Chapter 4

Penulis: Alyssa J
The man in the black leather armor's face clearly flushed red.

Just as he was about to speak, Lia, who had just finished resetting her own bones, rushed over and kicked him straight into the cave ceiling with such force that he got temporarily embedded in the rock.

Then, the little wolf cub turned to me, nuzzling my face with her wet nose. Her golden vertical eyes looked at me pleadingly, "Mommy, Lia's hungry. Need food."

Who could resist that?

I immediately started searching through the cave, squinting carefully to identify the stored food, and excitedly went to prepare dinner for Lia—and for my "husband" hanging from the ceiling.

My cooking skills are no joke.

After I'd stewed a thick pot of soup with the wild pork, tubers, and herbs I found, the father and daughter pair licked the stone pot clean, not a drop of broth left.

When I went to the back of the cave to wash at the water pool, I could overhear their "harmonious" conversation:

"Lia, keeping this woman might not be such a bad idea. She cooks really well."

"But Daddy, tomorrow those corpse witch twins will be back. They'll get mad if they find out we didn't eat their food."

"Call that food? If they've got a problem with it, I'll take care of them first."

"Okay, I'll keep watch."

After washing up, I naturally claimed the deepest, softest pile of hay in the cave—clearly the master bedroom. I peeked out from the fur blanket, watching the dark figure still sitting motionless on the stone bench.

So, I used the sweetest, most considerate voice to show off my wifely skills:

"Dear, do you need me to help you clean your wolf? It looks like you've just been hunting."

I pointed to where I'd been cooking, where there was a large pool of water.

To my surprise, the man actually agreed. He silently walked to the side of the pool and sat down, shifting into his wolf form.

Those watching the trial went wild again:

【What the hell is she talking about?! Offering to clean a vampire-werewolf?!】

【Has this woman been kicked in the head by a rogue?】

【The vampire-wolf's fangs are longer than her thigh!】

【There's blood dripping from its mouth! And chunks of some unknown creature on its teeth!】

Facing the ferocious wolf with terrifying vampire fangs, I felt no fear at all.

In my eyes, he was just a big, fluffy dog.

I happily scooped up warm water and started washing the blood-splattered wolf.

"You know," I said as I worked through the tangled fur, "in my old pack, only family members help clean each other's wolves. It means we're close."

As I gently wet his fur, I unconsciously increased the pressure of my strokes.

I could feel the wolf under my hands tremble slightly, but he didn't resist.

Lia came over, resting her head on my lap. "The other trial runners see his fangs and run," she whispered. "Why aren't you afraid of us?"

I gently scratched her chin, thinking for a moment. "Because we're family now. What's there to be afraid of between family?"

Lia's voice turned low. "We're not what you think we are. What if we're monsters?"

"As long as you don't do anything to hurt me, you're my family. So what if you're monsters? My old pack wasn't monsters, but they abandoned me. You, at least, have given me a home for now."

I started scrubbing his fur, like washing a soft, black blanket.

【She's washing the vampire-werewolf's mane! He hates it when anyone touches his wolf! The last trial candidate who just brushed up against him lost all his teeth and fingers and was thrown into the crocodile pond in the rainforest!】

【What's wrong with this woman? She's even humming! Is she really not afraid at all?】

【That vampire-werewolf is actually closing his eyes in comfort? Can her massage skills be that good?】

"You're in a good mood?" The wolf under my hands spoke.

I finished washing and found a large, dry leaf. As I dried the remaining water from his fur, I said, "This is the first time I've ever had a family. I'm an orphan, and now I have a lovely daughter like Lia and such a strong mate. I'm so happy."

I could've sworn the wolf's temperature rose, like he was getting shy.

After I finished drying the wolf, I leaned my entire body against his smooth, fluffy fur, my voice muffled, "I still don't know your name."

He seemed to think of something unpleasant and quickly shifted back to his tall human form.

"The Werewolf Council stripped me of my name, declaring me a cursed being."

He paused, then added, "Maybe you could give me one. A name that belongs only to you."

After speaking, he turned and left in a huff.

Looking at his retreating figure and his words, I felt a little shy myself.

"Eros," I said. "That's the name I've chosen for you."

"Do as you wish." He was already far away, but I still heard his consenting reply.

By the first night, I was a little hopeful that Eros would sleep with me in the same hay pile. After all, he hadn't refused my request to join this home.

Plus, I kind of missed that the feeling of his strong muscle.

But I miscalculated. By midnight, he still hadn't shown up.

But Lia came. Her small body suddenly appeared in my bedding, her eyes glowing with an eerie light.

A true ghost wolf cub.

Her cold arms wrapped around me. "Mommy, will you wash me like that too?"

"Of course," I hugged her, trying to warm her little body. "Not only will I wash you, but I'll make you pretty little clothes. Dress up our little Lia."

Lia looked at me, puzzled. "Why dress me up?"

"Because our Lia is the most beautiful and lovely little wolf cub, of course?" I answered gently.

