Kaine
A sharp pain hits the middle of my chest as the woman in my arms elbows me, and my arms release their hold in surprise. The woman, Ember, doesn’t hesitate as she darts for the door. Not so fast.
I quickly stride forward and reclaim my hold on her before she can escape. If this woman is my Mate, I will find out. She sure is a feisty thing.
Who is this woman with the tenacity to lay a hand on not just an Alpha, but a Prince? I should be angry, but I can’t help but find myself curious about the creature held within my arms.
She’s definitely fierce enough to be my match, and something about her feels familiar, like the woman from last night. I can’t help but wonder if this could be it. Could this woman be my Mate?
If she is, she clearly doesn’t want to be. I tighten my grip as she continues to struggle until I’m sure she won’t be able to flee again. If she is my Mate, I am sure she will come around.
I reach again for the woman’s collar, but am interrupted by a knock at the door. My sister Lila’s voice rings out, “Kaine! I found the woman you were searching for!” I hesitate but release the woman and stride to the door in order to deal with the interruption first.
I open the door, and Lila beams at me, holding the necklace left on my pillow and standing with another woman I vaguely recognize. “Kaine, Bianca is the woman from last night.”
I stare at my sister, unsure if she’s joking or not. I was told that every woman at the palace last night was subject to inspection. If Bianca was my Mate, how had she escaped their notice?
Bianca steps forward and addresses me directly. “It’s true. That necklace is mine.” I stare at Bianca, shocked, the woman behind me forgotten.
I can’t help the hope that sparks in my heart, despite being uncertain of her motives. Why had she run? “Why didn’t you come forward sooner?”
“You are an Alpha and a Prince. I was nervous and worried that you would reject me, so I hid behind Lila to avoid the inspection. I’m sorry.” Bianca hangs her head, seeming genuinely sorry for the trouble she caused.
Bianca meets my gaze and slides her sleeve below her shoulder, revealing the Royal Mark. “I shouldn’t have left. I’m sorry.”
I feel Rafe’s hope as he reacts to her reveal, but he feels uncertain. “This is different.”
She bears the mark. This must be her.
Bianca, seeming to sense my hesitation, continues. “Don’t you feel the Mate bond?”
At her words, I try to scent her, trying to feel the connection from last night. There is something there, but it lacks the pull from last night. Perhaps the intensity was only intended to draw us together.
Rafe hesitates, unsure. “We should feel more.”
That was the call to bond. There’s something here, and she bears the Royal Mark.
Bianca meets my eyes again. “I’m only here to ask that you at least think this over and don’t reject me too quickly. I’ve dreamt of finding my Mate, and I hope that you will at least give me a chance.”
Her words strengthen my resolve. I know my reputation, but I will not reject my Mate. “I wouldn’t reject you. You are to be my Luna.”
Ember
He’s making her his Luna? I was certain he would reject any Mate that came his way, but was it possible that Nara was right, that this is different? No, that can’t be.
He’s not rejecting Bianca because, well, she’s Bianca. She’s beautiful and well-liked among the pack. If he knew I was his true Mate, rejection would be swift.
Bianca is everything I’m not. She is pretty, social, and charming—qualities someone would want in a Mate. I, on the other hand, fly under the radar with my plain looks and awkward demeanor.
There is no way Prince Kaine could accept those qualities in a Mate. Nara begins to whine at the thought, but I tune her out.
How is Bianca doing this? She has to be lying, but the only way to get that mark is to be mated to a member of the royal family. It should be impossible for her to fake being his Mate.
I am Prince Kaine’s Mate, so how did she get that mark? I can’t help but gawk at my sister as I wonder how she pulled this off. She looks ready to pitch herself into his arms at his declaration of making her Luna.
As he looks at her, my own mark begins to burn at his perceived betrayal, and I can’t help the sinking feeling that comes over me. Nara starts to howl, and I have to fight to keep her from taking control. We can’t risk revealing ourselves.
Nara whines in protest, bristling as Bianca moves closer to Prince Kaine. I stand to leave, pushing myself toward the door before I am forced to do something I will regret. Bianca smiles smugly at me as I pass, causing my mark to burn red hot, but I continue to make my way toward the door.
I will not reveal myself after getting this close to freedom. Whatever Bianca has done to fake that mark is not my problem. If she becomes Prince Kaine’s Luna, I will be free to live my life as a guard.
As I start to push open the door, Prince Kaine’s deep voice calls from behind me. “Ember!”
I freeze, recalling how I had attacked the Prince in my desperation to escape. A fresh wave of panic washes over me as I consider the brashness of my actions.
I was desperate not to reveal myself as his Mate, but I struck the Prince. There will be consequences for what I have done. I turn back to face Prince Kaine, steeling myself for his rebuke.
I can’t help but flinch as he approaches, but I force myself to meet his gaze as he comes to a stop in front of me. The mark on my arm flares in pain at his approach, and I take a deep breath as I try to disregard the pain.
Nara, still restless, whines, but her influence over my actions lessens as panic floods my system. What punishment will I face? Will I be removed from the royal guard, or will it be something worse?
I brace myself as Prince Kaine studies me carefully for a moment, as if there is some sort of puzzle that he is trying to solve, before finally speaking. “Ember, you are to be assigned as my personal guard.”
I am stunned, unable to parse his reasoning for this decision. Why would he make me his personal guard? I am just a trainee—and a female at that.
