Lanver gritted his teeth, expecting her sharp teeth to plunge on his skin. However, just as she was about to do that, the door opened.
“Enough, Emery,” spoke a baritone voice.
Lanver sighed in relief when the woman let go of him. With furrowed brows, she turned to see who came. He did the same, curious who his savior was.
It was a man in a black coat and vest. He had black hair, a little longer than the usual, and the same amber eyes as the woman had. He also looked as fierce.
“Great timing, Lucius. As if I was trying to kill him.”
“Were you not?” Lanver couldn’t help but butt in.
The woman glared at him. If he heard the man named “Lucius” right, her name was Emery. It was a shame for her to have such a sweet name when she was anything but sweet.
“See? He is disrespectful, Lucius. He is better off a slave.”
“The council has confirmed it so we can’t do that. It’s really him.”
It’s really him? What did that mean? Lanver had never been so confused his whole life.
“But a taste won’t hurt.”
Of course, it would! Lanver wanted to shout at her.
“Let’s set aside other business for the meantime, Emery. The others are waiting to meet him.”
Lanver’s eyes narrowed. Waiting to meet him? Why did he feel like he has a special thing to do with them? He thought he was brought here to be fed to the thirsty vampire princess but now it seemed like he was brought here for another reason, which was far more important than the lady’s desire.
“Even if you are not humans, it’s still not right to just abduct anyone, don’t you think?” Lanver spoke that made the two look at him.
“I apologize for my sister’s aggressiveness, but we didn’t mean harm.”
Lanver scoffed. “You didn’t mean harm? She almost killed me. And if you really meant no harm, why was I forcibly brought here and tied like this? You are like a fucking syndicate.”
“You are talking to a prince. Have respect.” Emery glared at him.
Lucius tapped her shoulder as if saying it was alright.
“Stuart,” Lucius called. The door opened and a man with curly hair entered. He stopped a meter from Lucius’ back.
“Yes, Your Highness.”
“Untie our guest.”
Guest, huh? Lanver’s lips curved into an annoyed smirk. He didn’t know he was a guest because he didn’t feel like one.
The servant went to him immediately and untied him. He stood right after and moved his joints to see if all were perfectly fine after being tied so tightly on that position. So far, he was good.
“It was an urgent matter and our men were just being careful to not make a mistake that’s why they tied you up. My apologies,” Lucius said.
Lanver looked at the man’s physique. He was just as tall as him, and almost had the same build. If only he was human, there was no doubt he could take him down. He was a fighter, after all. A highly trained captain in one of the most elite special units in U.S. military.
But this was a different case, the creatures in front of him were not humans to begin with. Even if he was the best human fighter, he wouldn’t match what they were capable of. He would be lucky enough if he had special weapons to use, but at the moment he had none.
“Care to tell me what is going on? Because the last thing I remember I was sleeping in my condo.”
“I understand your confusion, but to cut it short, there is another world apart from what the human has, which is our world – Terra Lucien.”
Lanver brushed his fingers on his hair, one thing he usually does when frustrated. He was still having a hard time processing in his mind that vampires were real, and then there was this another revelation that seemed so out of the world.
“Oh please, tell me you’re just kidding.”
“Let me punch him once to knock some sense on him, Lucius,” Emery interrupted, eyeing him sharply as if she was ready to kill him.
Lanver shook his head. He had never liked violent women. If he would have a wife in the future, he wanted her to be soft inside and out. And this lady was the exact opposite.
“I am telling the truth. You are here in Terra Lucien, in our world,” Lucius continued.
“And you'd tell me what? That this is the world of vampires?”
“World of what’s considered as supernatural in human world, Lanver. Which means not only vampires exist in this world. There are other creatures living with us and we are trying to co-exist through treaties, laws, and kingdoms.”
“And guess what?” Emery spoke. “You don’t belong in human world. You belong here.”
“What was that supposed to mean? I’m not like you. I’m a human.”
“Says from a man whose wounds heal faster than ordinary humans.”
Lanver’s forehead creased. “How did you know that?”
Emery didn’t answer.
“I am hundred percent sure I’m not a vampire,” Lanver insisted.
