Chapter 1 The Woman's Provocation

Penulis: Fluffcloud
I was meeting a client at a café when a server splashed coffee on me. Before I could say anything, the server began sobbing. "I didn't do it on purpose!"

Yet the defiance in her eyes was palpable.

I frowned. "Get some tissues for me."

The server begrudgingly handed some tissues over to me and said, "I'm just a student working part-time here. Please don't report me to our boss, okay?"

I was wiping the stain off my clothes, though I figured my effort was in vain. My clothes were already ruined.

"Are you trying to avoid punishment after causing trouble?" I snapped.

"I told you it was an accident," she retorted. "Besides, I already apologized. Why are you making things difficult for me?"

Had the server been upfront about it, I wouldn't have pressed further.

"Just because it's an accident doesn't mean you don't have to compensate me," I reminded sarcastically.

"It's just a shirt! How much is it? I'll pay you," she spat out the words.

Whisking out a few hundred-dollar bills from her wallet, she slammed the money on the table and jerked her chin at me. "Is this enough?"

I shook my head.

Her smug expression froze. Reluctantly pulling out a few more bills, she snarled. "Is it enough now?"

"My clothes are from the latest season," I drawled out. "You can check how much it's worth on the official website."

Some eager onlookers had already checked the price of my clothes and gasped. "Ten thousand dollars?"

The server immediately turned grim. "Are you trying to scam me? How can a shirt possibly cost ten thousand dollars? Come on, I could get plenty of shirts like yours anywhere."

I couldn't be bothered to argue with her. Just as I was about to call the manager, the server's expression changed.

"Miss, I'm sorry," she blurted out.

My client also happened to call at that time.

As I stopped in my tracks, the server quickly added, "Miss, you should answer your phone now. With all your money, surely, this small amount isn't worth fussing over."

Since my meeting with my client was suddenly canceled, I headed home instead. Sean said he was going to bring his girlfriend over today.

Hearing his voice outside, I was about to go downstairs when I heard a familiar voice.

"That old woman was an absolute lunatic today! I already apologized to her, yet she refused to let me off the hook. You have no idea how arrogant she was. She was just trying to bully poor people like me. Sean, your sister's nothing like that, right?"

Sean patted his chest and assured her, saying, "Don't worry. Sasha isn't that kind of person!

"Sasha?"

As I descended the stairs, I flashed a smile at the server from the café, who was still gawking at me.

Unaware of the awkwardness between us, Sean led his girlfriend toward me and said, "Sasha, this is my girlfriend, Isobel Lane. Izzie, meet my sister."

Isobel froze. "Hi, Sasha…"

"Don't bother," I said indifferently and sat down. "You just called me an old woman earlier."

Sean finally caught up. "Izzie, so the woman you met at the café earlier was my sister? What a coincidence!"

Looking wronged, Isobel hung her head low and murmured, "Sasha, does that mean you're still mad at me?"

I was rendered speechless.

"Sasha has plenty of clothes. Losing one isn't a big deal," Sean said, rushing to comfort her. "Hush, don't cry."

"I know." Isobel sobbed, leaning into Sean. "I might come from a poor background, but I've never thought of taking advantage of you guys. I'll compensate Sasha for her shirt."

"Forget it. We're family, after all," Sean said.

He then turned to me and shook my arms, pleading, "Sasha, have some pity on Izzie, will you? You're the bigger person, so just let this go, okay?"

Slightly uneasy from his rough grip, I chided, "You're not a child anymore, but you're still acting like one."

Sean beamed. "Sasha, is that a yes?"

He turned toward Isobel and quickly urged, "Izzie, say thanks to Sasha now!"

Isobel reluctantly complied.

After all, she was Sean's girlfriend. My expression softened as I said, "You're still young, so be more mindful of your actions. I don't expect much from you two. Sean's my only brother, and I genuinely wish the best for both of you."

"Sasha, don't worry," Sean chimed in happily. "Izzie's the best. When the time comes, we'll both help you out at the company so that you won't tire yourself."

I nodded in relief. "You two have fun at home. I still have some work to handle at the company."

"Sure. You've worked hard, Sasha."

As I was about to reach the garage, I suddenly realized I had forgotten something and turned back.

"Sean, is your sister in charge of the company?"

"Yeah. I'm still young, so it doesn't matter if I have fun for a few more years. I'll also have more time to be with you."

"But I've seen news about siblings fighting over a company. You and your sister get along well, but you should still be cautious."

I didn't hear Sean's response, nor did I plan to go back inside. I simply turned around and left.

