Chapter 3

Author: Double Fish
Yara watched him walk away until he disappeared from sight. The tears she had held back for so long finally fell.

She forced herself to stand. She ignored the pain, went to get a broom and a mop, and started cleaning the broken cups and spilled coffee on the floor.

A few kind coworkers came over to help. Their eyes were full of sympathy when they looked at her.

“I clearly heard her say iced, no sugar. How can she turn it around like that? Yara, did you do something to upset her?”

“Does she even need a reason? I’ve heard so many people say she’s arrogant and bossy. The moment she’s in a bad mood, she takes it out on someone. Lots of people in our circle can’t stand her. But Mr. Quinn spoils her, so no one dares to offend her.”

“Sigh. I’ve never seen Mr. Quinn care about anyone this much. Yara, you should be more careful from now on. We’re just ordinary people. We can’t compare to someone like her. She’s a rich heiress, and she has Mr. Quinn’s backing. Even if we’re being treated unfairly, we’re the ones who have to swallow it.”

Yara knew they meant well.

But their words stirred up too many emotions inside her. She could not say a single word.

In the past, there had been an issue with a contract she handled. It was clearly the client’s mistake, but they shifted the blame onto her.

When they accused her and put her under pressure, Marcus firmly took her side. He argued with them and cleared her name.

Quiana had dropped a casual lie, and he did not check the facts. He did not give Yara a chance to explain. He placed all the blame on her.

Yara had always worked hard and handled countless problems for him. In the end, did he have so little trust in her?

Or did right and wrong simply not matter to him? Did he only care about keeping Quiana happy?

The thought made her chest tighten with pain. The bitterness was hard to bear.

It took her a long time to finish cleaning up. After that, she dragged her exhausted body home.

She had just finished washing up when Marcus called again.

“Bring everything for Quiana's period.”

She prepared everything as quickly as possible and took it to his villa.

She had only been away for two or three days, but the simple and elegant villa had completely changed.

The peach tree that Marcus’ father had planted years ago was gone. In its place stood a garden of tulips. The black-and-white furniture had been replaced with pink and pale yellow, colors Marcus used to dislike. The display cabinets were filled with jewelry, designer bags, and expensive gifts.

It was obviously Quiana’s doing.

Yara looked around in silence. She walked to the bedroom, where the light was still on, and knocked on the door.

Marcus opened the door after a moment. He took the items from her hands and then looked at her.

After she washed off the coffee, the wound on her face looked even more alarming. He froze for a second.

“Was it that serious? Did you go to the hospital?”

Yara did not speak. She shook her head.

He rubbed his temples. His tone softened.

“Quiana wasn’t feeling well. She didn’t mean to take it out on you. Don’t take it to heart. I’ll balance out the salary deduction with your year-end bonus. Go to the hospital later. If it’s serious, take a few days off. I’ll approve it. You don’t need to go through the usual process.”

“There’s no need. At the end of this month, I’ll…”

Yara wanted to tell him she was about to resign, but he did not let her finish. He handed her a card and interrupted her.

“Be sensible. I still need you to help me organize a welcome banquet for Quiana. Get some rest and recover.”

The words remained in her throat.

She hummed in agreement, took the card, and left the villa.

The door had barely shut when she heard Quiana’s sweet, clingy voice from inside.

“Marcus, is the herbal tea ready yet? I want you to rub my stomach.”

“I’m coming. Just lie still and don’t move.”

His voice was so gentle and soft, it felt like a stream. Yara gave a silent laugh. There was a hint of self-mockery in her eyes.

She suffered from bad cramps, too. She had fainted at work more than once and had been taken to the hospital by coworkers.

Marcus had been aware. He had approved her leave, but he never visited her. He never made her herbal tea or brought her anything.

Back then, she thought he had been too busy.

But after what happened with Quiana, she understood. It was never a matter of his being busy. He simply did not care about her.

After leaving the villa, Yara went to the hospital to have her wound treated and bandaged.

She rested at home for a few days. The assistant sent her the banquet proposal.

Every detail was strict. The choice of flowers, the types of desserts, and even the servers’ uniforms all had specific requirements.

She only had three days. She pulled herself together and got to work.

After days of nonstop effort, the banquet she organized began right at 7 p.m.

Quiana stepped into the hall in a custom gown as everyone watched.

The guests quickly surrounded her and praised her endlessly. She looked thrilled.

“After all these years, Ms. Xanthe is still as graceful and stunning as ever. Even your welcoming party is so grand. Mr. Quinn’s devotion to you clearly has not changed.”

“I remember back in school when someone confessed to Quiana. Mr. Quinn found out and forced him to transfer. He tore up every love letter she received. When people gossiped about her, he went to confront them and beat them badly enough to send them to the hospital.”

“Everyone knows Quiana is Mr. Quinn’s first love and the apple of his eye. Look at the jewelry she’s wearing tonight. It must be worth tens of millions. That gown is custom-made and one of a kind. Mr. Quinn has never spared any expense when it comes to making her happy.”

