LOGINCyrus motioned me to stay while the pack was ordered to leave; Ghost was too volatile. The guy looked angry, freaked out, and confused—all at once. As one of the pack VPs, I reclaimed my seat at the bar to check in with my beauty. Cyrus was protective of the girl, we all are, but he mostly wanted me to do damage control. A mass exodus of a large group looks odd.
“How come you get to stay, Magnus?” Her bright eyes were filled with curiosity. She couldn’t quite understand our pack dynamics.
“Lucky, I guess. I’ll have a bourbon on the rocks, Princess.” She always smiled when I called her that. Her raven hair and icy blue eyes made her look ethereal, as if descended from the Romanoffs. There was something special about my girl, and everyone in the pack felt it.
I had staked my claim as soon as I set eyes on Esmerelda Cooper. Her beauty was only eclipsed by her kind nature. She had a bright smile and acted like she was fortunate to be alive, making serving drinks look virtuous.
My brothers in the Motorcycle Club took her friendly nature as a genuine interest. For the last month, they tried to secure a date, only to be shut down by her Uncle Harris. He was as protective as I was. We were silent partners in keeping Esmerelda away from the pack playboys. My noble actions were completely selfish. I was instantly in love with her, and my wolf agreed.
Ghost’s actions tonight were distressing. My heart was in torment when he found his true mate in Esmerelda. The Fates are honest but cruel. As a human, she could reject him. The magic of the mating bond was unbalanced unless you had enhanced blood—a shred of hope to me.
“Is there something going on tonight that you aren’t invited to?”
“I’d rather spend time with you, pretty girl.”
“I’d rather spend time with her, too. How about your number?” One of the locals was brave now that he was drunk, and most MCs were gone.
“Take a hike, Brent. She’s too good for the likes of you.”
“Magnus, I…”
“Esmerelda!” Harris always interveined when any of us had too long of a conversation with her. “You can refill the ice chest if you have nothing to do.” She rolled her eyes, making me chuckle. She lifted the bucket from the bin and went through the back door.
Only a handful of regulars were left at this time of the night. Besides the redneck townies, the MCs and University students were the only other groups that came down Route 7 for a drink. Students wouldn’t be back on campus until next weekend. The summer holiday was a nice reprieve from them.
I finished my drink, so she would have to serve me again. Harris knew my game and never bothered with me anymore. A few minutes of her absence turned into five, making me head for the back door. Dumping a bin of water shouldn’t have taken this long.
A low snarl rumbled through my chest at the sight. A dirty hand covered Esmerelda’s mouth, keeping her hostage while two young, burly men were whispering in her ear. Her eyes were wide with fright, almost making my wolf burst through.
“You two have a death wish?”
“Leave us alone, dude. She’s ours.”
“Wrong. She’s mine.” I growled. My body coiled and sprang, dislodging both idiots at once. Esme stood stock still as the men rolled around the ground, clenching their abdomens. I picked the bigger one up first and smacked him around until he begged for his life. He collapsed in a heap while I worked over the other one. They were big, but I was bigger. They were dumb and slow; I was not. As the enforcer for my club and pack, I was second in strength and skill only to our Alpha.
“Come on, Seb.” The smaller one spoke through his missing teeth. They crawled away, barely able to climb into their truck.
“You come here again or touch this girl; your life is over. Understand?” The cowards peeled out of the parking lot, unable to drive in a straight line.
“Magnus.” Her soft voice dispelled my rage.
“Princess.” I cupped her cheek as my thumbs wiped her tears. “You okay?” She nodded unconvincingly. “Do you know who they are?” She shook her head, hesitating, before reaching for me. My thick arms wrapped around her thin body. She relaxed into me immediately. I breathed in her scent, committing it to memory. After tonight, Ghost would try to kill me if her scent were on me.
Our tight friendship was void when there was a bond. I made the mistake last summer helping our Alpha’s mate, Jane, put up decorations for his surprise party when he became a partner in the law firm. Lifting her was enough for Cyrus to challenge me. His dominant wolf burst through inside our common room, and the party was ruined.
Emerelda shivered in the hot night air in shock from the trauma. “You’re okay now. Don’t go out here alone. I’ll tell Harris…”
“Please don’t tell Uncle Harris, Magnus. He won’t let me work here.” She purred in my chest, making my spine tingle. I was devoted to her and would blindly do anything she asked.
“That might not be a bad thing.” Keeping her safe was my priority.
“I need the money. I have to pay for school.” Fuck.
“You go up and take a nice, long, hot shower. I’ll tell Harris you got tired.”
“No! You can’t tell him that, either. He’ll think I’m having an episode. He almost sent me back with the last one!” Episode?
“What’s going on?” Harris startled us, and we flew apart. The loss I felt was severe.
“I tripped. We need a light out here.” She stepped away and picked up the bin. “Thank you, Magnus. I appreciate your help.”
“Anytime, Princess.”
Harris glared at me and followed her in. My vexation began to spiral. I had touched her skin and tasted her scent. I yearned for Esmerelda to be mine. The Fates chose Ghost, my friend, my brother. This would be the greatest trial of my life.
