Chapter 3: The Kingdom’s Greatest Fear

The second roar rolled across the Night Empire like distant thunder, but there was nothing natural about the sound. It seemed to rise from beneath the earth itself, vibrating through the castle walls until the polished obsidian beneath everyone’s feet trembled. Every vampire in the courtyard instinctively reached for a weapon, while the royal guards rushed to surround King Lucien.

No one noticed that Nyx had not moved.

She stood at the center of the altar, her silver eyes fixed on the dark horizon beyond Blackthorn Castle. There was no fear in her expression, only a quiet grief that suggested she had heard that terrible sound many times before.

Lucien watched her carefully. He had faced beasts capable of leveling entire cities and enemies whose names had become legends of terror, yet nothing had unsettled him quite like this woman. She carried no visible weapon, issued no threats, and displayed no hostility. Still, her very presence had shaken the foundations of his kingdom.

“What escaped?” Lucien asked, breaking the heavy silence.

Nyx did not answer immediately. Her gaze remained fixed on the distant mountains, where thick black clouds had begun gathering unnaturally fast.

“They have not escaped,” she replied at last. “Not yet.”

A murmur swept through the nobles.

“Then what was that roar?” demanded Duke Aldric, his confidence returning now that several guards stood between him and the mysterious woman.

Nyx finally turned toward him.

“It was hope.”

The duke frowned.

“I don’t understand.”

“You will.”

Her quiet certainty unsettled everyone far more than a direct threat would have.

Prince Caelan stepped forward, unable to hide the anger burning beneath his composed expression. Unlike the others, he refused to believe that fate had chosen this stranger to stand beside the throne he had secretly dreamed of claiming himself.

“This is enough,” he declared loudly. “The empire is already falling into panic, and we continue listening to a woman who admits she does not belong here.”

He turned toward Lucien.

“Your Majesty, she has cursed this kingdom. The ritual failed the moment she appeared. We must break the bond before whatever evil she brought spreads any further.”

Several nobles immediately voiced their agreement.

“The prince is right.”

“She must be imprisoned.”

“Destroy the marriage mark.”

“Seal her magic.”

The cries grew louder until they echoed throughout the courtyard.

Lucien listened without interruption, his crimson eyes never leaving Nyx. Throughout the accusations, she remained silent. She neither defended herself nor protested their words. She simply endured them with the quiet patience of someone accustomed to being misunderstood.

That troubled him more than the accusations themselves.

If she truly possessed unimaginable power, why did she stand there allowing herself to be condemned?

High Priestess Selene finally stepped forward, raising both hands for silence.

“The Crimson Vow cannot be broken,” she said firmly. “Not by magic, not by force, and not by the will of any king.”

Caelan turned sharply toward her.

“There must be a way.”

“There isn’t.”

“There has to be!”

Selene’s expression hardened.

“The marriage was witnessed by the Blood Eclipse itself. The ancient covenant has already accepted them. If anyone attempts to sever the bond…” She hesitated, her face growing pale. “…the consequences are unknown.”

The courtyard fell silent once more.

For over a thousand years, no one had ever questioned the Crimson Vow because no one had ever needed to. The ritual had always been flawless. There were no records explaining what would happen if fate itself appeared to make a mistake.

A captain of the royal guard hurried into the courtyard, his armor covered in dirt as though he had ridden without stopping.

He dropped to one knee before Lucien.

“Your Majesty, we’ve received reports from every province.”

Lucien’s expression remained calm.

“Speak.”

“The dead have risen throughout the empire.”

Gasps spread among the nobles despite having expected the report.

“They are leaving their graves peacefully,” the captain continued. “They are not attacking the living, but they refuse to return to their resting places. Entire cemeteries are now filled with wandering spirits and corpses.”

One elderly noble crossed himself instinctively.

“This has never happened.”

The captain nodded grimly.

“There is more.”

Lucien’s eyes narrowed.

“In the northern province, several souls simply… disappeared.”

“What do you mean, disappeared?” Selene asked.

“The priests witnessed it. Newly deceased villagers vanished before the rites could be performed. There were no spirits. No passage into the afterlife. Nothing.”

Nyx quietly closed her eyes.

Lucien noticed.

“You expected this.”

She opened her eyes slowly.

“I feared it.”

The king took several measured steps toward her until only a few feet separated them. Every guard tensed, ready to intervene if necessary, but Lucien raised a hand, stopping them.

“You owe this kingdom answers.”

“I know.”

“Then start talking.”

For the first time since arriving, Nyx looked directly into his eyes without looking away.

“Since the beginning of creation, every soul has crossed a bridge between life and death.”

Her voice remained gentle, yet every word carried through the silent courtyard.

“I have stood at the end of that bridge since the first living creature drew its last breath. I guided every soul across, ensuring none were lost between worlds.”

She glanced at the glowing silver marriage mark around her wrist.

“But the moment your ritual bound me to this realm…”

She paused.

“…I could no longer reach the bridge.”

A chill settled over the gathering.

“The souls have no guide,” she continued softly. “Some remain trapped in their bodies. Some wander between worlds. Others are lost entirely.”

Duke Aldric shook his head in disbelief.

“One woman cannot control death itself.”

Nyx looked at him with quiet sadness.

“I am not controlling it.”

She lowered her gaze.

“I am death.”

Everyone gasped, no one even seemed capable of breathing.

Lucien searched her face for deception, but he found none. There was no pride in her confession, no arrogance, only exhaustion.

It was the expression of someone carrying a burden no one else could possibly understand.

Then another sound shattered the silence.

