Brix stood there and looked down at me like I was just some pathetic crap in his way.

“W-What did you just say?” I asked, fists clenched.

He let out a heavy sigh and said, “I thought tears could blur your eyesight, not your eardrums. Uhm. I must be missing something here.”

I nodded.

I helped myself up, brushed off the dirt sticking to me, and faced Brix. His gaze was still serious. I wanted so badly to change that, to wipe the seriousness off his face.

“First Evan, and now Celeste...” He shook

“I have another mission after this,” said Brix. “I might leave tomorrow. Don’t do anything stupid again. Just follow what I told you. I know you know what I mean.”I turned to him and stared absentmindedly at his face.“What?” he asked.“You’re handsome, Brix.” That just slipped out.He looked confused. “Now you’re showing affection?”“You’ve always been handsome to me,” I said. “I’m not blind, you know?” I leaned in and he backed away. “You have fans ready to kill for you, eyes that pierce through boundaries, and the ability to make any woman lose her mind with just a touch—or believe they’ve kissed the greatest vampire ever. Truly, a beast.”“What the hell are you saying?” His cheeks turned red, probably from the alcohol. “You’re drunk. Are you done drinking?”“Handsome fool.” I laughed. “Handsome idiot. Damn it, Brixton Wenz Cardinal. You might even be more handsome than Oscar. Lord Severo’s handsome too. You kinda look alike.”Brix just shook his head and took another drink.“Eliy

You’ll keep hurting yourself if you continue like this.”“Why did you come back?” I asked instead. He simply shrugged.“You look like you just came back,” I said, eyeing his dirty clothes stained with blood. “Weren’t you supposed to report to Lord Severo? Come on, Brix. Lord Severo wants good news from his underdog.”His eyes narrowed at my words, but I didn’t show any sign of fear. I’d already been through the worst—ruining things

“This is one of the reasons I haven’t been around lately. It was a hard decision because Celeste has been great. She was no trouble. I’m thankful for that. But… I want something new this time.”“Hmm…” Lord Severo tapped his fingers on the table, thinking.“I don’t see any reason, but it’s your choice, son. You can get another whenever you want.”I looked at Celeste. Her head was down, her fists clenched.I turned my gaze to Oscar. Is that it? Just because he couldn’t figure things out, he’s letting her go? Is this how he always plays it safe? This is bullshit!“My plan is to swap her with someone else, Papa,” Oscar continued.“That’s my decision.”“Your choice, Oscar.”I lost my appetite entirely.“Once I find someone new, they can assist you, Lady Astra,” Oscar said to me.“I’ll make sure they’re skilled so you won’t have a hard time.”I swallowed. I wanted to express my resentment, but I still chose my words carefully.“I’m good, Master Oscar. I think Master Resty can teach me well.

“Astra? Is that you?”Shit, shit. It’s really Eliyah. My cousin.I tried to approach, but one of the three men quickly stopped me. I couldn’t do anything except stare at my cousin. His eyes were blindfolded, but I recognized him instantly.“Astra? Is that you?” he asked again.I swallowed and turned to the man holding my arm.“W-what’s this? What are you doing? Let him go.”He shook his head.“We can’t.”“Wait... Is this really a syndicate?” Eliyah asked again. “Shit. Are you part of a syndicate now, Astra? Is that why you suddenly got rich? I don’t understand.”“What violation?” I asked calmly.“We caught him hovering around,” the guard responded. “He might be a spy sent by another clan. We need to report him to Lord Wenson. He’ll take care of it.”“Astra? Do you know him?” Celeste asked.“If I were you, I’d stay out of this unless you want to get involved too,” the man threatened. “Take the man away so the trial can begin.”“I-I’ll come too,” I said seriously. “I don’t care if I get

I struggled to find the words. “I-it was honestly hard. It felt like I was taken to a place and lost. The trees I thought were still turned out to be moving, and the water I thought was drinkable was actually poison. Everything felt strange.”“Don’t you feel superior now that you're a vampire?”I looked at him, but his eyes remained fixed straight ahead.I looked away as well. “If I were given the choice between dying or becoming a vampire… I wouldn’t hesitate to choose death.”“I see. Do you blame Brix?”I bit my lower lip. I didn’t know where this conversation was heading—or why he even cared to know how I felt. But somehow... it felt good. It was comforting to know that someone actually cared.“I would kill him if I had the chance,” I said bluntly. He laughed at my answer. “It must be that frustrating to realize you don’t stand a chance against him, huh? No one has ever surpassed his abilities.”I didn’t respond. He was right. I couldn’t argue with that.“Do you know how to win a f

We stayed on that hill until the sun rose from the east. I didn’t ask Erikson any more questions, but he talked about Brix—the former Brixton Wenz Cardinal who used to be cheerful, friendly, and mischievous.I was shaking my head the whole time. I couldn’t imagine Brix ever being that way. Now that I think about it, I kind of want to see it too. I want to see the playful side of the devil.Just as we agreed, Erikson walked me back to the mansion. My heart was pounding so hard, I started to regret saying I wanted to live there. I think... I’d rather go back to that small house in the back, even if I had to live there alone.Mr. Billy and a few female servants greeted us at the entrance.“Good morning, Lady Astra,” Mr. Billy said with a smile. “Lord Severo has been expecting you. For now, Lady Ersa will help you get ready. After that, Lord Severo would like you to join him for breakfast.”A slender woman stepped forward—probably Lady Ersa. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lady Astra. I am
