Two days later, Lucian was finally discharged.

I had never seen anyone look so pleased about leaving a hospital.

“You’re smiling,” I pointed out as I watched him sign the final discharge papers.

“I’ve been trapped in here for almost two weeks.” He replied.

“You’ve been recovering from a gunshot wound and a stab wound.” I stated.

“Exactly.”

“That doesn’t make you sound any less dramatic.”

Lucian gave me a look.

And despite myself, I still smiled.

He looked better— so much bett

I called Claire again. The phone rang until the call disconnected, leaving me staring at her name on the screen with my jaw clenched. Still nothing. I had called her so many times that I had lost count. Margot had tried reaching her too, with no success. Neither of us knew where she was, and the longer she remained unreachable, the more my uneasiness grew. Claire knew I worried about her. She also knew I disliked being kept in the dark, particularly now, when she was carrying our child. If she was busy, she could have at least sent a message. If she needed time alone, she could have told me. Anything would have been better than this silence. I lowered my phone and looked across my study at Margot. She sat in the chair opposite my desk, her cane resting beside her. Despite her recovery, she looked as sharp and formidable as ever. “She might simply be occupied,” she said. “She has been occupied for hours?” “I didn’t say it was likely. I said it was possible.” I exhale

I stared at Caroline, struggling to comprehend what she’d just said. “Tired of watching me get everything?” I repeated. She kept mute. “What exactly do you think I’ve gotten, Caroline?” I asked. Caroline let out a disbelieving laugh. “Are you serious? Look at your life!” “I’m looking at it.” “You married Lucian Dhark. You had access to his wealth, his connections, and his influence. Then, after everything fell apart, you returned to practicing law and somehow ended up working with Margot Sinclair herself. Now you’re handling major cases and getting the kind of attention most lawyers spend their entire careers chasing.” She shook her head. “And you expect me to believe that none of it has anything to do with your connections?” I watched her carefully before speaking, choosing my words very carefully. “Did you ever stop to consider that I might actually be good at my job?” She rolled a pair of hazel eyes. “Oh, please.” “Did you?” This time, she looked away. I

The moment Caroline turned toward me, I knew she wasn’t going to make this easy. “Now tell me, Claire. What exactly do you think I’ve done?” I held her gaze. “I think you’ve been helping spread the rumors about me.” I replied in a beat. She scoffed. “And what makes you think that?” “Because you knew me—better than most people.” “That doesn’t answer my question.” “Eva Sterling approached you, didn’t she?” Caroline’s expression remained unchanged, but something in her eyes sharpened. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Don’t insult my intelligence.”Caroline scoffed loudly. “You really are entitled You’re the one who showed up at my workplace, followed me to my car, and practically threatened me into having this conversation. Now you’re accusing me of conspiring with a woman who’s on trial for a number of serious offenses.” “I’m asking you a question.” “And I’ve answered it.” “No, you haven’t.” She let out an exasperated breath and reached for the do

The last thing I needed was for Lucian to find out where I was. I glanced at my phone as the cab crawled through traffic, the screen lighting up with his name for what felt like the hundredth time that afternoon. ‘Lucian Dhark’ I stared at it until the call came to a stop. A few seconds later, another call came through. I sighed and turned the phone facedown on my lap. I could already imagine how the conversation would go. Where are you, Claire? Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving? Where’s the driver? Where’s your bodyguard? And when I finally told him the truth, he’d probably demand that I send him my location and wait wherever I was until someone came to collect me. I loved that man, but sometimes his determination to protect me made me want to pull my hair out. I understood why he was worried. Between the rumors spreading about me, Eva’s ongoing trial, and the fact that I was pregnant, he had more than enough reasons to be on edge. But I couldn’t spend t

“Someone in my house has been working for Eva?” I repeated—as if repeating the words might somehow make them less absurd. Margot nodded. “That’s what Hart told me.” I stared at her, trying to make sense of what she’d just said. A maid. Someone who had worked under my roof for years, someone who had access to my home and the people in it, had been feeding information to the woman who had nearly destroyed my life. My first instinct was to dismiss it. Not because I believed Eva was incapable of something like this—I knew precisely what she was capable of. But Hart Sullivan? I didn’t trust that bastard. Hart was a violent criminal who had spent years doing Eva’s bidding, and that’s all he would ever be in my eyes. While his testimony had helped expose her lies, I wasn’t about to start accepting everything he said as the unquestionable truth. “Are you certain?” I asked Margot. “And before you answer, remember who we’re talking about. Hart has hurt innocent people

The meeting ended earlier than expected. By the time I returned to my office, Tessa was waiting beside my desk with my updated schedule. “Your two o’clock meeting has been moved to tomorrow,” she informed me. “The overseas investors have confirmed the call for four, and Mr. Bennett would like to discuss the revised acquisition proposal before the end of the day.” “Have him send the documents to my email. I’ll review them tonight.” Tessa glanced at her tablet. “You also have dinner with the Singapore delegation at seven.” I thought about it for a moment. “Ask Whitmore to attend in my place,” I said. She looked up. “You want to cancel?” “Delegate it.” I corrected. “All right.” She made a note. “Is there anything else you’d like me to move?” “No. That’s enough.” Tessa studied me for a moment before asking, “Are you going home?” “Yes.” She didn’t comment, but I caught the faintest hint of amusement in her expression. “What?” “Nothing, sir.” “Then why are