A loud crack echoed across the courtyard.

Everyone turned toward the sacred altar.

A thin black fracture had appeared across its surface.

Another followed.

Then another.

The glowing runes that had protected the altar for centuries flickered violently before fading one by one.

High Priestess Selene stared in horror.

“The altar…” she whispered. “It’s dying.”

Before anyone could react, a wave of freezing wind swept through the courtyard with such force that cloaks whipped through the air and torches were extinguished all at once.

From somewhere beyond the castle walls came a scream.

Then another.

Then dozens more.

The captain looked toward the city, his face turning ashen.

“Your Majesty…”

He swallowed hard.

“They’re no longer just wandering.”

Lucien’s voice was steady.

“What happened?”

The captain struggled to find the words.

“The dead…”

His breathing quickened.

“They’ve started remembering who killed them.”

The clash at Ashmoor Village ended as swiftly as it had begun. The surviving rebel soldiers fled into the surrounding forest, abandoning their weapons and horses in a desperate attempt to escape the Vampire King’s wrath. Smoke continued to rise from the burning homes, but the villagers had begun working together to contain the flames. Some carried buckets from the village well, while others searched the wreckage for survivors.Lucien sheathed the Sword of Night and surveyed the destruction around him. Several homes had been reduced to blackened ruins, and the village square was littered with broken carts and shattered market stalls. The victory brought him little satisfaction. His people had suffered because they had remained loyal to the crown, and he had arrived too late to prevent it.Nyx moved quietly through the village, kneeling beside the wounded regardless of whether they were human or vampire. She pressed her hand against a frightened child’s forehead, and the boy’s trembling

As the company prepared to leave the ruins of the Sunken Cathedral, Elaria stopped at the edge of the ancient stone bridge. The wind lifted her silver cloak as she looked toward the eastern horizon, where the first rays of dawn struggled through the gathering clouds.“This is where our paths separate,” she said quietly.Lucien frowned. “You’re leaving?”She nodded. “There are old sanctuaries hidden beyond the Frost Mountains. The barriers protecting them are beginning to fail. If they fall, more ancient creatures will escape into the world. I cannot ignore that.”Nyx stepped closer. “Will we meet again?”A gentle smile touched Elaria’s face. “The world is growing smaller with every crack in the Veil. Our paths will cross again when the time is right.”She looked at Lucien before adding, “Protect her, Your Majesty. The empire believes it needs a king, but before this war ends, it will discover how much it needs its queen.”Without another word, pale light gathered around her. Her figur

The ancient guardian remained silent after revealing that Nyx’s forgotten name was tied to the promise that had made her the Keeper of Death. No one pressed him for another answer. The look in his eyes made it clear that he had already said more than he believed he should. Even the old man beside him lowered his head, knowing that the trial had reached its natural end.A low rumble rolled beneath the cathedral, interrupting the heavy silence. This tremor was different from the ones they had felt before. The water covering the floor began flowing rapidly toward the eastern wall, while fine cracks spread across several towering pillars. Dust drifted from the ceiling, and distant echoes reverberated through the endless halls as though the entire structure had begun protesting against the passage of time. The old man looked around with growing concern. “The cathedral is becoming unstable,” he said. “The Hollow God’s influence has reached this place sooner than I feared. We no longer have

The silence that followed the guardian’s words settled over the cathedral like a heavy shroud. No one dared speak, not because they lacked questions, but because each of them understood that they had just come dangerously close to uncovering something that had been deliberately concealed for ages. The shattered fragments of the Mirror of Souls slowly dissolved into silver mist before sinking back into the water beneath their feet.Nyx remained where she stood, her silver eyes fixed on the empty space where the vision had disappeared. The memory had felt more real than anything she could remember from her endless existence. She could still hear the little girl’s laughter, still see the woman who had embraced her with such effortless love, and still feel the painful emptiness left behind when the memory was torn away. The certainty she had carried throughout eternity was beginning to crumble, replaced by questions that frightened even the immortal guardian of death.“You took it from me

The field of white flowers stretched endlessly beneath a sky unlike any the company had ever seen. There was no sun, no moon, and no stars, yet the landscape was bathed in a gentle silver light that seemed to come from the flowers themselves. A soft breeze swept across the field, carrying thousands of glowing petals into the air until they resembled drifting snow. The little girl wandered through the blossoms without fear, occasionally stopping to admire a flower before continuing her quiet journey. She hummed a melody so faint that it barely reached beyond the surface of the Mirror of Souls. There was an innocence in her movements that felt painfully out of place for someone who looked exactly like Nyx.Even Captain Roderic, who rarely understood the strange magic surrounding Nyx, found himself unable to look away. The child carried none of the solemn grace that defined the Queen of Death. She smiled freely, skipped across the field, and reached toward butterflies made entirely of si

Blood spread slowly across the young woman’s white dress until the bright crimson stain consumed nearly half the fabric. Her smile disappeared, replaced by an expression of quiet surprise rather than pain. She looked down at the wound for a brief moment before lifting her eyes to the young king standing before her.The Lucien inside the memory reached toward her instinctively, but she caught his hand before he could touch the wound. Even as her strength faded, she managed to smile at him with heartbreaking tenderness.“You promised,” she whispered. The memory-Lucien shook his head desperately.“No. Stay with me. The healers are coming.”She gently brushed her fingers against his cheek.“You’ve always been a terrible liar.”The scene struck the present Lucien with the force of a physical blow. His breathing became uneven as memories he had locked away centuries ago returned with painful clarity. He had buried them so deeply that even he had begun believing they no longer existed.Nyx w
