Chapter 3

Author: Oldcat
That night, the fire burned across most of the hillside.

My door was locked and I couldn't get out. In the thick smoke, a burning beam crashed down on me, and I passed out.

When I woke up, it was already daylight.

Almost without thinking, I reached for my belly.

Heath was sitting by the bed, his eyes red and swollen. When he saw that, he quickly reassured me. "Don't worry, Luna. The baby's fine.

"The healer says you're badly hurt and need to rest." He paused, then added quietly, "If the Alpha hadn't locked you in your room, you wouldn't have been hurt this badly. How could he lock you up like that..."

I opened my mouth, and my voice came out hoarse. "Where is he?"

Before he could answer, a low, heavy rumble came from outside. More than a hundred wolves were growling under their breath.

I frowned, but I got up and went out.

Gideon and Phoebe were both standing in the great hall. His face was grim. She looked pitiful.

"What's going on out there?"

A young warrior nearby glanced at Gideon and hesitated before speaking. "Luna... last night, the wildfire spread from the villa all the way to the Moon Goddess's temple and destroyed more than 2,000 prayer candles inside.

"People are saying the fire started in Phoebe's room...

"Now they're blocking the door, demanding the Alpha hand Phoebe over so she can ask the Moon Goddess for forgiveness."

Gideon turned and saw me. His eyes landed on the bandages around my right shoulder, and he frowned. "Is it any better?"

"It's fine," I said. My gaze slid past him to the figure at his back, head bowed, wiping away tears.

Phoebe's eyes were red. She was hiding behind Gideon, too scared to speak.

I looked away and asked calmly, "So how does the Alpha plan to handle this?"

Gideon was silent for a moment.

"I'll rebuild the temple and pay for all of it, and I'll donate another million to the Moon Goddess." He paused. "But the pack is worked up right now. Someone needs to step forward and calm them down."

Gideon looked at me, his tone softening. "Evelyn, could you go out there in her place and apologize? It's only a formality."

I thought I'd heard him wrong.

First I'd spent three months trapped by a landslide. Then last night's fire had left me with an injured shoulder.

And now he wanted his pregnant wife to take the blame for Phoebe?

I scoffed, straightened my back, and looked up at him. "And what if I refuse? Is the Alpha going to tie me up and drag me out there?"

Gideon seemed caught off guard. His brow furrowed instinctively.

"Evelyn, it's just an apology. Nobody's asking you to take the blame for anything. Phoebe's still young. She can't handle something like this, so her family has to step in." He pressed his lips together. "We're family, right?"

He took my hand and gently squeezed my fingers, the way he always used to when he wanted to coax a kiss out of me.

But this time, it did nothing for me.

"I refuse." I pulled my hand free.

Gideon went still.

"Evelyn?" he repeated, as though he hadn't heard what I'd said.

"I said I refuse." I stared at him coldly. "I refuse to let you keep sacrificing me for Phoebe. I refuse to take the blame for her.

"Why does a wolf old enough to shift need someone else to take responsibility for her?"

Gideon just stared at me.

Beside him, Phoebe's voice trembled, thick with tears. "I didn't mean to. I just forgot to put out the fire in the hearth. I didn't know it would set something alight..."

She clung to Gideon's arm, sobbing. "Gideon, help me. Don't hand me over..."

Before she could finish, there was a commotion outside.

"The priest is here—"

"It's Priest Silas!"

The noisy pack went quiet at once.

Gideon turned toward the door and stared at it for a beat. "Open it," he ordered.

Outside, Silas made his way through the crowd. He swept his gaze over everyone present, then spoke. "No one caused the temple fire. Stop spreading rumors."

The wolves exchanged looks. Then a young male wolf worked up the nerve to speak.

"Priest Silas, the temple was fine. How could it suddenly catch fire?

"There hasn't been a wildfire here in years. If nobody set it, what else could it be?

"I say Phoebe did it!"

Silas's expression didn't change. His gaze passed briefly over Phoebe as she wiped away her tears. "Someone burdened by sin has angered the Moon Goddess," he said evenly. "She sent this wildfire as punishment."

At his words, a wave of muffled growls rippled through the pack.

My heart lurched, and I looked up at Silas before I could stop myself.

Gideon stepped in front of Phoebe and asked in a low voice, "Who?"

Silas's gaze finally moved.

Those slate-gray eyes were as cold as frost-covered stone.

He slowly turned, scanning the crowd before his gaze settled on me.

"Her. Blackthorn's Luna, Gideon Ward's wife—Evelyn."

