Chapter 3

Autor: Marigold Cake
"Jacob, what you said in there... Lena must be angry." It was Chloe's voice.

"What does she have to be mad about?" Jacob let out a soft laugh. "She's just too rigid. I bet she'll come to me with the revised and apologize within half a day."

"You really know she'll never leave you." Chloe's voice was playful and teasing.

"It was just a joke between friends," Jacob replied casually.

I stood behind the door with my cup of water in hand. I didn't push the door open. I didn't storm in and demand an explanation. I simply turned around and walked back to my desk.

After work, I stopped Jacob in the underground parking garage.

"We need to talk."

Jacob was about to open his car door. Chloe was already sitting in the passenger seat.

"About what? Did you fix the ?" He glanced at his watch. "I've got to take Chloe to the hospital for a follow-up. She caught a bit of a cold after getting soaked that day."

I looked him in the eyes, my voice quiet but steady. "Let's break up."

Jacob's hand froze on the car door. He turned and looked me up and down.

"Lena, what are you making a fuss again about now?" Irritation filled his voice. "Is this because I didn't let you go out into the field today? Can you stop mixing work with our relationship? You're always making trouble for yourself."

I stared at him. "I'm not making a fuss."

"Enough," he cut me off and opened the driver's door. "I don't have time to humor you right now. Calm down."

I watched the exhaust fumes drift across the ground as his car pulled away.

I remembered the day we graduated from college. Beneath the plane trees, the sunlight was blazing.

Jacob had worn a white shirt, his press badge around his neck, when he reached out his hand to me. "Come work the front lines with me. We'll win the biggest award."

Because of those words, I'd turned down an offer from the documentary division.

I'd devoted all my time to practicing broadcast delivery and studying emergency-response knowledge.

Every time we went out on assignment, I'd checked his equipment three times.

I'd thought we were fighting side by side. Instead, I'd spent all these years being compared to Chloe.

He said I wasn't adaptable enough. He said I didn't know how to play the social game.

I took off the press badge around my neck and slipped it into my bag.

For the first time, I decided to live for myself.

...

I submitted my resignation to the station and began my one-week handover period.

Dale Davis, one of our senior cameramen, came over to my desk.

"Lena, Jacob took Chloe to that evacuation center you scouted before." He lowered his voice, clearly angry on my behalf. "He didn't even tell you. He just stole your story assignment."

My fingers paused over the keyboard.

The situation at that evacuation center was complicated. Several elderly people who lived alone were extremely resistant to appearing on camera. It had taken me an entire month to slowly earn their trust.

"Let him." I continued organizing my handover documents.

Dale sighed. "I'm just pissed off for you. You pulled so many all-nighters over that story."

That afternoon, the station's internal group chat suddenly erupted.

Something had gone wrong at the evacuation center.

During an interview with an elderly man who had lost his grandson, Chloe had repeatedly pressed him for details in an attempt to make the story more emotional.

The man became overwhelmed and collapsed on the spot. His family members and other displaced residents surrounded the news van.

I immediately grabbed my coat and ran outside.

Even though I was leaving soon, I couldn't stand by and watch those disaster victims suffer a second time.

When I arrived at the evacuation center, the scene was in complete chaos.

Jacob kept Chloe firmly behind him, shielding her from the furious crowd.

"Everyone, please calm down! There was a problem during the handover!" Jacob shouted at the angry family members.

I pushed my way through the crowd.

The moment Jacob saw me, his expression darkened. He strode toward me and immediately laid into me.

"Lena, how did you handle the handover?"

I ignored him and kept walking."Are you really going to be this heartless?" His voice followed me from behind.I stopped and turned. "Jacob, what else do you have to say?"The corner of his mouth twitched. "I read your reports. They're really good. Better than anything I ever forced you to rewrite.""Is that so? Thanks for the compliment." My voice remained calm."I heard you were nominated for Investigative Reporting." He looked at me. "Do you remember? It rained so hard during our junior year. I told you we'd win this award together someday."Of course I remembered. It had once been the promise I treasured most, and the chain that kept me foolishly following him for five years."I don't remember." I looked him straight in the eye. "I make a habit of taking out the trash from my past every day."Jacob's eyes reddened. "I know you hate me. But Lena, I know I was wrong. All this time, I've thought about you every single day—"I cut off his self-indulgent display, "Stop. You're

