For a thousand years, the Night Empire has prospered under the rule of the feared Vampire King, Lucien Draven. To preserve the balance between life and death, every new king must perform the Crimson Vow during the Blood Eclipse, a sacred ritual meant to bind him to his destined Vampire Queen. But this time, the ritual goes terribly wrong. Instead of summoning a vampire bride, Lucien accidentally binds himself to Death herself, the immortal guardian who has guided every soul into the afterlife since the beginning of creation. Their impossible marriage shatters the natural order. Souls stop crossing into the afterlife. The dead refuse to stay buried. Ancient monsters imprisoned beyond the Veil begin to awaken, sensing that Death can no longer fulfill her duty. As vampire nobles plot to overthrow their mysterious new queen and kingdoms descend into chaos, Lucien discovers the woman beneath the legend. Death is not cold or cruel. She is lonely, compassionate, and exhausted by an eternity of watching every love story end. For the first time in existence, Death is forced to choose between duty and desire. If she remains Queen, the world may perish. If she leaves, she must take the soul of the man she has fallen in love with.

Chapter 1: The Bride Chosen by the Blood Eclipse

The bells of Blackthorn Castle rang thirteen times, their solemn echoes rolling across the vast Night Empire like an ancient warning. The haunting sound drifted through mist-covered forests, over jagged mountains, and across villages where sunlight had been nothing more than a forgotten legend for centuries. Every vampire, whether noble or commoner, knew exactly what the bells announced. The Blood Eclipse had arrived, and before the night ended, their king would stand beside the queen chosen by fate itself.

Thousands gathered within the castle’s grand ceremonial courtyard, where towering obsidian walls reached toward the crimson sky. Blue-flamed torches burned along every pathway, their ghostly light reflecting off polished black stone and countless suits of ceremonial armor. Above them, the full moon slowly disappeared behind a spreading crimson shadow, bathing the kingdom in an eerie red glow that seemed to stain the heavens themselves.

An unnatural silence settled over the crowd. Even the wind seemed to have abandoned the castle, as though nature itself understood the significance of this night. For more than a thousand years, every Vampire King had performed the Crimson Vow beneath the Blood Eclipse, allowing the ancient magic to summon the woman destined to become his queen. Never once had the ritual failed. It was older than the empire itself, older than the oldest vampire alive, and its judgment had never been questioned.

Standing at the center of the ritual platform was King Lucien Draven.

He looked every bit the ruler the empire had come to fear and respect. Tall and broad-shouldered, he wore ceremonial black armor engraved with crimson runes that shimmered faintly beneath the eclipse. A long velvet cloak flowed behind him, and the ancient crown of the Night Empire rested upon his dark hair with effortless authority. His striking crimson eyes remained fixed on the altar before him, revealing nothing of the thoughts hidden behind them.

The nobles watched him with a mixture of admiration and unease. Although he appeared no older than thirty-one, Lucien had ruled the Night Empire for over a thousand years. He had inherited the throne after avenging the murder of his father, defeating the ruthless warlord who had nearly plunged the empire into ruin. Since then, no enemy had dared invade vampire territory, and no rebellion had survived long enough to threaten his reign. His name alone inspired loyalty among his soldiers and terror among his enemies.

Yet despite all his victories, there was one duty he had postponed for centuries.

Tonight, that would change.

A graceful figure stepped onto the platform, her silver robes glimmering beneath the blood-red moon. High Priestess Selene bowed deeply before the king, her expression calm but solemn as she lifted her gaze to meet his.

“Your Majesty,” she said softly, “the Blood Eclipse has reached its peak. The ancient magic is ready.”

Lucien gave a single nod. “Begin.”

At once, twelve priestesses moved into position around the altar, each carrying a crystal bowl filled with glowing crimson liquid. Together, they formed a perfect circle and began chanting in a language so ancient that even the oldest scholars no longer understood its meaning. Their voices blended into a haunting melody that seemed to vibrate through the stone beneath everyone’s feet.

As the chant grew louder, the air itself began to change. The temperature dropped sharply, and every blue flame lining the courtyard flickered in perfect unison. The crimson liquid rose from each crystal bowl without being touched, floating gracefully through the air before gathering above the altar in swirling ribbons that resembled streams of liquid ruby.

No one moved.

No one dared breathe too loudly.

This was the moment when destiny revealed itself.

High Priestess Selene lifted an ancient dagger carved from black crystal and presented it to the king with both hands.

“The Crimson Vow requires the blood of the reigning king.”

Lucien accepted the dagger without hesitation. Drawing the blade across his palm, he allowed several drops of dark crimson blood to fall onto the center of the altar. The instant his blood touched the ancient stone, glowing runes burst to life beneath his feet, spreading across the platform like veins of molten fire. A brilliant crimson light shot toward the heavens, swallowing the castle courtyard in dazzling radiance.

The chanting intensified until it became almost unbearable. Above them, the Blood Eclipse consumed the last silver edge of the moon, plunging the world into complete darkness.

Then the light exploded.

A towering pillar of crimson energy rose from the altar, illuminating the entire kingdom. Gasps rippled through the crowd as the light slowly began to take shape, forming the silhouette of a woman descending from within the glowing column. Several nobles smiled with relief. Everything appeared to be unfolding exactly as history had promised.

Then the smiles disappeared.

A freezing chill swept across the courtyard with terrifying force. It was not the ordinary cold of winter, but something far older and far deeper, a cold that seemed capable of extinguishing life itself. One by one, the blue flames surrounding the ceremony died without warning until only the crimson pillar remained.

The chanting stopped.

Every priestess fell silent.

Even the wind refused to move.

High Priestess Selene stared at the glowing figure with widening eyes, and for the first time in centuries, genuine fear crossed her face.

“No…” she whispered.

The crimson light dissolved.

Standing upon the altar was a woman unlike anything the Night Empire had ever seen. She wore a flowing black gown that appeared to be woven from shadows themselves, while long silver hair cascaded down her back like strands of moonlight. Her pale skin seemed untouched by time, and when she slowly opened her eyes, they revealed an endless silver that held neither anger nor kindness, only an ancient sorrow so profound it silenced every soul present.

The moment her gaze swept across the courtyard, countless vampires instinctively stepped backward.

An elderly duke collapsed to his knees, his entire body trembling as though he had seen his own end.

“I know that face,” he stammered. “It… it cannot be.”

Whispers erupted among the nobles, each voice carrying more fear than the last.

“The forbidden scriptures…”

“Impossible…”

“She isn’t a vampire…”

Lucien remained where he stood, his expression unchanged even as an unfamiliar feeling settled deep within him.

For the first time in centuries…

The Vampire King felt uncertain.