Esmerelda was in a private room hooked up to countless machines. We stood outside looking through the large picture window, watching the doctors collaborate. The Colonel stormed down the corridor, looking lethal. “Magnus, you’re with me.” I followed him, squeezing Neave so as not to take his abruptness and her dismissal personally. We listened to the doctors’ evaluation. They were human doctors and couldn’t account for her symptoms beyond exhaustion. They would return when the tests were back from the lab. The door closed, and the Colonel gripped me in a hug. “Son. Thank you.” His tears broke mine. We stood embraced in solidarity and grief. A Colonel and an Alpha never show this amount of emotion. This was getting grave. “Any news on Ghost?”“The car was found overturned near an old mine shaft. Esmerelda’s storm probably did the damage. The mine is being searched.” He paused. “How did she contact you?”“She sent me a vision. I saw her storm on the TV. My mate delivered the babies.”“
“There.” Neave pointed to the abandoned campsite. Ghost’s surveying and geological equipment were smashed or torn to pieces. “Holy hell. This is a lot of power.”“I had to talk her out of decapitating every hunter…”“Are we safe?” I avoided answering. I would never lie to Neave. She ignored my non-answer and pointed to a cave. “I would hide in there.”The mouth of the cave was only a few hundred yards away. Short distance for an SUV. A long walk for a pregnant woman. As soon as we parked, Neave hopped out and grabbed her gear. “Bring blankets, water, and the bag of clothes I packed.” She was a doctor first.Screams from the cave made us sprint. Esmerelda was on all fours, clenching her belly. Gale-force winds knocked us about as she cried.“Princess!” The wind died instantly as my voice reverberated against the cave walls. “It’s Magnus. We are here.”“Ghost! Where’s Ghost!” She yelled frantically, searching my face. “Find him. Please, Magnus.” My beautiful girl was covered in dirt and
Neave was cooking dinner in our tiny base apartment. I swiped a few of the red peppers to snack on as she batted my hand away, giving me an opportunity to kiss her. This was our routine most nights. My life was almost perfect. I had found my mate.About five months ago, the Colonel introduced me to the Israeli beauty at a function welcoming the new brass and civilian employees to the base. The air shifted, and the uncontrollable urge to fight every male there prompted the Colonel to evacuate the room. My wolf claimed Dr. Kohen the same night. There is a non-atmospheric storm over Pike County in Kentucky. We have monitored several of these uncharted storms this year, but this one is the largest… The Weather Channel report caught my attention. Non-atmospheric meant witchy.Under the watchful eye of my mate, I called the Colonel, knowing he was in D.C. “Fuck, his phone went to voicemail.”“What’s wrong?” Neave missed nothing. She was by my side before I collapsed. My mind filled with a
As Esmerelda’s belly grew, we took small working trips with Gunnar. I needed him trained enough to take over when the babies were born. Unless her father was visiting, she never wanted us apart. Since her months away as a wolf, her dependency on me has been transparent. The security as a mate, husband, and father-to-be still didn’t alleviate the fear of being alone. I think she didn’t trust her wolf anymore. They would be estranged for another few months, at least until after the babies were born.Esmerelda’s physical health remained healthy throughout the pregnancy. Her mental health was being challenged daily. Her belly was enormous, making her clumsy and constantly hungry. She worried about where I was at all times.Witchy skills had gone dormant while her wolf was forced to slumber. Esme was acting like she was waiting for a catastrophe to happen.“Gunnar and I want to take one more trip. A parcel of land in Pike’s County needs to be surveyed.”“No.”“Baby girl. This will be the l
“Did you lose the number to your barber, young man?” Esmerelda’s grandfather was on my ass from the moment he arrived. I learned the hard way never to be alone with him. Millie was my protection and savior.“Leave the man alone. He must be nervous.”“He looks like broody James Dean.”“Yes, he does.” She fixed my hair with her fingers and then straightened my tie. “You look very handsome.”“I’m nervous,” I confessed.“You’ll feel better when you see her.” The music began, and everyone took their seats. Cyrus stood beside me under the trellis that Diesal had made especially for the wedding. Beautiful bouquets of white flowers adorned the edges. The little touches made this simple wedding extraordinary. My Esmerelda appeared, guided by her father. Intimidatingly, he wore his military dress blues with countless medals and pins. She was exquisitely wrapped in sheer white lace with a sexy plunging neckline. She moved as if floating on air. A thick diamond and platinum headband secured her l
Doc had left, and the Colonel was in the guest room downstairs. I finally had Esmerelda to myself. The rest of the night, she hadn’t stopped touching me, giving me gentle caresses and sneaking her hand inside my clothes seductively. She unabashedly rubbed each muscle on my chest and abdomen, making my body vibrate with need. Finally, in bed, I petted and pulled her into the position I wanted before kissing her neck and jaw. Her nails dug into my skin, and a fever erupted in our blood. “Please, Ghost.”She was delirious with need. Our bodies joined first out of desperation and then lovingly. Before her orgasm, she submitted. My teeth sank into her lovely neck. This time, I claimed her reverently, like making love. The next morning, the Colonel had gone to the store, and I gave myself a moment of reprieve out on the deck. The claiming had made our lust carry through the night. I was allowed a few sips of coffee before my beauty appeared.Pride filled my soul that she couldn’t sleep wit
