“You're late,” he repeats, eyes narrowing at the dark figure frozen at the entrance. The lights remained off, obscuring her face. He was seated at the far end of the room, watching her closely.

His stepmother had said she was sending someone over, to await him at his quarter. He arrived at the mansion earlier than expected, and found no one.

Arrow was the only one among his brothers who often visited the mansion. The others disliked the idea, but he insisted on it.

After all, he finally had a sister, and he adored Lauren, spoiling her silly. Even if she was from another mother, It didn't matter. Why not?

They had always given him special treatment anytime he visited the mansion. It was solely for the purpose of relaxation and taking a good break from his hectic work.

“I'm….I'm so..sorry for coming late, sir,” Lorna stuttered, her voice quivering. She looked terrified.

Was she doomed? What would happen to her if he were to report to her mistress?

“One thing I hate,” he said coldly. “is tardiness. Get inside and lock the door.”

Arrow turned on the light with a firm tap. The sudden brightness stung her eyes, His deep voice sent chills down her body.

He was exhausted from his trip. As an Independent man on his own, he’d already handled his needs himself. Waiting on a maid for assistance made him feel dependent, and he hated that.

Trembling, Lorna obeyed. She turned and locked the door. Then slowly, she took one step at a time away from the shadows.

Each step she took revealed more of her as she moved towards where he stood, her figure gradually came into the light. Arrow went still.

He gazed at her, momentarily speechless.

She was beautiful. Petite, with wise eyes that gave away her fear but yet, strikingly stunning. Her beauty left him mesmerized, stealing the words from his mouth.

“You’re new?” It was the first question Arrow found himself asking. Though the words came out slower than usual.

Amongst other maids around the mansion, no one had caught his attention this way. But her? He was already finding it difficult not to stare.

“No..no, sir,” she responded. A feeling of uneasiness settled inside her as she shifted uncomfortably under his gaze.

She had never encountered a man this intimidating. He was so tall that she barely reached his chest.

“Why're you late?” he asked, again. Knowing his stepmom, she was not one to tolerate tardiness from her workers too.

“I..I..I had gone to change my dress, it got dirty earlier, sir.” she stammered out, fiddling with her fingers.

Why was he asking such questions? Was he going to report this to her mistress?

Lorna felt she was in deep trouble already. One wrong word from her, it might provoke the handsome stranger in front of her. She had not made eye contact with him from the moment she stepped in.

“Come closer.” He instructed her, motioning with a slight curl of his finger.

Her legs moved hesitatingly, each step slow until she stood right in front of him.

“What's your name?” Arrow asked. He couldn't deny it, he was intrigued.

For the first time, he was interested in a woman at first sight. Yes, he had met different women across the country, during business trips, special occasions. But he was rarely interested in them.

“ L..Lorna, sir.” It came out almost like a wince, avoiding eye contact with him. Arrow's lips curved into a small smile. What a unique and enchanting name.

Lorna's head was filled with multiple thoughts but she dared not to speak up.

Why would a man of his kind care about a lowly maid like her?

He was definitely making inquiries about these details to file a complaint against her.

Because why would this man be interested in anything concerning a filthy maid like her?

His eyes remained glued to her face making her nervous. Squinting, Arrow noticed the outline of fingers that stood out in angry red, on her face.

He felt a rush of emotions inside him.

What was it? Protectiveness? Possessiveness? He couldn't tell. All he knew was that, in that moment, something inside him sparked to life.

Why was he so angry because she was hurt?

She was only a maid, why was he bothered so much?

it was bound to happen, right?

Yet something flared inside him, fierce, dangerous…..He hated that he cared, why? he felt this sudden need to protect her. He couldn't explain what he felt, but it was there, deep and irresistible.

“Who did this to you?” His voice was low, demanding.

With a swift movement, he pulled her closer to him. His hand gently turned her face to the side for a better view.

Their eyes, finally met. He was staring deep into her soul as if there was something hidden inside those eyes, filled with fear and uncertainty. All she saw was sincerity in his, and she had felt safe at that moment.

Her body stiffened against his touch, but beneath the tension, something else unfamiliar stirred. She felt his warmth, from his touch.

His scent enveloped her, a subtle mix of vanilla and citrus drifted from him, stirring something forbidden inside her. Something she tried to suppress.

No one had ever been this gentle with her.

She blinked rapidly, speechless.

Her heart pounded inside her chest as she struggled to maintain her composure.

What was this feeling?

It wasn't just his words, it was his actions, his touch, the way he looked at her.

His presence made her feel exposed and vulnerable.

Telling him it was his mother’s fingerprints on her face felt wrong, she needed to be careful with her words.

“Do not lie to me.” Arrow said, his voice hardened, his eyes daring her to speak the truth.

What was he doing? He shouldn't feel like this.

Stunned, Lorna swallowed, she finally gave in.

