Chapter sixteen.

Evelyn's POV.

I hastily grabbed a book from the shelf, trying to create an alibi for when Ethan reviewed the CCTV footage.

I wanted him to think I had only come to the office to borrow a book. With the book in hand, I quickly returned to my room, flinging it onto the bed.

"Fuck!" I exclaimed, one hand on my waist and the other running through my hair.

What had I done to make Ethan suspicious of me? I thought I had been careful enough.

Just as I was trying to process my thoughts, I heard a loud commotion outside.

I quickly stepped out of my room to see what was happening. To my surprise, Ethan had slapped Olivia, leaving her looking shocked and stunned.

I couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction. It seemed like Olivia had finally confronted Ethan, poor thing.

"How dare you!" Olivia shouted, her voice echoing through the hallway. "Did you think I'm Evelyn? Uhh? You would regret what you just did, I promise you!"

She stormed off, climbing the stairs, and I quic

  • The return of the Heiress    chapter sixty one

Chapter sixty one.Evelyn’s POV.I groggily turned over, my hands brushing against something unexpected on my bed. I groaned, slowly opening my eyes to find myself surrounded by not one or two, but dozens of Rolex wristwatches. I sat up with a jolt, my gaze darting around the room to confirm the surreal sight. Fifty Rolex watches stared back at me, their sleek faces glinting in the light. I blinked twice, wondering if I was still dreaming, but the watches remained. I pinched myself, wincing in pain. This was real. What the heck was going on?"Do you like them?" I turned to face Alex, and that's when I realized he was in the room all along. He was sitting in his wheelchair, positioned at the door entrance, staring at me with an unreadable expression. "Wa…wait, you brought all of these?" I asked, my eyes widening in surprise. He nodded, wheeling his chair closer to me. "Who else would have?" he replied, his tone matter-of-fact.I stood up, a chuckle escaping my lips. "But why?" I a

Chapter sixty.Evelyn's POV."Let's grab dinner before heading home," he suggested, his eyes locking onto mine. I glanced at my watch, but he chimed in, "Come on, we still have time." I hesitated, not wanting to drive home late, but he added with a charming smile, "I'm hungry, please?" My resolve softened as I met his gaze, and I eventually nodded. We headed to a five-star restaurant, where I took a seat by the window. When the waiter arrived, I ordered, and Alex said, "Same as hers," his voice low and smooth. The waiter nodded and left. As I looked up, I caught Alex staring at me, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “What?!” I blurted out as I I felt my cheeks flush, and he chuckled."Can I not admire the beauty in front of me?" My heart skipped a beat. I didn't want to feel this way, but my body betrayed me, butterflies dancing in my stomach.“What is life like, without Ethan?” The question caught me off guard, and I hesitated, unsure how to respond. "I don't get what you mean

Chapter fifty nine.Evelyn's POV.I stepped outside, and Alex's eyes widened as he took in my appearance. "You're so beautiful," he said, his voice low and sincere. I felt my cheeks flush, and I couldn't help but smile. "Thank you," I mumbled, trying to play it cool. "You're not looking bad yourself," I added, meaning every word. He looked stunning in his gray suit. "Let's go," I said, and he nodded. "You know how to drive?" he asked, and I shook my head, "No, I don't." He raised an eyebrow, his expression serious, and I burst out laughing. "Just kidding!" I said, holding his wheelchair and pushing him outside. "If you didn't know how to drive, what would have happened?" I asked. "Anything except canceling the date," he replied, his eyes sparkling. I laughed. "Why is the date that important?”"It is because I want to make you feel special," he said, and my cheeks flushed. I wasn't used to being treated with such thoughtfulness, and I didn't know how to respond. "Thank you," I

Chapter fifty Eight.Evelyn's POV."A date?" I asked, chuckling, and he nodded. "Yes. Am I asking for something too big?" he asked. I shook my head, though he couldn't see me, as I explained, "You don't act like you're in a good mood this morning, and now you're asking for a date." I said. He chuckled, "And who says I'm not in a good mood?" He asked. I paused, standing in front of him with my hands on my waist, raising my eyebrows, "You chased Lucas away. If that's not you being in a bad mood, then what is?" I asked. He leaned in closer, his voice taking on a husky tone. "It's me wanting my privacy." I furrowed my brow, confused. Before I could press he added, "So, will you go out with me?" I hesitated, thinking aloud, "What about after the court case?" He shook his head, his expression turning serious. "Tomorrow isn't promised."I smiled wryly. "I have a lot of work to do." He cut me off with a charming smile. "Spending twenty minutes with me won't hurt. Unless you're embarras

