Nora's POV

That was quite an altercation. The atmosphere in the company has never been this tense since I started working here. I knew Victor Sterling was a strict man, but I never imagined he would be that harsh with his own son, the heir to his multimillion-dollar company.

The brawl had everyone talking in every department. The whispers were so loud they could be heard from every corner of the building. Poor Adrian must be losing his mind up there.

I couldn't make out most of what was being said, but I think it was primarily business talk—and I also suspected it was about me. I knew I wasn't welcome here, and my confrontation with that arrogant woman, Vivienne, must have made things worse.

Victor had been gone for a while, but his presence sure did leave a mark. The murmurs had started to die down, but the weight of them still lingered. My desk, which was my safe space, now felt like a fishbowl under the scrutiny of my coworkers.

Somehow, the fight wasn't the only thing being talked about. My dance with Adrian was now a trending topic. It was bold of me to assume that whatever happened that night would not get leaked to the entire office.

I was now frantic. I kept my head down, my fingers flying over the keyboard like I actually had something urgent to finish. I was really just typing nonsense to keep myself busy.

Just then, a sharp ping interrupted my thoughts. It was an email.

Come to my office.

NOW.

– A.S.

This day could not get any worse.

I swallowed. I didn't know what to expect. Was he going to fire me? Was he going to talk about last night? Or were we going to have one of those weird moments again?

I pushed back my chair and stood. Every step to his office felt like balancing on a tightrope. I was pretty sure I was sweating. I tried to balance my dear with my anticipation.

When I entered, he was standing behind his desk, hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable as usual.

“Close the door,” he said, without looking back at me. I was hesitant but I obeyed.

“What was that stunt you pulled back there?” he asked, still standing behind his desk. I was not sure what he was talking about at this point, because I had been pulling most of these stunts frequently.

“Why were you up here when Victor was around? And why the hell are you quiet?”

My head was down and I was panicking. I immediately thought Victor was here because of me. What I said to Vivienne must've circulated and Victor wasn't having it. He probably came here to make Adrian fire me. This could mean the end of my job.

Just then, Adrian turned around and approached me. He placed his hand on my jaw and lifted my head up, not hard enough to make it violent and not slow enough to make it romantic.

“Answer me,” he said, now sternly, his green and fierce eyes peering aggressively into mine.

Immediately I was jolted back to reality, and I managed to force out a few words. “It was a mistake, Sir; it won't happen again. I promise. Just let me keep this job.”

“You know the circumstances with which you got this job. I expect you to be on your toes. Every step you take and every mistake you make won't go unnoticed by me, my father, and even your coworkers. Stay focused. Know your place. Do not come up here unless I summon you. Do you understand?”

“Yes”.

I responded, but he refused to let go of me.

“Yes sir”.

“Good”.

He finally let go of my chin and walked back to his desk.

I didn't know if I was to leave, because he didn't dismiss me, so I just stood there waiting for his next order.

“ You handled last night really well,” he said as if he wanted to ease the tension he knew he had just created. He finally looked at me, his gaze sharp, a faint smile forming across his perfectly shaped lips.

“I expected you to crumble after what Vivienne said.”

“I've dealt with worse.”

“So it seems”, He said as something I couldn't name flickered in his expression.

“Is that all?” I said as I crossed my arms

“No.” He said, gesturing to the seat across from him. I refused to move.

His lip twitched. “Sit down Nora.”

I reluctantly took my seat.

“There’s an upcoming business trip,” he said. “A three-day conference in Chicago. I need an assistant there.”

I frowned. “And?”

“You’re coming with me.”

I blinked. “I—what?”

“You heard me.”

I leaned forward. “Why? You have other assistants.”

He tilted his head slightly, as if amused. “Would you rather make me take Vivienne?”

I gritted my teeth. “She’s not your assistant.”

He smirked, and I hated the way my stomach twisted at the sight. “Exactly.”

I exhaled sharply. “Fine. What’s the agenda?”

“Meetings, dinners, networking events.” He leaned back. “And, of course, you’ll be expected to… keep up appearances.”

I narrowed my eyes. “What does that mean?”

He held my gaze. “It means you’ll be by my side. You’ll dress the part, act the part.”

I swallowed. “So, what? You expect me to be your—”

“—assistant,” he finished, but the glint in his eye suggested something more. “Get over yourself, Sinclair.”

Too late.

“I’ll have everything arranged,” he said, standing. “You can go now.”

I stood, but before I reached the door, he spoke again.

“Oh, and Nora?”

I turned around.

“Don’t make me regret choosing you.”

I lifted my chin. “That goes both ways, Sterling.”

His smirk deepened, and I walked out before I could overanalyze what it meant.

