Chapter 2

Author: Double Fish
After the weekend, Yara went to the office on Monday as usual.

She took care of her work and went to inform Marcus that a meeting was about to start.

When she reached his office, she saw Quiana through the slightly open door.

Quiana was sitting in Marcus’s lap and feeding him a cookie she had eaten half of.

The normally germophobic man smiled as he took a bite. He kissed her fingers gently and said in a soft voice, “You said yesterday you wanted to try this place’s desserts. I waited in line for three hours this morning to get them. How is it?”

“They taste great, just like before. They’re just as sweet, but not too rich. You used to run all over town to get these for me. Now that you’re the CEO of the company, why do you still do it yourself? You could have a secretary handle it.”

Marcus rubbed her ankle lightly. His eyes were full of affection. “When it comes to you, I want to do everything myself. I don’t want anyone else involved.”

Quiana smiled happily. She hugged him and kissed him.

He held her in return and deepened the kiss. He was completely absorbed.

Yara felt her breath catch. A sharp ache spread through her chest.

She clenched her hands tightly. Her knuckles turned white, and her palms burned.

Time passed slowly. The meeting was about to start.

Yara calmed herself and knocked on the door.

“Mr. Quinn, the meeting is about to start.”

Marcus paused when he heard her voice. He was about to stand up, but Quiana pulled him back.

“I don’t want you to leave. Stay with me a little longer.”

Seeing her act so sweetly, Marcus’s heart melted.

“Postpone the meeting for two hours.”

This meeting involved a project with several of Jadewood’s largest corporations. It was crucial for the company’s future.

Yara knew how important it was, so she reminded him.

“The CEOs from Lane Corp, Gaber Corp, and Smith Corp are already waiting in the conference room.”

“Oh, Marcus, your secretary is so annoying. She really has no sense!”

Hearing Quiana complain, Marcus’s face turned cold.

“I said postpone it for two hours! Nothing is more important than Quiana!”

Yara felt a heavy weight in her chest, and she struggled to breathe.

In the end, she closed the door and turned away.

Everyone in their circle knew Marcus was a workaholic.

No matter how busy his personal life was, even after surgery, he always finished his work.

It was the first time he had risked offending business partners just to indulge a little coaxing and postpone such an important meeting.

Did he really like Quiana that much?

Yara lowered her sad eyes and forced herself to calm down. She walked into the conference room to apologize to the board.

The Quinn family was powerful. The CEOs had complaints but dared not confront Marcus. They took out their anger on her instead.

She did not argue. She kept her head down and endured the scolding.

Two hours later, Marcus finally arrived.

Yara dragged her sore, numb legs out of the conference room. Quiana stopped her.

“So, you’re Yara Summers? Marcus says you make great coffee. Everyone in the office looks tired. Go make a cup for each of them. Mine with ice, no sugar.”

Yara knew Quiana was only giving orders because Marcus indulged her. She did not dare turn down her request. She went to the break room.

It took her two hours to make over four hundred cups of coffee. She carried them out one by one.

Quiana barely took a sip before her expression changed. She lifted her cup and smashed it at Yara.

The hard mug hit Yara’s forehead and cut a deep gash.

She groaned softly, and her face scrunched up in pain. She held her wound and fell to the floor.

Quiana was not finished. She grabbed more cups and threw them at Yara over and over.

Yara’s body was covered in bruises. Broken ceramic cut her in many places.

Brown coffee soaked her completely and mixed with her blood as it dripped onto the floor.

It hurt her, but she could only curl up to protect her head and chest.

The office was silent. No one dared step forward. Everyone stayed far away and watched Quiana throw her tantrum.

The noise soon drew Marcus out.

He saw the messy scene and Yara lying on the floor, battered and bleeding. His brow tightened.

“What happened?”

Seeing him, Quiana immediately put on a pitiful expression. “Marcus, I asked your secretary to make me a coffee. I was not feeling well, and she put ice in it. My stomach hurts so much.”

Marcus’s face darkened as he looked at her teary eyes.

“You’ve worked with me for four years and can’t even do this right? Or are you deliberately making things difficult for Quiana because you don’t like her?”

Yara lifted her pale, battered face. She wanted to explain herself, but he did not give her a chance. He called his assistant.

“Yara has broken company rules. Deduct this month’s salary and quarterly bonus. Announce it to the entire company. She will be reviewed at next week’s meeting.”

After saying that, Marcus took off his coat, picked up Quiana, and left.