My heart races as I think about the implications of his decision. This decision means that I will be with Prince Kaine every day. If my mark burns this badly now, the proximity required to be his personal guard might undo me.
The Captain of the Guard freezes before he can grab my arm, shocked at Prince Kaine’s declaration. “You’re… protecting the mole?” He asked, stunned.A murmur goes through the crowd, everyone else appearing as shocked about Prince Kaine’s demands as the captain is. Prince Kaine has a reputation for showing no mercy to traitors, and now he is giving me a private audience. There is a beat, but no one leaves, reluctant to believe me innocent or to miss any drama.Prince Kaine’s gaze sweeps across the room giving nothing away. “Did you not hear me?” I said, “get out.” His demand is met by a rush of movement as most of the guards file out of the room, but the captain and a few onlookers remain, eager to see what happens next. The captain eyes me, pure hatred shining from his dark pupils. The captain turns at Prince Kaine, a determined look in his eyes and he pushes, “The evidence is right in front of us. Just being exiled is already the lightest punishment for a traitor. Your Highness, this
I watch Prince Kaine as he addresses another attendant. “Bring out the items I have prepared.”The attendant looks at me for a moment, shocked but quickly catches himself and smiles at me. “Yes, of course.”He’s gone for a moment before striding back to the front of the shop an array of items in hand. As he brings the items out, he also starts to gush, “These really look stunning on someone as beautiful as you. I think a few of these pieces in particular will complement your refined aura.”I blink at him, confused and he continues, “You two make such a lovely couple. I am so thrilled to see the Crown Prince happy! We have prepared only the finest gifts in the entire kingdom for you to enjoy.”It takes me a moment, but I finally understand, the attendant thinks that I am Prince Kaine’s fiancée. I glance at Prince Kaine to see if he is going to say anything, but he just stands there, his expression unreadable.I look back to the attendant, feeling awkward, to clarify, “Oh um... I’m just
Kaine took a deep, steadying breath before walking back into the event. He was trying his best to act as if everything was fine, but he couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling his revelation had left him with. From across the room his half-brother Jasper smirked as he called out “Everything okay, big brother? You seem… distracted.”Kaine scowled at Jasper, but didn’t reply as he made his way back toward Bianca, who smiled reassuringly at him. “Is everything alright?” Bianca had seen Ember’s exit and was upset that Kaine had followed her but was trying not to let her jealousy show.“It’s fine,” Kaine snapped, a little more harshly than he intended before fixing his tone. “Sorry yes, Ember looked like she was going to pass out. I didn’t want to upset you, so I went to check on her myself.”Kaine took a deep breath before leading Bianca over to meet his father, and stepmother. Kaine had needed a few minutes to gather himself, before returning to the event and now, his father, the King, was lo
EmberPrince Kaine angles me out of view and his body tenses at his brother’s approach. I have an idea why. There have been rumors that the two half brothers don’t get along at best and are direct rivals at worst. There are even whispers that the Alpha King would prefer Prince Jasper to be his successor. If it’s true that it is the King’s desire to strip Prince Kaine of his title and right to succession, he has so far been unable to. Prince Kaine’s military achievements are too impressive to strip him of his title or succession without due cause.Prince Kaine has earned his right to inherit the throne one day. This fact is rumored to be a sore spot for both Price Jasper, and his mother, the Queen, who wants nothing more to see her own son crowned King one day.Prince Jasper’s tone shifts to something lighter, mocking as he regards his brother now. “Didn’t think you had it in you, brother. Showing a softer side now? What a revelation. So, all those omegas who claimed into your bed and
The cocky look slips from Bianca’s face as she processes what I’ve said. She shifts uncomfortably, avoiding my gaze as she replies, “That’s impossible. You must’ve seen wrong.”I know there is no way Bianca’s Mark could be real. I am Prince Kaine’s true mate, so how did she fake her mark? Catching her without it provides me the perfect opportunity to learn more.I keep calm as I regard my sister, catching her eye as I push, “Why so nervous? If it’s real, just let me see it again. That’ll clear things up.”Irritation flashes in Bianca’s eyes as she lets her defensiveness get the better of her. “I suggest that you mind your own business, or I’ll tell Father, you bullied me in the palace. You know he’d throw you out in a heartbeat.”Bianca is right, my father has always chosen her side over mine, but with my new position as Prince Kaine’s personal guard, I wouldn’t be out on the street. I narrow my eyes at Bianca, choosing to stand my ground, “I’m not interested in your business, but if
Prince Kaine stands with his back to the door, blocking me from view as Jake, his beta enters the room. “You entered without permission. That’s against protocol,” he snaps. I hear Jake pause as if confused. Jake clears his throat, and I hear the sound of footsteps retreating as he backs out of the room. After a moment I hear the door swing shut, and I become all too aware that I am still standing in Prince Kaine’s arms. My Mate Bond flares again, making me reluctant to step away, and I can’t help but breathe in his scent of leather, pine, and musk as he holds me. My head swims and I can’t bring myself to sever our connection.I fight the urge to lean in, barely stopping to wonder why he hasn’t released me until I feel his fingers brush against the bare skin of my shoulder. My clothes, barely on to begin with, must have shifted as he maneuvered me out of Jake’s line of sight. My shoulder has been bared for him to see.I snap out of it, heart beating fast as I quickly step out of his ar
