Chapter 4

Autor: Marigold Cake
"Why didn't you tell us about the old man's condition beforehand? Were you trying to get Chloe killed?" Jacob demanded.

I met his furious gaze. "The handover documents were sent to your email yesterday. They clearly warned in red that under no circumstances were we to bring up the man's grief over losing his family."

Jacob froze for a moment.

Behind him, Chloe tugged at his sleeve, her eyes red. "Jacob, I didn't see any documents. I just wanted to show the audience the most authentic side of what was happening."

Jacob immediately clasped her hand. Then he turned on me.

"Stop trying to shift the blame!" he yelled. "You were pissed because I took you off this investigation, so you deliberately set us up to fail, didn't you? Lena, when did you become so selfish? So unreasonable?"

He didn't care about my feelings at all. He berated me in front of everyone without a second thought.

I looked at him and almost laughed. "Jacob, you didn't even read the email before bringing her here to take credit for my work. And now that something's gone wrong, you expect me to take the fall?"

I'd clearly struck a nerve. Jacob's face turned livid.

"Get back to the station. Now!"

I ignored him and went to help the medical workers calm the old man's family.

Once the crowd had dispersed, I crouched down and handed out the candy I'd originally brought for the children affected by the disaster.

Jacob walked over. His voice suddenly softened when he noticed the mud splattered across my pant legs. "I was too harsh just now."

He reached out as if to wipe the dirt from my face, but I turned my head away.

"When things settle down, I'll take you on that beach vacation you've always wanted. How about it?"

He was always like this. He'd slap me down, then offer me something sweet.

I remembered when I'd first joined the station. Chloe had put an arm around my shoulders and said, "Lena, I admire your investigative reports more than anything. When you go out into the field, I'll be your camerawoman.

"We're going to be the kind of reporters who actually make a difference in people's lives."

That was why I had always made a point of documenting every family's circumstances whenever I scouted a location.

I knew Chloe had never been to a disaster zone, so I'd even left my own abrasion-resistant shell jacket on her desk.

It turned out I was the only one who had ever taken those ideals seriously.

...

The next day, Chloe showed up at my apartment with a box of chocolates.

"Lena, don't be mad at Jacob anymore." She set the chocolates on the table with an aggrieved expression. "What happened yesterday was my fault. I didn't read the documents carefully."

She took my hand. "Please don't break up with him over this. You two have been together for so many years. It isn't worth fighting over me."

I pulled my hand away.

"Chloe, enough with the act." I looked her straight in the eye. "The door's right there. See yourself out."

It was the first time since we'd known each other as kids that I'd ever told her to leave.

Chloe froze, and tears filled her eyes.

"Lena, how did you become like this..." She covered her face and ran out.

That afternoon, the station held an emergency press conference to address the interview incident at the evacuation center.

I sat below the stage and watched Jacob.

Jacob stood before a wall of cameras and microphones from dozens of media outlets and read the prepared statement without so much as a flicker of emotion.

"As for this incident, our reporter Lena Foster made serious oversights during the preliminary investigation.

"She failed to communicate critical information to the field reporting team, which ultimately led to this tragedy.

"The station has decided to suspend Lena Foster from her duties."

Every eye in the room turned toward me.

I remained completely calm. I felt no anger and made no attempt to defend myself.

After the press conference, Jacob stopped me backstage.

"Don't look at me like that." He frowned. "If Chloe takes this disciplinary action, her career will be ruined. You're going to be my partner again anyway. Taking the blame this once isn't a big deal."

He genuinely believed he'd found the perfect balance.

"You really think I'll ever be your partner again?" I asked.

"Stop making a fuss." He sighed. "I know this was unfair to you. How about we go out for your favorite local food tonight, hmm?"

I ignored him and walked straight out of the station.

When I returned to my apartment, I stuffed the last few pieces of clothing into my suitcase.

My phone lit up with a WhatsApp message from Jacob.

Jacob: [I've made a reservation at our usual place. Stop sulking. Be good.]

I glanced at the plane ticket on the table. My destination was Silver Ridge, the disaster zone where a real investigative reporting team was waiting for me.

Later, as the departure announcement for my flight came over the airport speakers, I opened Jacob's profile.

Without hesitation, I tapped Block.

