LOGINNADIA POV
I did not sleep that night.
I sat on the floor of the bedroom with my back against the door. I had locked it. I had never locked it before. Not once in five years of marriage. But tonight, I locked it.
I could hear him outside. I could hear his footsteps. I could hear him pacing. I could hear him stop in front of the door. I could hear him raise his hand to knock.
He did not knock.
He stood there for a long time. Then he walked away.
I sat there in the dark and held my stomach. The baby. The tiny life inside me. The only thing that was still mine. The only thing he did not know about. The only thing he could not take.
I will not let him take you, I thought. I will not let him take anything else from me.
---
The next morning, I did not come out of the bedroom until I heard the front door close.
I waited until I was sure he was gone. I waited until the elevator doors had opened and closed. I waited until the penthouse was silent.
Then I opened the door and walked out.
The study was still open. The folder was still on the desk. I had left it there. I had wanted him to see it. I had wanted him to know that I knew.
I walked past the study.
I walked to the kitchen and made myself tea. I sat at the table and stared out the window. The city was waking up. The sun was rising. The world was going on like nothing had happened. Like my life had not just fallen apart.
I did not know what I was going to do. I did not know where I was going to go. I did not know how I was going to survive.
But I knew I was not going to stay.
I was not going to stay in this house. I was not going to stay in this marriage. I was not going to stay with a man who had lied to me, stolen from me, and replaced me.
I was going to leave.
But not yet.
Not until I had everything.
Not until I had proof.
Not until I could destroy him the way he had destroyed me.
---
I went back to the bedroom to pack.
I opened the closet. I pulled out a suitcase. I started filling it with clothes. I did not take much. I did not need much. I just needed enough to get away.
I reached for a sweater on the top shelf.
My hand brushed something behind it. Something small. Something hidden.
I froze.
I pulled it out.
A photograph.
---
I did not recognize it at first.
It was a hospital room. Pale walls. Too-bright lights. A woman in a bed. A baby in her arms. Julian standing beside her. He was smiling. He was holding her hand. He was looking at the baby like it was the most precious thing in the world.
The woman was Serena.
The baby was a little boy.
I turned the photograph over.
There was writing on the back. Julian's handwriting. Neat. Careless. Familiar.
My son. Born August 14th.
August 14th.
I knew that date.
I knew that date better than I knew my own name.
August 14th was the day I lost my baby.
August 14th was the day I sat in a hospital room and listened to the doctor tell me there was nothing they could do.
August 14th was the day my husband left for a business trip and did not come back for three weeks.
He was not on a business trip.
He was in a hospital room.
With her.
With their son.
---
I sat down on the floor.
I held the photograph in my hands. I stared at it. I stared at the little boy. I stared at his dark hair. His dark eyes. His chubby cheeks. I stared at the way Julian held him. The way Julian looked at him. The way Julian loved him.
He had never looked at me like that.
He had never loved me like that.
He had never wanted a child with me like that.
I had lost our baby, and he had been celebrating his. I had been grieving, and he had been laughing. I had been alone, and he had been with her. I had been dying inside, and he had been building a new life. A new family. A new son.
He had replaced me.
He had replaced our child.
He had replaced everything.
---
I did not cry.
I wanted to. I wanted to scream. I wanted to throw things. I wanted to break everything in this room. I wanted to burn this house to the ground.
But I did not.
I sat there on the floor and I held the photograph and I felt something inside me change. Something cold. Something hard. Something I had never felt before.
Hatred.
Pure. Burning. Hatred.
I had loved him. I had loved him more than I had ever loved anyone. I had given him everything. My time. My work. My heart. My soul. My body. My dreams.
And he had taken it all and given it to someone else.
He had taken my child. My company. My home. My life.
And he had given it to her.
---
I stood up.
I put the photograph in my pocket.
I walked out of the bedroom.
I walked to the study.
I sat down at his desk.
I opened his laptop.
---
JULIAN POV
I came home early.