A year later, Yelena got a text from Yara. Yara was getting married and had invited her to be a bridesmaid. Yelena was thrilled. She dropped everything and immediately bought a ticket to fly out.Marcus, of course, heard the news from Yelena. His hand paused for a moment before he lowered his eyes and asked casually, pretending not to care.“Getting married already?”Over the past year, he had often heard about Yara’s life from Yelena. He knew she had a boyfriend who loved her. He never expected her to get married. He could not quite put his feelings into words. His vision blurred, and the letters on the page seemed difficult to read. From Yelena’s phone came a soft, gentle voice.“Yeah, it’s about time. I finally found the right person, and I don’t want to wait any longer.”It was Yara. Her voice was calm, but there was a hint of a smile. Just hearing her, you could tell she was happy.Yelena packed her things while talking on the phone.“Really? Are you planning to settle

Quiana had been through a terrible time. She barely ate and barely slept. Everything she had done to Yara had come back to punish her a hundred times over. She trembled in the basement. When the main door opened and light spilled inside, she did not immediately understand what was happening. When Marcus stepped in, she snapped fully awake. She scrambled toward him like he was her only lifeline and clung to him.“Marcus, I was wrong! Please forgive me! I’ll never bother you or Yara again. I’ll stay far away from now on. I’ll never get in your way. Please let me go. I truly know I was wrong!”Quiana begged and cried uncontrollably. She looked completely pitiful.Marcus said nothing. He studied her face carefully. All her innocence and beauty were gone. What remained was nothing but endless desire and greed. How could he have lost the most important person in his life over someone like her?The thought filled him with rage. He wanted to punish her in the worst way. But Yelena and Yar

It was not long before Yelena arrived. As soon as she got Yara’s call, she rushed over. The two of them had not seen each other for a month. The moment Yelena arrived, she threw herself into Yara’s arms.“Yara!”Yara’s expression softened as she caught her.“Yelena, you’re here.”They sat together and talked for a few minutes. When it was time to say goodbye, Yelena could not help feeling guilty.“I’m sorry, Yara. I shouldn’t have let my brother come after you. I’ve caused you so much trouble.”Yara squeezed her cheek gently.“It’s okay. Even if you hadn’t said anything, Marcus would have thought of a way himself. Sometimes it’s better to get the pain over with quickly. It was good that we got everything out of the way this time.”Still, Yelena felt bad. She had not expected Marcus to go so far. He had spent the whole night in the rain as if he did not care about himself. She looked toward Marcus, who was not far away, quietly watching them. She could not help asking the questi

Marcus sat in the coffee shop until it closed. Only then did he finally get up and leave. He did not know what to do. His chest felt tight with pain. The more it hurt, the more clearly he realized how important Yara was to him. He had lost her just like that.If only Quiana had never come back.If only he had realized sooner that he had fallen in love with Yara.If only he had not disappointed her.One possibility after another flashed through his mind, but there was no turning back.He wandered through the unfamiliar streets of a foreign city. Thunder split the sky, and heavy rain began to fall. People on the street ran for shelter and hurried home to escape the storm, but Marcus had nowhere to go.He walked in the rain and repeated Yara’s name under his breath. Before long, he was completely soaked. His phone suddenly rang. He picked it up with a flicker of hope. It was a message from Yelena.[Marcus, come back.]He stared at the words and felt drained. How had things betwe

They had agreed to meet at a coffee shop. When Marcus pushed the door open, the bell above it chimed. He stepped inside and immediately saw Yara sitting in the corner. They had only been apart for a month, but it had felt like a year of agony. Seeing her again felt slightly unreal. She had changed a lot.Whenever she was with him, she had always dressed like a secretary because that was her role. Even after work, even when they tried different things at home, she had always seemed prim and proper to him.On that day, she wore casual clothes. Her hair was tied up, showing her slender, pale neck. For a moment, he felt as if he had gone back to the beginning, to the shy Yara who once had a quiet crush on him.He stood there for a few seconds before walking over with a smile.“Yara. It’s been a while.”He held back the urge to pull her into his arms. He looked at her face with open longing and fascination.“Let’s keep this short. I only agreed to meet because I want to make things

  • The Storm Came Before You   Chapter 18

Yelena sent a message to Yara, but there was a time difference of several hours overseas. She told Marcus to go home first. She said she would let him know as soon as she heard back, but he refused to leave. He insisted on staying at Yelena’s place. He slept on the couch and woke at the slightest sound. Each time, he hoped it was a message from Yara. The next evening, Yelena finally received a reply.[Alright. I’ll meet him.]The message was short, but it gave Marcus hope. Yara was willing to see him. That meant there was still a chance for them.Excited, Marcus immediately booked the earliest flight available.Yelena grabbed his arm and frowned.“Marcus, rest for a day before you go. You haven’t slept properly in days, have you? Since Yara has agreed to see you, she won’t break her word.”Marcus pulled his arm away.“I can’t wait any longer. Ever since Yara left, I have been thinking about her every day. I just want to see her.”The tenderness in his eyes left Yelena deeply
