Kael did not sleep.

He sat beside Aria’s bed while the fire burned lower and the room slowly filled with the pale grey light that came before morning, watching her breathe and trying to understand how quickly a person could become the center of every decision you made. Brenna had gone twice to check the mark. Each time it had changed. Not dramatically, not enough for anyone without experience to notice, but the violet at its center had deepened, and the skin around it had become colder.

  • The Substitute Luna   CHAPTER 25 The Anchor of Ash

The water struck the chamber hard enough to knock Aria against the stone wall.Kael caught her before she fell. Behind them, the passage they had crossed groaned beneath the pressure of the rising tide. Black water spilled over the steps, carrying grey ash and fragments of stone.“Cassian!” Aria shouted. Her voice vanished beneath the roar.“He’s below us,” Brenna said. The black line on her wrist had spread almost to her palm. “Lyra is keeping the passage open through the anchor. If the water reaches the upper chamber, we may lose the way back.”“Then we find the anchor and shut it down,” Kael replied.A growl rolled from the stairwell. Elias raised his blade, and the guards behind him moved to form a line.“Wait,” Brenna warned. “That thing wants us to attack. The old magic feeds on fear and violence. If we charge blindly, we may give it exactly what it needs.”Aria could barely listen. All she could think about was Cassian alone in the dark, frightened and waiting for her. Every in

The black line beneath Brenna’s skin pulsed once, then disappeared beneath her sleeve. She clutched her wrist as if she could hold the darkness in place by force. Aria stepped toward her, but Brenna recoiled with a sharp breath.“Don’t touch it,” she warned. “I don’t know what it will do if it recognises another person’s blood.”Kael’s expression hardened. “You are not going into the passage until we understand what that mark is.”“If we waste time, Cassian pays for it,” Brenna replied. Her voice trembled, but she held his gaze. “Lyra has bound me to the same magic she is using on him. I may be able to follow the tether from the inside.”“Or she may be using you to lead us into another trap,” Aria said.Brenna did not argue. “That is possible. Which is why you should not trust me blindly. Watch what I do, and stop me if I turn against you.”It was not a comforting offer, but it was honest. Aria had begun to understand that honesty was sometimes the only thing standing between fear and

No one moved at first. The laugh drifted down the corridor and disappeared, leaving behind a silence so complete that Aria could hear the blood rushing in her ears. She stepped toward the door, but Kael raised one hand—not to stop her, only to signal the guards to hold position.“It is another echo,” Brenna said, though the tremor in her voice betrayed her. “Lyra is using the house to make us hear what we fear most.”“Then tell us why she has your pendant,” Aria replied.Brenna stared at the silver chain on the table. “Because I made a mistake long before either of you came here.”Kael dismissed the guards and shut the door. “Start at the beginning.”Brenna sat down slowly. For years, she had been the pack’s quiet keeper of old rites, the woman who remembered forgotten names and could explain why certain stones were never to be moved. Aria had trusted her because she had treated Cassian with patience and never looked at him as if his power made him a threat. Now fear had carved lines

Aria pressed both palms against the basin. The stone was cold enough to sting, but she could feel Cassian on the other side, a faint warmth buried beneath the unnatural chill. “Listen to me, baby. Look at me, not at her. You have done nothing wrong.”Cassian’s lower lip trembled. “I tried to be brave.”“You are brave. Brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared. It means you keep listening to the people who love you, even when someone is trying to confuse you.”Lyra’s smile sharpened. “Such a beautiful little speech. You have always been good at making him feel safe, Aria. It is a pity you cannot make him powerful enough to survive what is coming.”Kael stepped toward the basin. The air shifted with his Alpha presence, making the carved symbols glimmer. “Release my son.”“Your son?” Lyra tilted her head. “You learned the word rather late, didn’t you, Kael? You were absent for his first fever, his first steps, the first time he asked why other children had fathers who came home. You cannot si

The words on the parchment seemed to darken as Aria stared at them. The heir comes willingly, or the Luna comes to collect what remains. Lyra had not simply taken Cassian. She had arranged the abduction like a choice and expected Aria to destroy herself trying to make the right one.“She wants me to go alone,” Aria said. Her voice sounded strangely steady, even to her own ears. “She wants me frightened enough to follow the trail she leaves without thinking about what she might be waiting for.”Kael folded the parchment with controlled precision, but the muscles in his jaw were tight enough to ache. “Then she will be disappointed. Nobody goes anywhere alone.”“And if she threatens to hurt him unless I come?” Aria asked. “You cannot order me to stay behind while my son is in her hands.”“I would never ask you to do that.” He met her gaze. “But I will not let you walk into a trap without a plan. Cassian needs both of us alive.”It was the right answer, and somehow that made the fear wors

The three knocks echoed through the sanctuary long after the sound should have faded. The ring continued to hum in Brenna’s palm, and the black water in the old well trembled despite the stillness of the air. Aria stepped away from the altar, instinctively searching for a path back to the forest, but the tether on her wrist tightened and drew her attention to the cracked floor.“Put the ring down,” Brenna said. She did so carefully. The instant the metal touched the stone, a thin circle of black water spread around the altar. It widened without spilling over the uneven floor, forming a perfect ring that reflected a sky no one could see. At its centre, the stone seemed to become transparent.Stairs appeared beneath it.Elias swore under his breath. Kael moved in front of Aria, then stopped himself and glanced back at her. “Do you want to leave?”The fact that he asked mattered. Aria looked at the opening. Every instinct told her that the stairs led toward the answer they needed, and ev