I never came home early. But today I did. I needed to see her. I needed to look into her eyes. I needed to know what she was going to do.
She was sitting in my study when I walked in.
She was at my desk. My laptop was open in front of her. She was reading something. She did not look up when I walked in.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
She did not answer.
"Nadia. What are you doing?"
She looked up.
Her eyes were different. Harder. Colder. She was not the woman I married. She was not the woman I had betrayed. She was someone new. Someone I did not recognize.
"I am learning," she said.
"Learning what?"
"Everything."
She turned the laptop around. The screen was facing me. It was an email. An email I had sent to Serena. An email I had forgotten to delete. An email that contained everything. The plans. The transfers. The forged documents. The blueprints. Everything.
"You left your email open," she said. "You should be more careful."
I did not speak.
I could not speak.
"I know everything now," she said. "I know about the company. I know about the house. I know about the money. I know about her."
She stood up.
She walked around the desk.
She stood in front of me.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out the photograph. The one I had hidden behind her sweater. The one I had forgotten about. The one I had thought was safe.
She held it up.
"And I know about your son."
---
NADIA POV
He went pale.
Paler than I had ever seen him. Paler than I thought possible. He looked at the photograph. He looked at the date. He looked at me. He looked at the hatred in my eyes.
He knew.
He knew that I knew.
He knew that everything was over.
"You went through my things," he said.
His voice was quiet. Weak. Broken.
"Yes," I said.
"You had no right."
"I had every right."
"You—"
"I had every right, Julian. I had every right to know that my husband was cheating on me. I had every right to know that he had a son with another woman. I had every right to know that he was stealing my company. I had every right to know that he was building a house for his mistress. I had every right to know that he was planning to leave me."
I stepped closer.
"I had every right to know that while I was mourning our child, you were celebrating his birth."
He did not speak.
He did not deny it.
He did not explain.
He just stood there.
And that was the worst part.
If he had denied it, I could have been angry. If he had lied, I could have screamed. If he had begged, I could have walked away.
But he did nothing.
He just stood there.
Like a man who had been caught.
Like a man who had known this day would come.
Like a man who had been waiting for it.
"You knew," I said.
He did not answer.
"You knew I would find out eventually. You knew I would find the photographs. You knew I would find the truth."
He did not answer.
"You just did not care."
He did not answer.
"You did not care that you were hurting me. You did not care that you were destroying me. You did not care that you were destroying our marriage."
He did not answer.
"You did not care about me at all."
He looked at me. For a moment. Just a moment. I saw something in his eyes. Something I had not seen in a long time. Something I had forgotten he had.
Guilt.
"You are right," he said. "I did not care."
---
I nodded.
Slowly.
Like I was confirming something to myself. Like I was making a decision. Like I was closing a door that had been open for too long.
"Then I am done," I said.
I walked past him.
I walked to the door.
I stopped.
I turned back.
"I filed for divorce this morning," I said.
He looked at me. His eyes were wide. His mouth was open. He looked like a man who had just been shot.
"You did what?"
"I filed for divorce."
"You cannot do that."
"I already did."
"I will not sign it."
"You do not have to."
"I will fight it."
"Fight it all you want."
I turned to leave.
"Nadia."
I stopped.
"If you walk out that door, I will destroy you."
I turned back. I looked at him. I looked at the man I had loved. I looked at the man I had married. I looked at the man who had taken everything from me.
"You already did," I said.
I opened the door.
I walked out.
I did not look back.
---
JULIAN POV
She left.
She walked out of the study. She walked down the hallway. She walked out of the penthouse. She walked out of my life.
I stood there.
Alone.
The photograph was on the desk. The laptop was open. The folder was still there. The evidence of everything I had done. Everything I had destroyed. Everything I had lost.
I picked up the photograph.
I looked at it. I looked at Serena. I looked at the baby. I looked at myself. I looked at the smile on my face. The smile I had never given Nadia. The smile I had saved for someone else.
I sat down in the chair.
I put my head in my hands.
