CHAPTER 4: Not Just Him Anymore

KENDRICK

I shouldn’t have kissed her. It wasn’t even a kiss worth overthinking—just her cheek, a brief moment of contact that should’ve meant nothing.

But it did, and that was the problem.

I ruffled my hair, staring blankly at the surveillance analytics displayed across my MacBook’s screen while absolutely none of it registered in my head.

I dragged a hand down my face slowly before muttering under my breath, “Get a hold of yourself.”

One girl shouldn’t be affecting me this much, especially not her.

I stood from the chair, loosening the sleeves of my black shirt before leaving the office upstairs. I barely made it halfway down the hallway before another door opened.

There she was. Yulia froze when she saw me. Her blonde hair was messy, like she had just gotten out of bed, and she wore an oversized shirt that hung slightly off one shoulder. Completely casual, unaware of how dangerous she looked.

I forced my expression to remain neutral. “What’s up with you?” I asked casually, my voice quieter than intended.

She patted her hair before answering, “I’m hungry.”

“Just woke up?”

She nodded sleepily. I glanced at the watch on my wrist. “It’s noon.”

That made her eyes widen instantly. “Wait… seriously?”

“You slept like the dead,” I chuckled under my breath.

She shrugged. “Well… I didn’t sleep early last night, remember?”

“Oh, I surely do.”

She rolled her eyes slightly, though I noticed the small smile she tried hiding. Everything about this girl was becoming something I couldn’t ignore.

“Come on,” I said before turning toward the stairs. She followed behind me quietly.

The dining area was already prepared by the staff when we arrived downstairs. Plates of roast chicken, buttery mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables, Yorkshire puddings, and warm dinner rolls were arranged neatly across the table, alongside fresh juice and tea.

Yulia stopped briefly at the sight. “You people really live like this every day?”

“You people?” I repeated, amused.

“You know exactly what I mean.”

I pulled out a chair for her. “Sit down before you start sounding judgmental.”

She sat while muttering, “I am judgmental.”

“Noted.”

The conversation flowed more easily than it should have while we ate. After eating, we moved outside toward the pool area. The weather was decent for London. Rare enough to enjoy.

Yulia sat across from me, pulling her legs slightly beneath herself on the lounge chair while sunlight reflected against the water behind her. I shouldn’t have noticed how pretty she looked. But I did.

“So,” I started calmly, “which university do you attend again?”

“King’s College London.”

Impressive.

“And you study?”

“Law.”

I arched my brow, skeptical. “Like your father, huh?”

She looked amused by my reaction. “Yeah… You seem surprised.”

“I can’t picture you willingly reading legal textbooks for fun.”

“I don’t do it for fun,” she said quickly. “I cry during exam season like everyone else.”

I laughed loudly, surprising myself. She noticed it too.

“You laugh more than people say,” she pointed out.

I leaned back slightly. “People talk too much.”

“That’s true.”

A comfortable silence settled between us after that, and strangely enough, I didn’t mind it. That alone should’ve concerned me, because I didn’t do this. I didn’t sit around casually talking for hours.

I definitely didn’t enjoy it, yet here I was, listening to her rant about terrible professors and impossible coursework while I found myself genuinely interested.

My phone suddenly buzzed against the table between us. The screen lit up instantly.

Natalie.

I noticed Yulia’s eyes drift toward the phone before quickly looking away, but not fast enough. Her expression changed for just half a second.

And suddenly, I had to fight back a smirk. Interesting. Very interesting.

I answered and placed the phone on speaker beside me. “Natalie.”

“Wow,” Natalie’s voice flowed through brightly. “You actually answered.”

“I usually do.”

“Debatable,” she teased lightly. “Where are you?”

I glanced toward Yulia deliberately before responding, “Home.”

“Well, apparently, your mother is secretly married now.” She laughed softly. “I overheard her talking about some honeymoon plans with my mother.”

“Yeah.”

Yulia stayed suspiciously quiet beside me. Watching. Listening.

Natalie continued talking. “Are you busy today?”

Right before I could answer, Yulia’s smooth voice slipped into the space, needing Natalie to know there was a her with me. “You want to watch a movie with me?”

My eyes slowly shifted toward her. She stared right back innocently. Then, just like that, I caught it. Jealousy. Possessiveness. Small, but definitely there.

I snorted before I could stop it.

Natalie’s voice sharpened immediately through the speaker. “Who was that?”

Yulia suddenly looked very interested in the pool water.

How cute.

“I’ll call you back.”  I ended the call and stared intensely at Yulia.

She squirmed, uttering. “What?”

“Don’t do that,” I warned quietly.

“The thought just popped into my head.” She shrugged like it was no big deal.

I stood slowly from the chair, still staring directly at her. “You interrupted me.”

She gulped, crossing her arms immediately. “So?”

I snickered. “So… you sounded jealous.”

“Jealous?” Her mouth dropped open instantly. “I was not jealous.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

I stepped closer, just enough to make her nervous. “Then why’d you suddenly need my attention the second another woman called?”

Color immediately rose to her cheeks. “It was just a thought,” she mumbled, like she hated herself for letting jealousy rear its head and have her say things she was too scared to follow through on.

She stood abruptly from the pool lounger. “Forget I said anything.”

“Mhm.”

“I mean it.”

“Sure.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly. “You’re annoying.”

“And you have a jealous streak.”

“I do not!” She shot back.

I tilted my head, lips curled. “Since you want to watch a movie so badly, go on—move your jealous ass inside.”

“I am not jealous!” She hissed.

I started walking back toward the house, still amused. Behind me, I heard her mutter something under her breath that sounded dangerously close to an insult.