  • The return of the Heiress    chapter fifty seven

Chapter fifty seven.Alex's POV.The morning sun streamed in, and I groaned, opening my eyes. As I looked around, I realized Evelyn was nowhere to be found. I chuckled to myself, knowing she was probably already stressing about the case.At this moment, I didn't need anyone to tell me she was innocent – I could see it in the way she threw herself into it. I felt a wave of relief and happiness, realizing I had been wrong to try to hate her. I almost wanted to kick myself for being so blind. The feeling of guilt mixed with happiness was overwhelming, but I was glad the truth was finally sinking in.I winced in pain as I struggled to sit down, hissing softly as I landed in the wheelchair. I hated this thing with passion; it was a constant reminder of my limitations. All I wanted was to be free and go back to my normal life.I missed my company, and I had no idea what was happening there. I wheeled myself out of the room, the aroma of coffee wafted through the air, and I knew instantly

  • The return of the Heiress    chapter fifty six

Chapter fifty six.Evelyn's POV."Wait, Lucas said that?" I asked, and Alex nodded.I was confused – Lucas's words had contradicted each other. What the hell is happening? If Lucas was trying to impress his friend, why not talk to Alex about it directly? It seemed obvious Lucas had started the conversation. My thoughts were interrupted when Alex snapped his fingers in front of my face. "Is everything okay?" he asked. I nodded and smiled, not wanting to worry him without being sure. "Yeah, I'm fine," I said."You need some time to work on this case," Alex said. I nodded in agreement. "That's why I want you to bring the staff back," he added.Realizing the direction of this conversation, I chuckled. "Don't worry, I can handle this," I assured him.He handed me a lot to process, and I reassured him, "You don't need to worry about me." With that, I excused myself to clear my head.Once in his office, I sat down, played the video, and watched it intently, biting my pen in concentration

  • The return of the Heiress    chapter fifty five

Chapter fifty five.Evelyn's POV.I shook my head, thinking I was overthinking things. Lucas was looking at me normally, but deep down, I felt like I was lying to myself. “Ye….yeah,” he stuttered. As a lawyer, I'd noticed that people who stutter when asked unexpected questions often had something to hide. But looking at Lucas, I couldn't imagine him being involved in the case. Because he really has no gain. I breathed out, feeling overwhelmed by my own thoughts. I needed to take a break and clear my head. Just as I was about to compose myself, Alex said, "You were asking him a question," and I snapped back to attention. "Oh, yes, so as I was saying, Lucas, what's your take on this case?”"I...I...don't get," he said, and I smiled, chewing slowly. "Do you think my father really did injustice to Alex's dad?" I asked, and his eyes darted to Alex before returning to me. "You're putting me in a tight corner," he said, and I chuckled. "It's just a yes or no response," I pressed, and

Chapter fifty four.Evelyn's POV.As we watched, something caught my eye, and I immediately exclaimed, "Rewind, rewind, rewind!" Alex looked at me curiously.“Alex, rewind!”Alex rewound the video, and it showed a man sitting beside Alex's father, smiling as they chatted about nothing in particular. My eyes darted to Alex, and I asked, "Who's this?" He replied, "Lucas's father," and I relaxed, thinking he couldn't possibly be involved. "Hmm," I hummed.Alex asked, "What? Don't tell me you are suspecting him?" I replied, "Everyone's a suspect," but Alex shook his head. "Not Lucas's dad. That man would put his life on the line for me." I ignored Alex's protests and continued to zoom in on the video, trying to get a clearer view of the man. "Why does he look familiar?" I mumbled to myself."There's no way you could possibly know him," Alex said, and I chuckled. "Yeah, I get it, but I'm not mistaken – his face looks familiar. I think I've seen him somewhere, but where?" I played the

  • The return of the Heiress    chapter fifty three

Evelyn's POV.Alex chuckled. "Lucas is a brother to me," he said, and I nodded, not wanting to argue. Alex never grasped the rules of the game – never trust anyone. If this case wasn’t Alex's own, I'd never have involved him. In law we were being taught that everyone was a suspect until proven otherwise."So, where do we start?" Alex asked, his eyes scanning the surroundings. I met his gaze, my mind already racing with possibilities. "I'll do the thinking, and you just affirm and add if possible," I said, and Alex nodded, a hint of a smile on his face. "Hopefully, you're smart," he teased, and I feigned annoyance, rolling my eyes. "Come on, we both know I'm smarter than you," I said with a smirk, and Alex chuckled.Just as the banter was flowing, Alex's expression turned serious, and he asked, "What about Ethan?”As I looked at Alex, a wave of realization washed over me – we hadn't discussed Ethan since his recovery from the coma.