And for the first time in years, I felt something.
I felt regret.
JULIAN POVThe board voted me out on a Friday.I did not see it coming. I should have. The signs were there. The missed payments. The lost clients. The frozen accounts. The media coverage. The whispers in the hallway. The looks I got when I walked into the building. The way people stopped talking when I entered a room.I should have seen it.But I did not.I walked into the boardroom that morning like I owned the place. Because I did own the place. I had built it. I had made it successful. I had made it profitable. I had made it untouchable.Or so I thought. They were all sitting at the table when I walked in. Twelve faces. Twelve people who had once trusted me. Twelve people who had once believed in me. Twelve people who were now looking at me like I was a stranger."Julian," one of them said. "Please sit down."I sat down."We have taken a vote."I looked at them. I did not understand."A vote on what?""On your position as CEO."I felt my blood run cold."What are you talking about
NADIA POVThe bathroom was too quiet.I sat on the cold tile floor with my back against the bathtub, staring at the little white stick in my hand. Two pink lines. Clear. Unmistakable. I was pregnant. My hands were shaking. I did not know if it was from joy or fear or something in between. I only knew that I had taken this test six times in the last hour, and every single one said the same thing. I was.going to have a baby.I pressed my palm flat against my stomachI. Still flat. Still empty. But not for long. The stared last time I did this, I was happy. The last time I did this, I ran to Julian with the test in at my hand and he lifted me off the floor and spun me around until I was dizzy. He kissed me like I was the most precious thing in the world. He whispered that we were going to be a family. He promised me he would be there for every appointment. Every milestone. Every sleepless night. He was not there for any of it.I closed my eyes and tried not to remember. The bleeding. The
NADIA POVThe ballroom was too bright.Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling like frozen tears. The walls were lined with gold. The floors were polished marble. Everyone was dressed in their finest. Everyone was smiling their finest smiles. Everyone was pretending.I was pretending too.I stood beside Julian and smiled at people whose names I would not remember tomorrow. I shook hands with men who looked through me like I was invisible. I nodded at women who whispered behind their champagne glasses. I played the part I had been playing for years. The perfect wife. The silent partner. The woman behind the man.No one asked me what I did. No one asked me what I thought. No one asked me anything. They only asked about Julian. How was Julian? How was the company? How did it feel to be married to such a powerful man?I smiled and said all the right things.I was good at saying all the right things.I had been doing it for so long that I almost believed them.Almost.---Julian stood be
NADIA POVI found the photograph by accident. It was in his coat pocket. The black coat he wore to the gala. He had left it on the chair in the bedroom. He never left his clothes out. He was always so careful. So precise. So neat. But that night, he was careless.I was hanging it up when I felt something in the pocket. A piece of paper. A photograph. I pulled it out without thinking. I did not expect to find anything. I was just tidying up. I was just being a good wife.I froze. She was beautiful. She was smiling. She was standing beside Julian. His arm was around her waist. Her head was on his shoulder. They looked happy. They looked like a couple. They looked like they belonged together.I had never seen her before.I had never seen him look at anyone the way he was looking at her.I turned the photograph over. There was writing on the back. NADIA POV I found the key three days later. It was in his coat pocket again. The same coat. The same pocket. He had forgotten about it. He had forgotten he had left it there. He had forgotten that I had already found one secret in that coat. I waited until he was asleep. I waited until I was sure he would not wake up. Then I crept out of bed and walked to the study. My hands were shaking. I did not know what I was going to find. I did not know what was waiting for me on the other side of that locked drawer. I only knew that I had to know. I had to see. I had to understand. I unlocked the door. I walked inside. I knelt down beside the desk and slid the key into the lock. It turned easily. Too easily. Like it had been waiting for me. Like it wanted to be opened. I pulled the drawer open. Inside was a folder. Thick. Black. Unmarked. I lifted it out and set it on the desk. I sat down in his chair. I opened the folder. The first page was a legal document. I did not understand it at first.