Emery shook her head and said, “You talk to him, Lucius. I will be waiting with the others.” Then she left with a displeased face.
Lucius heaved and went to the window. Lanver followed him with his gaze.
“It’s hard to believe, I know. But this is true, Lanver. You were not born as a human. You weren’t supposed to be in their world in the first place. Twenty-eight years ago, my father’s right hand was the most well-known mage in his time, Lord Vincentius.”
Vincentius.
Back when Lanver’s mother was still alive, she had never told him anything about his father but his name. Vincentius, that's what she said. The same name she kept on mentioning on her deathbed. At that time, he felt like she wanted to tell him something else but she was having a hard time and all she could utter was his name.
“Have you ever wondered why you had never met your father? Or why you have no single relative you know? This is the answer.”
Lanver thought about it. His mother said she was orphaned and she lived alone until she met his father. She didn’t say anything about what life they had and how it ended. He wanted to know, but he felt like it was a part of his mother’s life he wasn’t allowed to touch. He also thought that maybe it was too painful for her so she chose to keep it to herself.
“And I know strange things happened to you.”
Lanver couldn’t speak. Because he knew that Lucius was right. Some strange things happened to him and he was trying to believe that it had nothing to do with him but right now, the puzzles of his life seemed to form something.
“Lord Vincentius fell in love with a mage princess from another kingdom and brought her here. They are your parents.”
“Mage princess?” Lanver scoffed. “My mom died in sickness. How could she die like that if she was someone powerful?”
Lucius remained calm. “And were you told by the human physicians what kind of sickness she had?”
Lanver fell silent.
“You weren’t, right? Because those people didn’t know. She wasn’t just sick, Lanver. She was cursed.”
“Cursed?”
“Yes, but years had passed and it is yet to be revealed who cursed her. No one knows but everyone believed that it was done by her own sister because of envy. Her sister wanted to marry Lord Vincentius but your mother ended up marrying him.”
How could someone kill her own sister just because of a man?
“Lord Vincentius and Princess Anna were together for a while. They were a perfect couple in the eyes of many. They were happy. Until Princess Anna gave birth to a boy. A blind boy.”
“A blind boy? What did you mean?” Lanver asked with confusion. He never remembered that he had problems physically.“You were born blind, Lanver. And the fact that you were the first born of the great mage and a princess was a big deal. For everyone in Terra Lucien, you were considered as a sign of death and destruction. Some said that you and your family were cursed. Rumors even had it that Lord Vincentius wasn’t as noble as he claimed to be and was practicing dark magic.”Lanver remained silent. Although the story was still unbelievable for him, a big part of him was saying that Lucius was telling nothing but the truth.“Princess Anna’s family was condemned by their people and someone tried to overthrow the king. Her father was enraged and sent men to kill the child as he valued his throne more than his own blood. That’s when Princess Anna thought that the best thing they should do was to take you away from this world and bring you to the land of humans. However, Lord Vincentius had
There were five of them. Lucius took a seat which made them six. Sitting at the head of the table was a man holding a wine glass, who must be the king given his position in the table. But he wasn't the king Lanver expected. He expected to see someone older, their father perhaps, but the king was a young man. Someone who looked just his age or probably a little older. On the right side of the king was the ill-mannered princess, on his left was Lucius. There were two other men and a lady who looked the youngest among them."It's nice to finally meet you, Lanver," the King said in a deep voice. He didn't know how to address him or if he should greet him back for the sake of courtesy, but at the end he just voiced out his thoughts."I couldn't say the same."Emery hissed. "Why are you so rude? Even if you were raised as a human, right now you are in our territory. Have respect for the King."The King tapped Emery's hand. "It's alright. He is not accustomed to our rules.""But Your Majesty
"If I could go back in time, I'd rather close my eyes to unsee everything. Because the pain I felt that moment scarred my soul. It has always remained in my mind, haunting me in my darkest nights."The young girl listened as the woman ran her fingers to the girl's hair while reading her favorite book. It wasn't a book supposed to be read to a child, but the young girl insisted. She had been curious what was her mother's favorite book all about. She had a brilliant mind and didn't want to limit her knowledge. After all, it was better for her to broaden her perspective in life so she could use it in the future."Do you agree with her, Mother? If you were in her shoes would you want the same?" the young girl asked, talking about the last part her mother had read. The woman smiled. "Yes, sweetheart. That's why if you see something bad you should do what I've always told you, understand?""I understand, Mother. If I see something bad, I will close my eyes so it won't remain in my heart.""
