“Chiara,” I acknowledge, my greeting filled with unspoken explanations.

“Anything to drink?”

“I’d love a glass of Pinot Grigio,” she requests, unperturbed.

"Chiara, please let me explain."

"Isn't it too late for unnecessary pleasantries and explanations? Last I checked, we aren't friends anymore."

"I'm deeply sorry. You know that was beyond my control."

“Please pack up my order. I won't be eating in here anymore."

"Okay," I respond as I sigh, not knowing how to go about it.
