I quickly adjusted myself, sitting up straight. This man makes me very nervous, especially if we are not in the office.
“Um… sir, are you still here?”
“Yeah…. The order is taking longer than I anticipated,” he moves to sit across the couch I was sitting on.
He sits in silence for a while, studying me, probably waiting for me to confirm I am okay.
“How was the party?”
“I canceled, didn’t feel like it,” he replied.
“Are you okay?” he asked. “Did Kai ruin your date? That troublemaker, I will reprimand him for it.”
“Oh… no, of course not, it is just, well, a bit complicated.”
He raised his eyebrows curiously; I took a deep breath. Maybe someone like him would help me get a new perspective on this.
“Sir… how do you feel about open relationships?”
He looks at me confused, “open relationships? Like when you get to sleep around and stuff. Even though you are in a relationship.”
“Yes, like as long as you come back to each other's kind of relationship.”
He looks to examine me for a while. “I don’t judge anyone for their life, like if you are happy with it,” he shrugs, but that is not the answer I am looking for.
“What I mean is, would you be okay to be in an open relationship?”
He burst out laughing at my statement and looked at me with amusement, “I don’t know, are you proposing?”
My heart skips a beat with that question. Is he implying that he wouldn’t mind being in an open relationship with me?
My shock is definitely evident to him because he chuckles more as he looks at my face, “It is a joke, Miss Marino,” he continues to laugh.
I have never seen this man this casual before and, for some reason, this feels refreshing, Brian Beckett with a sense of humor.
Something the whole office believed was only acquired by Kai from the whole Beckett family.
“Personally, I wouldn’t really want to be in an open relationship. I am a bit greedy with my love,” he says. “The thought of someone touching and pleasuring you makes me so mad I get overcome with nausea.”
He manages to maintain eye contact with me. I feel like his eyes want to devour me. I feel way too close to this man even though he is just across the table, it feels like our skins are touching.
“That is an instance in which I am your girlfriend, right?” I managed to say with his intense gaze at me.
“Right, exactly what I mean. I wouldn’t imagine my girlfriend sleeping with someone else but me,” he says, “anyway people are different, maybe your boyfriend wouldn’t mind an open relationship.”
“Yeah, I should head back to my table now,” I stood up so quickly he even looked at me confused.
“Have a nice night, Miss Marino,” he says. I nodded and walked back to the room upstairs where Miles and I were having our dinner.
I find him waiting for me, with the table fully adorned with food, mostly my favorite food. He looks at me before sheepishly saying, “Hey, sorry about that.”
“Oh…. Um… okay,” I went to sit with him and that was the last I heard of the open relationship topic for the whole night.
He kept telling me to stop thinking about it, but it felt a bit too late. He had already planted the seed of doubt in our relationship.
Even as weeks go by, each time I look at him I cannot help but remember him asking me to open our relationship up, like did he already have someone in mind when he asked?
“Miss Marino?” I heard a yell; I looked at the door and Mr. Beckett is standing there.
“Oh… sorry sir, I zoned out.”
“It’s time to leave,” he says, “Thank you for doing overtime to help me with the blunder.”
I nodded at him and slowly started packing. The clock said 8 o’clock, and I somehow understood Miles’s concerns. For the entire week after his birthday, I had been working overtime.
But in my defense, I was feeding two adults. I needed the extra cash I got from overtime.
“Would you like a ride home?” I looked at him for a while before responding.
Though I have had him drive me home in the past, it still felt awkward to let him do so, especially when it was him driving.
“Um…...”
“Come on, I insist, I am the one who kept you here,” he says.
I almost choked my own breath when we got to the parking lot. Usually it would be a big SUV or any other car. He didn’t like to drive two-seaters to work, but today must have been an exception.
“Nice car,” I tell him, nervously hopping into the passenger seat.
He gives me a grin and replies, “Thanks, my little brother got me this last year.”
“Oh…... it is the first time I have seen you drive it,” I face palmed myself after that, like, of course, it was the first time I have seen it.
He chuckles at my reaction, and just continues driving, “Are you hungry?”
“Um… yes, I will text Miles to see if he cooked,” I quickly whipped out my phone and texted him. I see Brian frown from the mirror but am too engrossed in my chats to ponder about it.
“Did he?” he asks as he watches me put my phone away.
“No, I will get a takeaway.”
“I know a place close; I also need to get some food, you know, being a bachelor and all.”
I chuckled at his statement, “Well sir, if you really were serious about getting a partner, you would be married by now.”