I ignored him and kept walking."Are you really going to be this heartless?" His voice followed me from behind.I stopped and turned. "Jacob, what else do you have to say?"The corner of his mouth twitched. "I read your reports. They're really good. Better than anything I ever forced you to rewrite.""Is that so? Thanks for the compliment." My voice remained calm."I heard you were nominated for Investigative Reporting." He looked at me. "Do you remember? It rained so hard during our junior year. I told you we'd win this award together someday."Of course I remembered. It had once been the promise I treasured most, and the chain that kept me foolishly following him for five years."I don't remember." I looked him straight in the eye. "I make a habit of taking out the trash from my past every day."Jacob's eyes reddened. "I know you hate me. But Lena, I know I was wrong. All this time, I've thought about you every single day—"I cut off his self-indulgent display, "Stop. You're

Early the next morning, Jacob came to find me. He looked terribly haggard, and his bloodshot eyes made it obvious he hadn't slept."Lena, come back with me." His voice was hoarse, almost pleading. "As long as you're willing to testify that Chloe altered those materials on her own, I can clear my name."I looked at him. "Why should I help you?"He took a step closer, his voice more urgent. "We grew up together. Can you really stand by and watch them blacklist me?""That was your choice." I didn't back down. "You were willing to step on me just to promote her. Now that she's crashed and burned, you're coming to me to clean up your mess? Jacob, what exactly do you take me for?"Jacob swallowed hard. "I know I was wrong before. I shouldn't have ignored your feelings, and I shouldn't have favored her. I regret it, Lena. I really do."His voice dropped to a near whisper, as if he were begging me to believe him.Once, I might have softened. Now, he only made me sick."You don't regret

That afternoon, an aftershock struck near the evacuation center. It wasn't strong, but it was enough to trigger another landslide.I was halfway up the mountain, interviewing a fruit farmer, when the ground beneath my feet began to shake violently."Run!" someone shouted.Rocks of all sizes came tumbling down the mountainside.I shielded my camera and followed the villagers downhill.Mud had already slid down the slope and blocked the road ahead, so we had no choice but to take a narrow trail off to the side. The trail was steep and slippery. The recent rain had left the ground slick and treacherous.Suddenly, I lost my footing and slid down the slope. In a panic, I grabbed hold of a dead tree beside me.Mud continued to pour downhill.Tom stood above me and shouted in alarm, "Lena, hold on tight! I'm going to find a rope!"The rough bark scraped my arm raw, and a sharp, burning pain shot through it.Just then, someone came sliding down the trail above me. He practically r

I closed my notebook. "Jacob, we're already broken up. I don't owe you an explanation for where I go.""Broken up? Did I agree to that?" Jacob let out a cold laugh. "There's a limit to how far you can take a tantrum. Are you really willing to throw away your entire career just because you took the fall for someone else?"He reached for my arm. "Come back with me! I've already had someone at the city station suppress the disciplinary action. As long as you come back now, Chloe can still be your assistant."I stepped out of his reach. "Jacob, Do you not understand a word I'm saying?"I stood and met his stare. "I don't need your charity, and I'm done playing second fiddle to anyone."Jacob's expression darkened. "You think one well-received report at Silver Ridge News means you've established yourself?"Without me vetting your work, those dry, lifeless s of yours wouldn't even make it on air."He still carried that same air of superiority. In his eyes, I was nothing without him.

It had been raining for days in the Silver Ridge disaster zone. Muddy water streamed down the slopes, leaving the village roads riddled with deep, uneven ruts.I wore my shell jacket and picked my way through the mud, each step sinking to a different depth. This was one of the hardest-hit villages. Landslides and mudslides had cut off large sections of the roads. My shoes were already filled with muddy water, but I kept the camera pressed securely against my chest, careful to protect it.The new team moved fast. No one was going to go easy on me just because I was new.Even so, that was exactly the pace I needed. After leaving all that endless emotional drain behind, my mind was finally quiet. My colleague Tom Henderson, who was walking ahead of me, turned to warn me, "Lena, that stretch up ahead is rough. Be careful.""Okay." I stepped onto a relatively sturdy rock and moved forward, but my foot suddenly slipped. My whole body lurched sideways.A hand caught my arm just in ti

By 8:00 p.m., the dinner on the table had gone completely cold.Jacob glanced at his watch, picked up his phone, and dialed Lena's number.A recorded message came through. "Sorry, the number you're trying to reach is currently on another call."He frowned and tried again. The same message played.Jacob switched to WhatsApp and sent Lena a message.Jacob: [Enough. The food's already cold. I'll send the driver to pick you up.]A single gray check mark appeared beside the message, confirming that she'd blocked him.Jacob leaned back in his chair and loosened his tie. He let out a cold scoff, then rose, paid the bill, and drove straight to Lena's apartment. He entered the passcode, and the door unlocked. The living room was dark and silent.Jacob flicked on the light. The apartment was completely empty, and even the air seemed to carry a chill. He hurried into the bedroom. The closet door stood half open, but Lena's clothes were gone. The vanity was bare. Even the interview not
