sun Design Co. might surely get this project! Is there any other guest or judge who would like to ask Mr. Wilson any questions?”

There was only silence.

After Linda, the expert, spoke so clearly, there was nothing more to say.

Samuel bowed on the stage and could not hide his smug happiness.

I pocketed my phone and stood up when everyone was about to clap again. I did not make any sudden movements, but I attracted everyone’s attention.

The host was stunned. “Sir, may I know who you are?”

Linda’s smile froze on her face.

I did not go on the day of the verdict. Alex excitedly gave me a live broadcast through his phone.“Their crimes were combined, and they were severely punished! Did you hear that, Charles? Punished very severely!” Alex was happy.“Linda collapsed on the spot and was dragged out of the court. Samuel did not fare any better. He kept crying and yelling that he was forced into it. Unfortunately, he gave you the recording, and it was the one thing that pinned him to his crime. The judge told him that adults should pay a price for their greed and stupidity.”I spoke briefly and hung up. The sun was shining brightly outside the window. I was watering the plants on the balcony and cut off a few withered leaves. Everything was finally over.Half a month later, I retrieved most of my money and property that were transferred from the company and rebuilt it.On the day of the meeting, the room was full of people. There were some experienced workers and some new people whom I had recently recr

A tense atmosphere filled the court.Linda and Samuel were separated and placed in the dock. They were once lovers, but they looked at each other as if they were each other’s sworn enemies. As expected, a good show was about to begin. Linda’s lawyer spoke up first. She cleared her throat and said, “My client, Ms. Linda Clark, is a kind and exceptionally capable woman. But she got blinded by her so-called lover and made a mistake.” I almost burst into laughter. After that, Samuel’s lawyer stepped forward with even more excellent acting. She made Samuel seem like a fresh graduate who was ignorant. An experienced senior had used her power and sweet words to lie to him. When she reached the emotional part, Samuel covered his face and sobbed. His shoulders even twitched a little.I could hear some pitiful sighs from the observers. Alex was sitting beside me. He gritted his teeth and whispered something that only I could hear, “What a good actor!”I kept quiet and calmed him do

It was clear that everyone would kick a person when they were down.Linda was left with nothing. She must have borrowed someone’s phone in jail because she kept calling me.When I answered the phone, I heard her piteous cries. She spoke to me in a way I was very familiar with.“Charles, I was wrong. I accept my mistakes. Can you give me another chance? I went astray and did something bad. That guy seduced me first. He bewitched me! I just lost my way!”She kept crying and shifting the blame. In the end, she recounted the past. “Did you forget about the time when we first established Dream Co.? We stayed up late to make designs together. We ate cheap food together. You told me that it was our shared dream…”I listened to her terrible acting and found it irritating.“Are you done?” I interrupted her. “I’ll hang up if you’re done. It’s expensive to make an international call.”Linda abruptly stopped talking and burst into tears. I hung up and blocked the number.I did not enj

I opened the door to the meeting room of Dream Co. The room was full of people. All the shareholders were present. Linda was sitting in the main seat. When she saw me, she immediately acted like she cared about me.“Here you are, Charles! Are you feeling better? Everyone is very worried about you.” She got to her feet like she wanted to support me. Well, she did put on a great show. “Take a seat! Let’s talk.”A few shareholders who were close to her echoed her words. “Yeah, Mr. Simpson. Please calm down. You need to take care of yourself.”“Ms. Clark is doing what’s best for the company. You should calm down.”They echoed each other’s words and made it seem like I was a maniac who needed to be comforted. I ignored Linda’s extended hand and walked straight to the other end of the conference table. Then, I inserted my USB flash drive into the computer. “I asked everyone to come here today not to discuss the problems with my emotions but to get rid of the black sheep of our com

I ignored the hypocritical texts in the shareholders’ group as they took Linda’s side. I switched my phone to silent mode. Those disruptions were none of my concern.I drove to Alex’s law firm. He was already waiting for me with his laptop. At the sight of my car, he opened the car door and got in. “Don’t go home or to the company.” Alex placed his laptop on his thighs and typed on it. “I guess that woman is searching for you everywhere. Let’s find a place to dig up all the dirt on her.”He kept speaking furiously, but he did not stop what he was doing. We went to a private room in a secluded cafe. I watched him gain access to various databases, type in a few codes, and wait for the data to roll onto the screen. Then, he saw the registration information of a company. “Sun Design Co.,” Alex said and sneered. “The legal representative is someone called Gavin Wilson, but I can’t find anything about this person. Even his ID is fake. But the company’s foreign trust account looks

The bidding conference ended in a more chaotic way than I had imagined. The organizer struggled to keep things in order. Then, the meeting ended early because of the sudden turn of events.Linda protected Samuel and they left together with the security guards’ help. When she walked past me, she stopped. Her face, which I was very familiar with, was overcome with nothing but resentment. “I’ve got to hand it to you, Charles.” She gritted her teeth and said, “You’ll regret it.”I kept quiet and watched her.She claimed that I would regret it. She had not even allowed me the privilege of the truth when she gifted another man with my hard work. I was back in my car. I had yet to start the car when Alex called me. I could hear him typing on his keyboard in the background.“Congratulations, Charles! You’re now trending!” I could not tell if he was teasing me or was being serious. “The title’s rather strange. They call you a crazy man who made a scene in a bidding conference.” I fr