Early the next morning, Jacob came to find me. He looked terribly haggard, and his bloodshot eyes made it obvious he hadn't slept."Lena, come back with me." His voice was hoarse, almost pleading. "As long as you're willing to testify that Chloe altered those materials on her own, I can clear my name."I looked at him. "Why should I help you?"He took a step closer, his voice more urgent. "We grew up together. Can you really stand by and watch them blacklist me?""That was your choice." I didn't back down. "You were willing to step on me just to promote her. Now that she's crashed and burned, you're coming to me to clean up your mess? Jacob, what exactly do you take me for?"Jacob swallowed hard. "I know I was wrong before. I shouldn't have ignored your feelings, and I shouldn't have favored her. I regret it, Lena. I really do."His voice dropped to a near whisper, as if he were begging me to believe him.Once, I might have softened. Now, he only made me sick."You don't regret

That afternoon, an aftershock struck near the evacuation center. It wasn't strong, but it was enough to trigger another landslide.I was halfway up the mountain, interviewing a fruit farmer, when the ground beneath my feet began to shake violently."Run!" someone shouted.Rocks of all sizes came tumbling down the mountainside.I shielded my camera and followed the villagers downhill.Mud had already slid down the slope and blocked the road ahead, so we had no choice but to take a narrow trail off to the side. The trail was steep and slippery. The recent rain had left the ground slick and treacherous.Suddenly, I lost my footing and slid down the slope. In a panic, I grabbed hold of a dead tree beside me.Mud continued to pour downhill.Tom stood above me and shouted in alarm, "Lena, hold on tight! I'm going to find a rope!"The rough bark scraped my arm raw, and a sharp, burning pain shot through it.Just then, someone came sliding down the trail above me. He practically r

I closed my notebook. "Jacob, we're already broken up. I don't owe you an explanation for where I go.""Broken up? Did I agree to that?" Jacob let out a cold laugh. "There's a limit to how far you can take a tantrum. Are you really willing to throw away your entire career just because you took the fall for someone else?"He reached for my arm. "Come back with me! I've already had someone at the city station suppress the disciplinary action. As long as you come back now, Chloe can still be your assistant."I stepped out of his reach. "Jacob, Do you not understand a word I'm saying?"I stood and met his stare. "I don't need your charity, and I'm done playing second fiddle to anyone."Jacob's expression darkened. "You think one well-received report at Silver Ridge News means you've established yourself?"Without me vetting your work, those dry, lifeless s of yours wouldn't even make it on air."He still carried that same air of superiority. In his eyes, I was nothing without him.

It had been raining for days in the Silver Ridge disaster zone. Muddy water streamed down the slopes, leaving the village roads riddled with deep, uneven ruts.I wore my shell jacket and picked my way through the mud, each step sinking to a different depth. This was one of the hardest-hit villages. Landslides and mudslides had cut off large sections of the roads. My shoes were already filled with muddy water, but I kept the camera pressed securely against my chest, careful to protect it.The new team moved fast. No one was going to go easy on me just because I was new.Even so, that was exactly the pace I needed. After leaving all that endless emotional drain behind, my mind was finally quiet. My colleague Tom Henderson, who was walking ahead of me, turned to warn me, "Lena, that stretch up ahead is rough. Be careful.""Okay." I stepped onto a relatively sturdy rock and moved forward, but my foot suddenly slipped. My whole body lurched sideways.A hand caught my arm just in ti

By 8:00 p.m., the dinner on the table had gone completely cold.Jacob glanced at his watch, picked up his phone, and dialed Lena's number.A recorded message came through. "Sorry, the number you're trying to reach is currently on another call."He frowned and tried again. The same message played.Jacob switched to WhatsApp and sent Lena a message.Jacob: [Enough. The food's already cold. I'll send the driver to pick you up.]A single gray check mark appeared beside the message, confirming that she'd blocked him.Jacob leaned back in his chair and loosened his tie. He let out a cold scoff, then rose, paid the bill, and drove straight to Lena's apartment. He entered the passcode, and the door unlocked. The living room was dark and silent.Jacob flicked on the light. The apartment was completely empty, and even the air seemed to carry a chill. He hurried into the bedroom. The closet door stood half open, but Lena's clothes were gone. The vanity was bare. Even the interview not