“You think I am not serious?” His voice sounds like he is a bit disappointed.
“How many dates have you been on this year?”
“Well, my big sister forced me on three, which was a disaster, and my little brother forced me to go on five dates, so in total eight.”
“And what made you not want second dates and stuff.”
“I am very particular about the women I like,” again this perfectionist. He must be waiting for some perfect submissive wife who is also a perfectionist.
“What is your type, Mr. Beckett?”

[Brian’s POV]After Trisha and Miles’s attacks, everything became very hard because Ellie became a depressed mess, and the internet was not making it better. With the relentless attacks on her character and career, I needed a very strong team.I got support from everyone; my little brother was full on trying to get his lawyer friends to get a good lawsuit against everyone who is heading this smear campaign. We had rounded up everyone who was part of it and were ready to start the rollout of the lawsuit. The investigation by the Health Professional Council had concluded, and with the help of my mental check and my new therapist, it was clear she didn’t break any rules.I had paid a lot of money to post about the whole investigation and its results, which was the first step to clearing up Eleanour’s name. But before we got to the second step, my mother entered with some grim news.“What brings you here? Aren’t you enjoying your day with your daughter-in-law?”She sighed before sitting d
The headline was glaring at me, “therapist abuses her power.” “Brian Beckett getting taken advantage of?”By the time I had rested, everyone on the internet had already scrutinized my character and started a smear campaign against my name.“Don’t let it get to you,” Brian said, “I have someone fixing all this right now.”But nothing was getting better, because my phone rang and it came with devastating news.“Who was that?”“Health Professional Council, I am under investigation, and my license has been suspended until they finish their investigation.”All my hard work has come to be in vain, because now even my career will not be spared. In my quest to destroy my enemies, I destroyed myself as well, because I was dealing with enemies that wouldn’t mind burning the house down with everyone in it.I spent the week wallowing in self-pity. I didn’t even attempt to go on social media, because I knew it would be a slaughterhouse and I would be the pig on display.Brian would come in and out
Miles looked distraught, and Trisha was a bit smug about it.“Oh…. So you are also cheating,” Trisha said, “you really have been playing at our faces.”“Ellie, what…. What is this…. Who is this guy?” Miles' question seemed to irritate me; I didn’t want to answer his silly questions, so I just rolled my eyes.I was really over this stupid man in a way that I didn’t care how he felt anymore.“Who he is has nothing to do with the two of you,” I said firmly, “and I am not cheating; we broke up.”“We didn’t break up, you and I haven’t spoken in a while,” he moved to touch me, but one eye contact with Brian, he pulled back.“Oh…. I must have forgotten to do that, we are over Miles,” I said nonchalantly.“So you are cheating on him too,” Trisha instigated again, quite remarkable that she has won the guy, but she still feels the need to compete with me.“Open relationship, remember? Anyway, you should find a place to stay. The lease for this apartment has been terminated; you should be out by
Everything was falling into place, so it was my time to play into the mess by terminating my lease agreement.“You really like watching this show, don’t you?” Brian growled in my ear.“Well, I am waiting for an opening to go get my clothes. I have until the end of next week,” I said.Brian wore his heart on his sleeve; he is the type of guy to get affected by the little things. But that was not a bad thing, I didn’t mind him having feelings, matter of fact, it made it more appealing that he has feelings. He slowly lifted me to his arms, bringing me to the table.Brian making dinner every night was usual; regardless of how hectic his job was, he picked me up every day after work.Every day, he reminds me why he is 100 times better than Miles would ever be, because he was a man of many talents.“What are we having tonight?” I say, teasing him.He giggled and started explaining every dish on the table like a chef he is.“And for dessert?” I asked teasingly.“Well, you don’t like sweet th
The Facebook live session was very long and annoying. Trisha and Miles were crying in each other’s arms. They all began their story with their college encounter, painting a beautiful love story. The love of two young college students was then dealt a heavy blow.It was a heavy blow. “She befriended me to steal him from me,” Trisha said before obnoxiously crying with a snort coming out of her.“When I met Eleanour, she never told me she was friends with Trisha.” Miles’ words were met with heavy ridicule.Because many started to piece together the story and it was too inconsistent, one commented, “Wait, so you dated Eleanour while in love with Trisha, aren’t you the one to blame for that?”“We were on a break,” Trisha defended, “He couldn’t break up with her because she was my friend.”No matter what they said, the comments didn’t change; they were condemning them for their actions.‘Miss male-centered thinks we are stupid.’“Y'all dragged an innocent, unsuspecting woman into your drama