“Lorna…” Lady Stella repeated, uttering the name slowly, as if measuring its weight. “Get her for me.” The words fell softly, yet with a gravity the maid didn't miss. She lowered her head in a slight bow, a smile tugged at her lips, before leaving the study. Lady Stella remained still, her gaze grew aloof, her thoughts whirling. Why had Arrow taken such a strange interest in a maid? She recalled sending Lorna to serve him on the night of his arrival, dismissing the details as irrelevant at the time. But now– Was it because she was that maid? A knock on the door snapped Lady Stella from her thoughts. She drew in a deep breath before uttering a low, “come in.” The door squealed open, and Lorna stepped inside, her movements careful. She shut it quietly behind her, the soft click echoing louder than it should have in the room. Then with cautious steps, she approached the desk–Lady Stella’s gaze fixed on her, unwavering, assessing. “You sent for me, my Lady,” Lorna spoke f

The faint scent of orchids lingered in the air, curling around the quiet of the study. It was a spacious room, lined on both sides with towering bookshelves and neat filing cabinets. A large oakwood desk stood at its heart– Satin-smooth, the kind only given to furniture that commanded respect. Behind it, Lady Stella's lips curved into a knowing smile as she set down the receiver, ending a two-hour phone call with someone she knew all too well. Her mind drifted to Arrow–he’d been staying in the mansion longer than usual. Whatever the reason, it felt like the perfect chance to advance her plans. Still, she was bothered by the mystery behind his prolonged visit. He was a busy businessman–of course, he had holidays and breaks but never at this particular time of the year. “Mother.” Almost as if pulled straight from her thoughts, Arrow stood at her desk. His worried gaze scanned her face, in search of something she couldn't name. “Arrow.” Her eyes gleamed. “ What brings

Lorna?!” Lauren's mouth dropped open, stunned to see a nervous Lorna standing there. She glanced back and forth between her brother and the maid, trying to connect the dots. “Please don't tell Mom, I'd do anything–just don't tell mom about us.” Arrow moved in front of Lorna, protectively. Lorna's gaze lingered on his broad figure in front of her, blocking her from view. Her pulse still racing from the moment she'd slipped out of the closet. Lauren blinked, speechless. When did her brother start acting like this? Desperate? Protective? “Us?” she murmured back, her brows rising. “You just got here–how are you professing love to a maid in such a short period of time?!” She barely gave him a chance to respond before shifting her attention abruptly to Lorna. “And you, Lorna…seriously?! I didn't expect this from you. Feelings? for him? All of a sudden?” Lorna lowered her head, avoiding Lauren's gaze in shame. Arrow's frown deepened, noticing her demeanor. “Hey, don't sco

Arrow let out a low, frustrated groan as the knocking continued. Meanwhile, Lorna rushed to pull her nightdress back on, panic and fear written all over her face. “What do we do?!” Lorna whisper-yelled, panting in panic, gripping her nightdress as the knocking persisted. Arrow stayed eerily calm, his gaze fixed on the door–thier only exit. But she couldn't go out through the door, not like this, not at the moment. “Arrow?” The voice came from behind the door, startling both him and Lorna who was on the verge of a breakdown. Lauren? It was Lauren at the door. By this hour? Arrow blinked, confused. Everyone was supposed to be asleep by now. This is what you get for sneaking around. “The closet. Go hide in there until she's gone.” He whispered, his voice lower than ever. “What if she comes in there?!” Lorna hissed, mentally preparing herself for the disaster about to unfold. What would happen if she was caught? Arrow let out a breath, running his fingers thr

He had called for her–again. Lorna walked quietly through the corridors, her breathing unsteady, excitement bubbling beneath her chest. Each step pulled her towards the one place she would've gladly avoided–and yet here she was, heading straight for him. Arrow's quarters. Lady Stella had come by for a brief meeting the other day, acknowledging chef Katherina–as usual–and pointing out a few tiny mistakes she had noticed at the dining table. Of course, she was never satisfied even when things were near perfect. There was always something–one flaw or the other–to correct. Lorna, however, was quietly thankful. Lady Stella hadn't noticed her son's steady attention during the meal. That would’ve been a different story entirely–one that wouldn't have ended after dinner. Why had she answered him? The mansion was quiet, lamps dimmed, doors shut– it was late enough that everyone was already in bed, the perfect hour for sneaking around the mansion, unnoticed. Safe to s

Lorna's Pov; We were on standby, waiting to be called into the dining hall to serve dinner, and I can't lie—I'm so nervous that my hands have been trembling for the past ten minutes. I've been taking deep breaths over and over again, trying to calm myself. From where I stood, I could hear Lady Stella's laughter blending with Sir Arrow's.It was strangely pleasing to the ears, echoing lightly through the house. A wave of anxiety washed through me. My thoughts were scattered. What if I embarrassed myself in front of him? What if I ruined everything? “Lorna, you'll be in charge of serving the drinks. Don't worry about the dishes–I'll handle that,” came the soothing voice of Head Chef Katherina, her tone warm and reassuring. I gave her a small smile, even though it does not change the fact that I was already panicking within me. “Start serving dinner, Katherina.” Lady Stella’s voice rang out from the dining room. Finally, Chef Katherina took the lead and I followed beh