"But... when I was alive, people called me a monster. And that vampire... he's a monster too. His wolf could swallow a whole werewolf in one bite."

The pain I expected never came.A large hand, faster than lightning, clamped around the blade of the dagger. It was Eros. Where the silver met his palm, it hissed, wisps of smoke rising, and the immediate smell of burning flesh filled the air.But his grip was so tight that blood seeped through his fingers, dripping onto my tunic like a blooming red flower. There was no accusation in his eyes, only endless pain and an almost shattered resolve."No, Serina," his voice was strained with pain, yet it held an undeniable strength. "The choice belongs to us."Almost as the words left his lips, Lia, Morgan, and Morgana exchanged a single look. An unspoken understanding passed between them. In that look was sacrifice, a release, and the ultimate interpretation of the word "family.""For Mommy!" Lia screamed, her small body unleashing a final burst of energy as she threw herself toward a sharp rock, aiming straight for her own heart."Live, little lamb." / "Carry our share and live well." Eros didn't kill Safia and Thaine right away.He strode toward them, his movements a dark shadow tearing through space. The sound of their bones snapping was crisp and chilling under the crimson moonlight. He used no fancy abilities, only the most primal strength. He twisted their limbs clean and sharp, ensuring they were completely stripped of the ability to fight back, but without immediately killing them.Pained screams echoed through the rainforest, but Eros's expression didn't change in the slightest. He picked up their limp bodies as if discarding two bags of trash and carried them deep into the rainforest, toward a foul-smelling, venomous snake's lair that reeked of decay and blood. There, coiled within, were Moon-Cursed Thorn Vipers. Their venom delivered excruciating pain, but it wasn't instantly fatal. He threw them in. The screams were cut short, replaced by the wet, slithering sounds of something being devoured and muffled hisses. Then, he turned and walked toward me. The g

On the evening of the sixth day of the trial, the blood moon's glow painted the rainforest a deep crimson. I caressed the hardened scale I'd just gotten from the 15th nest, smelling faintly of sulfur. It was my ninth token.Just one more step. As long as I returned to the King's Nest and received the tokens from Eros and the others, I could pass the second stage.Just as I was about to return to the King's Nest, that place I called home, a cold mechanical voice tore through the silence:【Initial candidates: 100. current survivors: 3.】Only three were left now. Besides me... a cold premonition seized my throat."Well, look what we have here. Our little "sense-impaired" waste product." a voice dripping with scorn came from the shadows ahead.Safia and Thaine stepped out into the open, like predators patrolling their territory. The fake gentleness from before was gone, replaced by naked arrogance and disdain.Thaine sized me up from head to toe, his gaze assessing me like a piece of merch

The days that followed, I stuck to my own pace. Each day, after collecting three tokens, I would turn back and not linger in the lower nests.I knew that every being here—those souls cast out by their packs, betrayed by their kin, and abandoned by fate—carried a heavy burden. Just like those Omega siblings sacrificed by their father, the young half-breed werewolf driven to suicide, and the healer falsely accused and losing her child... they all had heartbreaking stories.I listened and offered what comfort I could in my own way, then left with their tokens.Because I knew clearly that at the very top, in the "King's Nest" that all other trial candidates feared, my real family was waiting for me.Every day, when I stepped into the entrance of the 100th nest looking slightly weary, the first one to greet me was always Lia."Mommy!"She was like a silver-white cannonball, icy to the touch but bursting with joy, and she threw herself into my arms. Her little head rubbed insistently against

The four most powerful beings in the Grayhall Manor trial—my family—accompanied me all the way out, reluctantly seeing me off to... the spiraling stone staircase leading down to the lower nests.I was clutching a pile of "little gifts" they had stuffed into my arms, so moved I was almost on the verge of tears.Who said this blood moon trial was full of twists and terror? Weren't these my most intimate, most adorable family members? The werewolf audience watching through their mental screens scrolled through their comments with obvious envy:【If someone gave me that vampire-werewolf's primal fang, I'd think they were the most benevolent beings too.】【You have to admit, Serina has her own way of doing things. At the very least, she's survived in the King's Nest this long and has earned the affection of those powerful beings.】【That's right. Previous trial candidates couldn't even touch the stone gate of the King's Nest before being torn apart by 'Bloodclaw' Lia.】【I bet with these four a

The discussion among those watching the trial immediately heated up:【The token collection phase is finally here! This is the most dangerous part!】【The entire group got wiped out in this phase during the last trial. Those lone wolves will never give up their tokens easily!】【How will Serina collect tokens? She can't even fight, can she?】Just then, my communication crystal flickered to life. It was a message from Safiya:【Serina, congratulations on surviving the first three days safely. Things are getting serious now, we need to help each other. I've contacted several survivors and we've decided to share information. There are a few relatively safe caves near your King's Nest. Perhaps we could cooperate?】Her tone was still gentle and concerned, but I noticed she was subtly probing:【By the way, I've always been curious how you survived in the King's Nest. Your "family"... are they easy to get along with? Any advice you could share?】I narrowed my eyes, carefully reading the words on