I barely paid attention because, for the first time since she entered my life, I wasn’t the only one losing control anymore. She was responding to me, whether or not she understood her feelings.

I had already crossed a line in my head that couldn’t be undone.

KENDRICKWith my latest project underway, I knew more was bound to hit the fan, but before it did, I wanted to do something nice and private for my girl.So when Yulia told me she wanted to go on vacation, I decided there was only one way to do it—give her an experience so unforgettable that every other trip would pale in comparison. Admittedly, I didn’t like vacation like that. Anytime I left the country, it was for business. I saw no value in taking time off just to look at the fucking water or be by my lonesome. All I did was be swallowed up by my thoughts, and whether I was around Europe or on other continents, the shit didn’t feel good.I also hadn’t met a woman that I felt comfortable enough with to fly out of the country. The majority of the time, when you spent too much fucking time with a woman, she justifiably began to expect more from the relationship.I wasn’t on that before Yulia. Just gifts and a couple of sex-filled nights together were all I was willing to proffe

YULIA“That was quite a show.”I froze so suddenly that I swear my heart stopped.Every muscle in my body locked in place, and for several seconds, I couldn't bring myself to turn around. I knew that voice. I had heard it enough times to recognize it anywhere, and right now, hearing it was probably the most embarrassing thing that could have happened.Oh, God.I slowly looked toward the doorway and found her standing there with the most amused expression I had ever seen on her face. “Shit,” Kendrick muttered under his breath.I wanted to disappear.“Don't move,” Kendrick said to me and looked toward his cousin. “Celeste. Face the wall and give us a minute to get dressed.”Celeste immediately burst into laughter. “Okay, okay. I'm facing the wall. You two carry on with whatever professional activities you were apparently conducting in here.”“Celeste,” Kendrick warned.“I'm quiet!”I covered my face with both hands, feeling the heat spread all the way to my ears. There was no way I wa

  • The Wrong Kind Of Love   CHAPTER 85: A Beautiful Mistake

KENDRICKI stared at Yulia from across my office, unable to decide which emotion deserved to win. Anger, relief, hurt, or the overwhelming urge to cross the space between us and pull her into my arms. She stood there quietly, her fingers intertwined in front of her. For the first time since she'd walked through my door, the confidence I'd always seen in her seemed to have disappeared.I leaned back against the window and arched a brow. “Well?”She gulped, holding tight onto her purse. “I uh… I came to apologize.”I said nothing. Just stood there, arms crossed, taking in her sad expression. Her eyes dropped to the floor before she forced herself to look at me again. “I should have come sooner, but I didn't know what to say. Every time I thought about calling you, I remembered what I said at dinner.”“You mean when you told me loving me is going to cost you everyone else?”She nodded slowly. “Yes.”My hands curled into fists on the desk as I glared at her. “The last time Sophie came bet

YULIA“I really messed up, Adeline.” I stopped beside my bed and pressed my phone tighter against my ear.I had walked the length of my bedroom so many times that I was beginning to memorize every little detail of the carpet beneath my feet. The cream curtains were half-drawn, allowing the morning light to spill across the room, but I barely noticed it. My mind was still stuck at dinner the night before. My father's proud smile. My mother's questions.Kendrick's silence. And then the sound of that glass breaking in his hand.“You think?” she replied immediately.I winced at her tone. “Adeline.”“No, Yulia. I'm serious. What were you thinking?”I resumed pacing, rubbing my forehead. “I wasn't thinking clearly.”“You obviously weren't.”“I know.”I could hear her sigh through the phone.“I don’t understand. What are you really scared of, Yulia?”“Of the future.” I peeped through my window, but was lost in thought. “I’ve been thinking about that lately. And I said that to him.”“Yulia…”

  • The Wrong Kind Of Love   CHAPTER 83: The Consequences of Anger

KENDRICKBy the time I left the penthouse, I was furious. Not the kind of anger that made me want to break something. This was worse. It sat beneath my skin, hot and restless, replaying every word Yulia had said until I could barely think straight.Maybe I'm scared that one day you'll get tired of fighting. My hands tightened around the steering wheel. How could she think I would get tired? After everything we'd been through? After everything I'd done to prove that I wasn't going anywhere?I pressed harder on the accelerator, my jaw clenched. The city lights blurred past the windshield.I loved her. That was the problem. If I didn't love her, none of this would hurt so fucking much.My phone rang through the car speakers.Victor.I stared at the screen for a second before answering. “What’s up?”“Damn, bro,” Victor said with a laugh. “You chose the exact moment I'm out of the country to go to the club without me?”Despite myself, I let out a bitter chuckle. “Trust me. I'm not having a

KENDRICKThe cut on my palm started throbbing. I had barely noticed it at dinner. Not with Yulia sitting across from me, refusing to meet my eyes while her father happily talked about her supposed boyfriend.Justin.The lie she'd told her mother had been sitting at that table like a ticking bomb, and I'd been stupid enough to think we could keep hiding forever. The moment I stepped into the small sitting room, my mother followed behind me with a first-aid kit.“Kendrick, sit down before you make that wound worse,” she ordered, gesturing to the couch.“I’m fine, Mom.”“You're bleeding on the floor.”I glanced down. She was right. A thin line of blood had run from my palm toward my wrist. With a frustrated sigh, I dropped into one of the chairs in the sitting room while she sat beside me, examining the wound. “This isn't too deep,” she murmured.“I know.”She sat beside me, taking my hand. “This might sting.”“Right.”She carefully cleaned the small cuts, and the moment the antiseptic t