  • The Stolen Luna   Chapter 10

After the baby was born, I headed north with Dane, my child in my arms.He introduced me to buyers at several high-end department stores and put me in touch with a senior official on the committee in charge of gifts for visiting dignitaries. My perfume business grew from a tiny shop in Tidehaven into a brand whose name appeared on signs across three city blocks. With its light, elegant, long-lasting scent, one of my perfumes was chosen as an official gift for visiting dignitaries and received royal approval.I was no longer a she-wolf who had to cling to someone to survive.I had my own brand, my own team, and my own bookkeeper.I sent money to my parents every month.Letters took much longer to reach Mistbrook Valley. A trusted pack member had to carry every message by hand. It took two full months to get a reply. My father said everything at home was fine. My mother told me to take care of myself. She also mentioned that Phoebe had miscarried after Silas forced a bowl of wolfsbane br

It was Heath. He stood in the snow in a black overcoat, his head down.I smiled and went out to meet him."You came!"At the sound of my voice, Heath turned around and forced an awkward smile."Hi."I brought him inside and poured him a cup of coffee before I asked why he'd come."I came to bring the Alpha back," he said, frowning. "He's been away from the pack too long."Things back home are really unsettled right now."He emphasized the word "really" so I'd understand how bad it was.I tapped my knuckles on the table. "What happens in Mistbrook Valley isn't my concern anymore. And Gideon isn't staying with me. He just stops by now and then."I took out one of the cards and held it out to him. "You lent me this back then. I've always been grateful."Heath waved his hands frantically, like a panicked kid."No, Evelyn, I'm not here for the money!"I just... wanted to see how you're doing."And also..."He hesitated and glanced at my face before he went on. "Gideon's health is failing...

After seven days at sea, the boat finally docked at Tidehaven. When I got off, my legs were still a little wobbly. A week of rough seas had scrambled my sense of balance. But here, nobody would ever call me "Luna" again.Tidehaven was a neutral city. It didn't belong to any pack. There were no Alphas here, no Elder Council, no one who could drag me back with a single word about the Moon Goddess's decree. That was why I'd picked it.Being far away was just a bonus.I used the cards Heath had given me to withdraw cash and got a job at a perfume shop. With a werewolf's sharp sense of smell, I learned to identify scents and blend them.Humans had to lean in close and sniff over and over. I only had to twitch my nose to know whether a bag of pepper had gotten damp, or whether a jar of cloves had been mixed with stale stock.I'd never been so proud of anything in my life, and I was walking on air.Soon, I created my first perfume. I called it Oblivion. But day after day I sat in the shop wit

They were still at the door when they heard Phoebe say with a smile in her voice, "Good thing we're already bonded. Otherwise once my body started changing, I'd never be able to hide it from Silas."She sounded cheerful."Well, I didn't expect it either. It was just one night of fun with a rogue. Who knew I'd end up pregnant?"She sighed, then laughed again."And wolfsbane would be far too hard on my body. I'm not putting myself through that."Silas looked livid. His face had gone dark, and fury churned in his slate-gray eyes. The Omega inside continued, "The priest dotes on you. Why did you insist that he send the Luna on the penance walk?"Gideon's head snapped around to Silas. He'd had no idea that sending Evelyn on the penance walk had been Phoebe's idea.Silas avoided his eyes and pressed his lips into a thin line.Phoebe gave a soft laugh and said casually, "I may not be able to marry Gideon, but ever since we were kids, he's treated me like I'm the most precious thing in the wor

  • The Stolen Luna   Chapter 6

Gideon reached for her through the mind-link, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't sense where she was.Too far...Gideon took a deep breath, forced down the panic rising in his chest, and sent for Heath. Before long, Heath arrived, stopped before him with his hands at his sides, and bowed.Gideon stared hard at him. "Where did the Luna go?"Heath's voice was calm. "I don't know.""You don't know?" Gideon's voice rose, his anger about to boil over. "You're Blackthorn's Beta. You control who comes and goes in this pack! You stayed by her side all day during the penance walk, so how can you not know?"Heath was quiet for a moment before he slowly raised his head. His eyes were a little red, but his voice stayed steady. "I don't know. She only asked me to give the Alpha a message."Gideon's heart lurched. He had a bad feeling about this.Heath spoke slowly and clearly. "The bond record was never sealed, so the marriage was never valid."Whatever was between her and the Alpha ends

  • The Stolen Luna   Chapter 5

Gideon watched Evelyn being taken back to her bedroom and waited until the door was locked again before he turned to leave.Silas was already waiting outside his study."How is she?""She's okay." Gideon's voice was thick. "An apology would've been enough. Why did it have to be the penance walk? She was already hurt..."A derisive laugh from Gideon's wolf cut him off. You didn't protect Evelyn back there. Why act like you care now?The wolf's words hit him in the gut and stopped him cold.Every time he thought about Heath standing in front of Evelyn, he couldn't shake the guilt. It should have been him standing in front of her."Evelyn and I grew up together. I know what she's like," Silas said, as flat as ever. "She'd rather break her own fangs than bow her head. She was never going to agree to apologize on Phoebe's behalf."He paused and lowered his voice. "Besides, tonight's the full moon, when Phoebe hangs her lantern. If the penance walk hadn't kept her busy, she might have come a
