I slowly opened my eyes, groggily taking in my surroundings.

The hospital room was a blur, but the pain in my head was all too real. I tried to sit up, but a sharp, stabbing pain shot through my head, forcing me back onto the pillow.

One of the nurses rushed over to me, her face etched with concern.

"Welcome back, Iris," she said, her voice soft and soothing. "You were hit by a car outside the hospital. But don't worry, you're going to be okay."

I tried to remember what had happened, but my memories were hazy and unclear.

And then, like a tidal wave, it all came flooding back - Clara's tears, her apology, and her shocking announcement.

I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, and I couldn't breathe.

The doctor came over to me, his face serious and concerned. "Iris, I'm glad to see you're awake," he said.

"You're going to be okay. You'll be discharged tomorrow, but if you want to see your husband, we can arrange for you to visit him."
