Chapter 2

Author: Triple Threat
Eve gave me a long, hard look before pulling out another phone. The screen lit up.

The display read 9:43 AM.

She then flipped the camera around to point at the dressing room window.

The glaring sun hung high between endless blue sky and soft white clouds.

Eve’s stern voice ensued.

“It’s 9:43 AM on April 1st, 2026. My wedding starts in 17 minutes.

“Aisling, you’re my best friend. Are you seriously going to keep this up?”

With a solemn look, I approached the floor-to-ceiling window in my hotel room and pulled the curtains apart.

I aimed my phone at the night sky outside the window, letting every word sink in.

“Look. What time do you think it is here?”

The line went quiet.

Eve was stunned.

Beyond the window was pitch black, except for scattered lights flickering in the distance.

“T-That’s impossible.”

Eve gasped.

A cold scoff cut Eve off before she could say anything.

Hunter sneered at the camera.

“I told you so, Eve. Aisling can’t stand to see you happy.

“She even staged a fake background to stop our wedding from going ahead. What’s your game, Aisling? Are you trying to get in our heads, saying that you can’t attend the wedding because of some time warp?

“You make me sick!”

June, who was like a mother to me, pulled a scowl.

“Aisling, I’ve been nothing but nice to you. Whenever Eve brought up what you fancied having, I always had it ready for you.

“Today is Eve’s special day. She’s my only daughter. Please, can you end this nonsense for my sake? Just get down here now.”

My heart sank as June’s tender smile turned solemn on the screen.

Unlike Eve, I grew up in a single-parent household. My mother passed away when I was just a little girl.

In other words, I never experienced the love of a mother before I met Eve.

June filled the role of a mother in my life.

She was the first to call and get me my prescription when I fell sick.

When work drained me, June would always ship me a care package with my favorite things despite the distance between us.

I always had a place in her and Josh’s home.

Eve often said, “Aisling, Mom loves you like a daughter. We should be sisters forever.”

With Eve and June in mind, I knew better than to let the wedding run late.

Staring at the dark sky, I took a deep breath and clenched my fists.

“Eve, Mrs. Connell, I’ll be right there.”

On the other end of the line, the group let out a relieved smile.

“But—”

I paused before earnestly uttering, “I need one last confirmation.”

Hunter’s expression turned sour.

“Aisling—”

“Hunter!”

June cut him off, her voice tender but firm.

“Aisling is a good kid. Since she has doubts, I don’t see why she can’t verify the time once more. Though…”

June stared at me, dead serious.

“Aisling, this is the last time. The ceremony is starting in ten minutes. Don’t let me down.”

The call ended abruptly.

I looked at the dark screen, my heart pounding out of my chest.

This was my last chance, and the question was to whom I would call.

After thinking long and hard, I decided to call the one person who would never lie to me.

It was my father, Adam Port. He and Josh worked together, so he was on the guest list too.

Even if the Connells were lying to me, Adam never would.

With that in mind, I dialed Adam’s number.

“Hello?”

A deep, raspy voice came through the line. The person yawned, sounding like he had been dragged out of sleep.

Feeling assured, I asked eagerly, “Dad, what time is it there?”

On the other end of the line, Adam’s yawning came to an abrupt stop.

“Isn’t it midnight now? I just fell asleep when you rang. What happened?”

Adam grilled me in an anxious tone, with the rustling of sheets following after.

Right when Hunter and Jeremy hit rock bottom, the Connells struck unexpected fortune. Their long-time family home was bought out as part of a redevelopment project, earning them a payout worth millions.Greed took hold of Hunter, and he came up with a plan to seize the Connells’ assets. On the eve of the wedding, Eve stumbled upon debt collection texts and massive betting records on Hunter’s phone. Shaken to her core, Eve decided to call off the wedding. She texted me to come over, so I could be there while she confronted Hunter. It never occurred to her that Hunter had the poison ready in case anything went south. Seizing the opportunity, Hunter exploited the access his mother had through her job at the hotel and slipped poison into the hotel-provided food, murdering Eve and her entire family.Once the Connells were dead, Hunter, as the lawfully wedded husband with the marriage license acquired before the wedding, inherited the family assets and cleared his debt. As the on