A year later, Yelena got a text from Yara. Yara was getting married and had invited her to be a bridesmaid. Yelena was thrilled. She dropped everything and immediately bought a ticket to fly out.Marcus, of course, heard the news from Yelena. His hand paused for a moment before he lowered his eyes and asked casually, pretending not to care.“Getting married already?”Over the past year, he had often heard about Yara’s life from Yelena. He knew she had a boyfriend who loved her. He never expected her to get married. He could not quite put his feelings into words. His vision blurred, and the letters on the page seemed difficult to read. From Yelena’s phone came a soft, gentle voice.“Yeah, it’s about time. I finally found the right person, and I don’t want to wait any longer.”It was Yara. Her voice was calm, but there was a hint of a smile. Just hearing her, you could tell she was happy.Yelena packed her things while talking on the phone.“Really? Are you planning to settle

Quiana had been through a terrible time. She barely ate and barely slept. Everything she had done to Yara had come back to punish her a hundred times over. She trembled in the basement. When the main door opened and light spilled inside, she did not immediately understand what was happening. When Marcus stepped in, she snapped fully awake. She scrambled toward him like he was her only lifeline and clung to him.“Marcus, I was wrong! Please forgive me! I’ll never bother you or Yara again. I’ll stay far away from now on. I’ll never get in your way. Please let me go. I truly know I was wrong!”Quiana begged and cried uncontrollably. She looked completely pitiful.Marcus said nothing. He studied her face carefully. All her innocence and beauty were gone. What remained was nothing but endless desire and greed. How could he have lost the most important person in his life over someone like her?The thought filled him with rage. He wanted to punish her in the worst way. But Yelena and Yar

It was not long before Yelena arrived. As soon as she got Yara’s call, she rushed over. The two of them had not seen each other for a month. The moment Yelena arrived, she threw herself into Yara’s arms.“Yara!”Yara’s expression softened as she caught her.“Yelena, you’re here.”They sat together and talked for a few minutes. When it was time to say goodbye, Yelena could not help feeling guilty.“I’m sorry, Yara. I shouldn’t have let my brother come after you. I’ve caused you so much trouble.”Yara squeezed her cheek gently.“It’s okay. Even if you hadn’t said anything, Marcus would have thought of a way himself. Sometimes it’s better to get the pain over with quickly. It was good that we got everything out of the way this time.”Still, Yelena felt bad. She had not expected Marcus to go so far. He had spent the whole night in the rain as if he did not care about himself. She looked toward Marcus, who was not far away, quietly watching them. She could not help asking the questi

Marcus sat in the coffee shop until it closed. Only then did he finally get up and leave. He did not know what to do. His chest felt tight with pain. The more it hurt, the more clearly he realized how important Yara was to him. He had lost her just like that.If only Quiana had never come back.If only he had realized sooner that he had fallen in love with Yara.If only he had not disappointed her.One possibility after another flashed through his mind, but there was no turning back.He wandered through the unfamiliar streets of a foreign city. Thunder split the sky, and heavy rain began to fall. People on the street ran for shelter and hurried home to escape the storm, but Marcus had nowhere to go.He walked in the rain and repeated Yara’s name under his breath. Before long, he was completely soaked. His phone suddenly rang. He picked it up with a flicker of hope. It was a message from Yelena.[Marcus, come back.]He stared at the words and felt drained. They had agreed to meet at a coffee shop. When Marcus pushed the door open, the bell above it chimed. He stepped inside and immediately saw Yara sitting in the corner. They had only been apart for a month, but it had felt like a year of agony. Seeing her again felt slightly unreal. She had changed a lot.Whenever she was with him, she had always dressed like a secretary because that was her role. Even after work, even when they tried different things at home, she had always seemed prim and proper to him.On that day, she wore casual clothes. Her hair was tied up, showing her slender, pale neck. For a moment, he felt as if he had gone back to the beginning, to the shy Yara who once had a quiet crush on him.He stood there for a few seconds before walking over with a smile.“Yara. It’s been a while.”He held back the urge to pull her into his arms. He looked at her face with open longing and fascination.“Let’s keep this short. I only agreed to meet because I want to make things

Yelena sent a message to Yara, but there was a time difference of several hours overseas. She told Marcus to go home first. She said she would let him know as soon as she heard back, but he refused to leave. He insisted on staying at Yelena’s place. He slept on the couch and woke at the slightest sound. Each time, he hoped it was a message from Yara. The next evening, Yelena finally received a reply.[Alright. I’ll meet him.]The message was short, but it gave Marcus hope. Yara was willing to see him. That meant there was still a chance for them.Excited, Marcus immediately booked the earliest flight available.Yelena grabbed his arm and frowned.“Marcus, rest for a day before you go. You haven’t slept properly in days, have you? Since Yara has agreed to see you, she won’t break her word.”Marcus pulled his arm away.“I can’t wait any longer. Ever since Yara left, I have been thinking about her every day. I just want to see her.”The tenderness in his eyes left Yelena deeply