Adrian's POV The office was quiet, almost too quiet for a Thursday night. The kind of silence that made you feel like you were trespassing.I stood outside her office door longer than I should have, the light from her desk still pouring into the hallway. She was working late again. I told myself I was only passing by on my way to the elevators, that I wasn’t here to see her. But I hadn’t even pressed the button for the elevator. My feet had brought me here on their own.Nora Sinclair. She had no idea the kind of chaos her name was stirring beneath the surface. And I couldn’t tell her—not yet.I ran a hand through my hair and exhaled. She hadn’t believed my lie earlier. Not entirely. I could see it in her eyes—that wary, quiet disbelief. I had told her that Vivienne leaked sensitive documents about the Jasper Edge deal. That I had pulled out to stop the whole thing from crashing. Which was true. But only half of it. And hal

Nora's POV There was something about returning to New York after Chicago that made everything feel heavier.Maybe it was the cold air biting harder than usual or the gray skies that hadn't lifted since we landed. Or maybe it was Adrian. The silence between us was thicker now. He hadn’t said more than a few sentences since the night at the hotel. Not about the kiss, not about what it meant—if it meant anything. And God help me, I didn’t know which version would hurt more.I walked into Sterling Capital on Monday morning wearing a brave face. Lips red, coat pressed, heels clicking down marble floors like they belonged here. Like I belonged here. And maybe I did. But nothing felt the same.Adrian had been colder since we got back. Not cruel—but distant, mechanical. He gave me assignments, nodded when I handed in deliverables, and that was it. Not even a glance that lingered. I hated how my stomach still twisted every time he passed me by wi

The ReturnAdrian stared out of the tinted window of the private jet as the skyline of New York began to come into view. It had been a quiet flight back, almost too quiet. Nora was sitting across from him, her face angled toward the window, her lips pursed in concentration, her fingers tapping rhythmically on the armrest. She had been this way ever since they’d left Chicago, as if some invisible wall had gone up between them.He couldn’t blame her. What had happened between them during the trip had changed things. The chemistry that simmered underneath their professional exchanges had boiled over at times, and both of them had been left with more questions than answers.Adrian shifted in his seat, tugging at the collar of his shirt, his thoughts tangled in knots. He hadn’t wanted to care about her. He had never allowed himself to care about anyone, least of all a woman like Nora. She wasn’t part of his world—she was too far removed from everything he had ever known, too independent, t

The morning air in Chicago feels colder than it should be for late spring. It’s as if the city itself is holding its breath, waiting for something to break—waiting for her to break. She shivers as she walks toward the conference hall, trying to focus on the day ahead, but her mind keeps drifting back to the words Adrian said the night before, and the unspoken tension in his eyes when she turned away. She pulls herself together with a practiced professionalism, refusing to let him see how shaken she is. His presence—always so commanding, always so distant—feels suffocating today. They haven’t spoken much since their argument, and Nora is fine with that. She can feel him pulling back, just as she’s been trying to do. But the silence between them is heavy, and it lingers in a way that makes her stomach twist. As they sit in the conference hall, Adrian stays distant, his gaze fixed on his notes, his voice cold and clipped when he speaks. He’s still avoiding her, still keeping his emotions

Adrian hadn't moved.Long after Nora disappeared into the hotel, long after Vivienne smiled that slow, knowing smile, he remained on the terrace with the wind gnawing at his suit jacket and guilt buzzing behind his eyes. What the hell was she doing here?He had broken up with Vivienne Laurent in nearly a year. They haven't been intimate since his father’s birthday gala—where she’d arrived on Victor’s arm like she still belonged in Adrian’s life. That had been their arrangement, after all: she pleased his father, kept up appearances, and Adrian tolerated her presence for the sake of peace. Until he couldn't anymore. He’d ended things. Brutally. But Vivienne never really left. Not in Victor’s mind. And clearly not in hers.“You’re quiet,” Vivienne said, walking up beside him with a glass of wine she hadn’t been offered. “That’s new.”Adrian exhaled. “Why are you in Chicago?”“Business,” she said sweetly. “Laurent Cosmetics has a partnership proposal with a firm based here. The hotel room was too quiet.Nora opened her eyes slowly, her body stiff from sleep and something else—something heavier. The sheets were tangled around her legs, the scent of him still clinging to her skin. She reached across the bed instinctively to touch him, but her hand touched only cold linen.Empty.Her heart sank. She sat up slowly, gathering the comforter around her chest as if it could shield her from the aftermath. The curtains were open. Sunlight poured in, pale and sharp, like a spotlight on everything they’d tried to forget last night. Her clothes were still scattered across the floor. She remembered the way he’d looked at her, the way his hands trembled just before they steadied themselves against her hips. She remembered how desperately he’d kissed her—like he was trying to silence something in himself. She thought it meant something.Maybe it had. Maybe that was the problem. She found her dress and slipped it on quietly. Her heels were by the door. His suit jacket st