Eve’s text to me read, “I’ve stumbled into a huge secret, Aisling! You must come to the ballroom now. It’s too huge, and I only trust you.” I looked and met Terry’s widened eyes. With a raspy voice, I explained, “I was drowsy from taking a heavy dose of painkillers when I got the message. I woke up in the early hours the following morning and saw the message. By the time I got to the ballroom, all I saw was a room… full of bodies. “I later got a call from someone claiming to be Eve, their voice altered by a voice changer. ‘Eve’ demanded to know why I let her die and why I didn’t save her… Shock, guilt, and regret all crashed over me, and I completely lost it.“Fast forward to today, when I escaped from the psychiatric ward and checked back into this hotel. Hunter was afraid I’d expose the truth he doesn’t know I already know, so he planned this entire wedding setup and used AI to clone Eve and her family’s voices and faces in a fake livestream. He wanted to push me over the edge

Terry’s face fell when he saw the state of me. At the time, I received a mysterious phone call, after which I completely broke down. I lost control in public, crying and shouting that I had killed Eve and tried to end my life, which got me checked into a psychiatric ward due to my mental state. Strangely, the police checked my phone and could not find any records of a call. With history bound to repeat itself, Terry took a step forward to snatch the phone out of my hand. Before his hand could reach mine, I jerked backward and picked my tear-stained face up before giving him an assuring look. I then spoke into the phone while the person on the other end tore into me, my voice barely above a whisper yet clear.“How long do you plan on keeping up with the act?” …Tension hung heavily in the air. The screaming on the other end came to an abrupt stop. Terry and the detectives behind him looked at me in shock and disbelief. Even Sophie, who had been making herself scarce

“However!” Terry inched closer. “When you arrived at the crime scene after hearing the news, you completely broke down. You even went so far as to try to slit your wrist with a piece of broken glass in front of everyone. Following a joint assessment by forensic psychiatrists and mental health experts, you were diagnosed with severe PTSD from the trauma. By law, you were placed in a psychiatric facility for compulsory treatment.“Just a few days ago, you attacked a nurse and escaped the psychiatric ward. Since then, you have disappeared without a trace.” Terry leaned in close to my face, his eyes reflecting suspicion and scrutiny as he grilled me. “Aisling, are you still insane?” … “Are you still insane?” The words struck me, echoing across the empty ballroom. My eyes darted from Terry to the white chalk lines on the floor. The horrific scene I had seen when I pushed open this door in my past life—or perhaps just a few days ago; I could no longer tell whether those memories

The leader of the squad was a man in his forties with a broad, chiseled face. He carried himself with a commanding presence, his eyes piercing. He was Terry Miles, the local deputy chief and the head of the special task force. After getting out of the car, Terry glanced at me before leading me, a discolored Sophie, and the entire squad to the ballroom at the back of the hotel. The yellow police tape remained criss-cross over the doors of the ballroom, looking rather eerie in the wee hours of 1:00 A.M. Before opening the door, Terry stopped, turned around, and stared intently at me. “Are you sure about this, Aisling? You’ll probably face more than the truth behind these doors. It could be your deepest, darkest fear. Are you ready for that?” I met his gaze without shying away before nodding solemnly. “I’m ready. By facing the fear, I can kill the one who creates it.” Sophie, standing next to me, could barely stay on her feet. My remark threw her off balance, and she nearl

“Aisling, it’s not too late if you hurry over now. Please!” The voice sounded exactly like Eve’s, and it felt like a knife cutting into me. I chuckled, my voice dripping with despair and bitter resentment. “Oh, really?” I asked, letting the words hang in the air. “Are you sure there’s still time? “Or better yet, are you sure… you’re still alive?” … “Ungh!” A sharp gasp came through the line, and the crying and music cut off all at once. The line went dead for two seconds. The call was then abruptly disconnected. I put away my phone as a deafening silence settled over the hotel lobby. The two police officers looked at me in shock and confusion while Sophie shuddered, her face pale. Dismissing the look on Sophie’s face, I turned to Cameron, my voice clear and firm. “I’m ready now. Take me to the precinct. “I have information to share in regard to the Connell family massacre that happened a few days ago.” The mention of the case hit the police and Sophie l