Once the wedding date was set, the next steps were choosing a dress, finalizing the venue, and taking wedding photos. While Eleanor took charge of every single detail of the wedding arrangements, my new company had also begun to thrive with its newly established reputation. At noon, Karl came to pick me up. We were going to the hotel for a food tasting today. When we arrived, I felt a little unwell as I got out of the car.Handing the car keys to the valet, Karl looked at me with concern. "What's wrong? Are you feeling under the weather?"I patted my chest. "It's nothing. I'm just a little nauseous."He asked the hotel for a glass of lemon water, and I felt much better after drinking it. "If you're not feeling well, we can come back another day," he suggested."No need. Let them bring out the dishes."Unfortunately, today's menu was full of rich, heavy dishes. The first dish, tuna tartare, was manageable, but the next one—steak—almost made me throw up the moment I smelled it.

"Actually, if you hadn't drugged me back then, Karl and I wouldn't have ended up together so soon," I said. "But I can put the past behind me."Agnes immediately perked up, and even Isobel was mustering all her strength to stifle her laughter. Her twisted expression looked somewhat ridiculous. "Sasha, is this for real?""Of course. You can continue living the same life as before. However, I have one condition."Agnes' eyes lit up. "What is it?"Her life had been a misery these past few weeks. Now that she saw a glimmer of hope, she wouldn't let her chance slip. I turned toward Isobel. "You just need to return the house Sean gave you."She had quite the skills to charm Sean to the point where he was practically willing to die for her. As a victim of her countless schemes, it was only fair that I returned the favor. Her smile waned. "Agnes, that's where the baby and I will be living.""That place isn't even that big. I'll get you somewhere even better," I chimed in. "You, Gra

Thanks to Karl pulling the strings, the house Sean and Agnes were living in was auctioned off, and all their cars and other assets were liquidated as well. But one of my properties was already transferred to Isobel, and I decided not to pursue it further. Less than a month later, Karl placed the forcibly reclaimed money in front of me. I was just about to take it when he pulled it back. "Give it to me. Consider it your wedding gift for me."I rolled my eyes. "Keep dreaming. Hand it over."Karl raised his hand. As I reached for it, I lost my balance and tumbled straight into his arms.He pressed me down and kissed me. "Darling, I've already given you my wedding gift. Are you really not considering making our relationship public?"I smirked, deliberately teasing him. "A marriage of convenience—you said it yourself."A year ago, after Sean got into trouble, his debts were so overwhelming that I had no way out. I had no choice but to offer up the company's shares to Karl, and he

On the day of the court hearing, just as I stepped out of my house, I spotted Karl leaning against his car.He glanced over at me, and I drank in his looks. He wasn't a man with particularly striking looks, but he had a gentle charm that made him more appealing the longer I stared at him. My gaze lingered on his fingers for a moment before I looked away. "What are you doing here?""I'm here to pick you up."Ever the chivalrous man, he led me to the car and opened the door. "Let's go. I'll take you to court."As Karl and I arrived together, Isobel approached us and affectionately linked her arm with mine. "Sasha, is this Mr. Yeager?"I yanked my arm away. "Hi, I'm Karl. I'm…" His voice trailed off as he glanced at me and smiled. "I'm Sasha's friend."Isobel didn't look the least bit embarrassed. "Oh, so you're Sasha's friend? Well, Sasha really trusts you, huh? She even told you all about how she's been hogging her brother's inheritance without holding anything back…"As if r

Eleanor had set a time to sit down and have a proper discussion about my relationship with Karl. Given the current circumstances, I didn't think it was the right time. At the same time, I was worried that Agnes might act up, so I thought about canceling the meeting. "This is a matter between the elders," Eleanor said. "Even though you and Karl have already registered your marriage, we shouldn't skip the necessary formalities. It's only right for us to meet your family out of courtesy."Agnes promptly agreed. The meeting took place at a hotel under Yeager Group. Since I had just fallen out with the Carringtons, I simply nodded at them upon meeting. Though Agnes' expression gave nothing away, she actually had the audacity to demand ten million dollars as a gift from the groom, saying she wouldn't agree to the marriage otherwise."Furthermore, Sasha can't take this money with her. Once she marries into your family, we'll cut all ties with her."This wasn't a discussion about ma

I no longer believed in the grand lies Agnes spun. "Even if I were to get married, I'd make sure to sign a prenuptial agreement. Besides, that villa is my personal property to begin with. As for Carton Group, it has nothing to do with me since the day it was handed over to Sean."I had made myself clear, yet he was still unyielding. "Sasha, just say yes."After a long silence, I finally told him the truth. "I can't give you the villa."An unfamiliar, odd smile suddenly crossed his face."Izzie was right, after all," he said numbly. "You're willing to spend a fortune on an outsider, yet you won't even give me a house. Now that I'm struggling with the family business, you still won't help. Sasha, have you ever truly considered me your brother?"I never imagined he would say such a thing. Inhaling sharply, I grabbed a mug on the desk and hurled it at him. The cup hit his face before crashing to the floor, shattering into pieces. A few shards were stained with the blood tricklin