The delight in the King's eyes was evident. Lanver saw this and realized that Amadeus was a great king who wanted nothing but the best for his people. It was a shame the human world lacked great leaders like him. But then again, life was not fair. It has never been."But I have no idea how to do it," Lanver said."As soon as we can awaken your mage blood, then your training will not be that hard for you since you were a trained fighter who had been through a lot.""Awaken my mage blood?" Lanver was confused. He didn't know if he could ever be accustomed to the terms used in this world."Yes. Right now we can only feel your presence as a human. Princess Anna must have sealed it to hide you. However, your blood as a mage must be so strong that it could resist Princess Anna's spell, that's why there were times, as you've noticed, when something weird were happening to you.""Why would you know what was happening to me back there?""Let's just say we have the means to see what is happenin
Cold and shivering, I slumped to the ground with my head feeling dizzy. It was seven days since I left my pack, Moonraven, and ran to the vast outskirts of Seattle from Vancouver, scared that Benedict's men must be hunting me down. But I guess this is the farthest I could get with no money and food.I leaned on the tree and closed my eyes. The light from the horizon was starting to fade and I could barely see a faint light from where I was because of the tall trees surrounding me. Sure, it was a good place to die, somewhere peaceful and calm. But should I allow myself to just die like this after my parents sacrificed themselves for my freedom? Should I put their efforts into waste by giving up?I don't think I have the heart to do that. But I also don't know where I can get strength in the middle of wilderness.I can't help but ponder about some things. Too much trust and kindness were my father's weakness. He trusted Benedict and the people surrounding him too much that he was blinde
I've always felt the weird demeanor Benedict has all those years of him acting loyal to my father. He's handsome, quiet, I think the quietest man I've ever met, he's most of the time serious, and he never looked at any girl in our pack. He was either training the men or handling the pack's affairs.I didn't have casual conversations with him even though he was often invited to our house for dinners and parties. I'd always seen him in the town, and back when I was still studying, we went to the same school. I didn't give him much attention then, but I knew he was good at academics. Well, he's good at everything he does if my memory serves me right.Although his beta father died early, with his contributions, everyone believed that he was the only man worthy of my hand. They said we were perfect for each other. I couldn't disagree more. I had never pictured myself marrying Benedict Allen. I could stomach Tyler, his geek cousin who couldn't even throw a punch, but not him.Even though he
[Three months earlier...]She was destined to marry the King. Melrose had pinned that in her mind ever since she turned fifteen. Lord Lewis, her stepfather who had been her only family since the age of five, had never been tired of reminding her that. For a lady without a fetish for romance, it was the best the world could offer. The King was, after all, a young man with a pleasant character and outstanding physical attributes. He was crowned at the age of sixteen, and has been ruling the country for six years now. He was doubted by many at first as he was only a palace maid's son, but over the years he had gained the respect and trust of people.Melrose believed he was the best choice among the most eligible men in town. Not only because he was the most powerful and desired by most women, but because she had known him for years. She was sure he'd make a good husband. As Lord Lewis had always envisioned Melrose marrying the King one day, he raised her in the best way he could. Only th
The De Noir manor was situated at the southern part of Arden, near the woods and without any neighboring houses or small villages. The King offered Lord Knight to stay at the palace during his vacation but he refused the offer and told the King that he wanted a place where he could be at peace, and the palace, being the center of political affairs and eyes of many, wasn't a place inclined to the word "tranquility" for him.So the King, as generous as he was, sought for a solution and offered Lord Knight places where he could stay for the meantime, including the De Noir manor, a property owned by his late mother, Princess Celestine. Now that Lord Knight decided to stay in the manor, people were more cautious to not stay near the property for folks felt his domineering and dangerous presence as if he would eat anyone alive just by his look.Besides, the townspeople tend to avoid the said place just as much as how everyone avoided North Ridge, for they believed that the manor had dark en
