Chapter 2

Autor: Words to Life
On the way to the auction, Valentina sat beside me in the car.

"Alessia, Salvatore said you're like a corpse in bed. He only married you for your pretty face. But after seven years, even that gets boring," she said, voice dripping with mockery. "He needs a woman like me. Someone who actually knows how to keep a man interested."

I closed my eyes. I was too tired to entertain her chatter. My thoughts were focused on the escape plan three days from now.

Right after breakfast, my high school senior, Luca Bellini, messaged me.

Everything was in place. As long as I could board the ferry, Nicola and I would finally be free.

When the car reached a highway on the outskirts of the city, another vehicle suddenly rammed straight into us. The car instantly lost control and slammed into the roadside guardrail.

Then, a storm of gunfire erupted.

I instinctively covered my lower abdomen with my hand as the force of the crash threw my body forward.

In the chaos, Valentina suddenly shoved me hard. I was completely unprepared and was pushed out of the car.

"Salvatore told you to protect me! Distract them!" she screamed.

Before I could react, a bullet grazed my shoulder. Blood poured out, and a wave of pain flooded my body.

Inside the car, Valentina was completely unharmed. Still, she clutched her face and screamed louder than I did.

After two gunshots rang out, she fainted on the spot.

Salvatore and his men arrived right on time. Within seconds, they had the situation under control.

Salvatore rushed toward us like a madman and yanked the car door wide open. When he saw the unconscious Valentina, his voice trembled. "Tina!"

Meanwhile, I was lying right at his feet. Blood had already soaked most of my clothes.

He anxiously picked Valentina up and walked straight past me. He had passed by me three times without sparing me a glance. It was as if I were nothing more than a piece of garbage in the way.

"Take Tina to the hospital! Now!" he roared at the bodyguards.

One of them hesitated before speaking. "Don Falcone, Donna Falcone is still bleeding…"

Salvatore paused for a beat. I thought that he might turn around and look at me.

Even just once.

Instead, all I got was his cold voice. "She's tough. She won't die. She can get a cab home."

With that, he left.

I wasn’t even worth as much as a dog. Even a dog would get some concern from its owner when it got hurt.

With the last bit of strength I had left, I forced myself up from the ground and began moving forward, one step at a time.

I don't know how long I walked, but I eventually found a small private clinic by the roadside.

The doctor was an elderly woman. She froze when she saw me covered in blood.

"Miss, what happened to you?"

"A gunshot wound. Please help me remove the bullet fragment," I said calmly. It wasn't the first time something like this had happened.

"You'll need anesthesia. It'll hurt badly if you don't."

I shook my head and clutched my abdomen. "I can't take anesthesia. I'm pregnant."

The woman stared at me. Her eyes were filled with shock. Removing a bullet without anesthesia was basically torture.

I bit down hard on a towel. Cold sweat soaked through my back. As the doctor searched through my flesh with tweezers, my whole body trembled with pain.

Soon, she pulled out the bloodied fragments.

She dressed my wound, then sighed. "Miss, you should have your husband pick you up. You need rest. You can't keep pushing yourself."

Husband?

A smile tugged at the corners of my lips.

"My husband's dead."

  • There's No Afterlife for Love   Chapter 10

Five years after my death, I drifted through the air, watching as the former mafia Don approached my grave with a bouquet of jasmine in his hands.Only five years had passed, yet he looked more than a decade older. His hair had turned gray, and his back carried a deep weariness. It was as though a single gust of wind could knock him over.He slowly crouched down. Those hands that once held a gun were now trembling as they brushed the dust off the photo on the headstone."Alessia. I'm here to see you."He set the bouquet down and gently traced the photo engraved on the stone with his fingers. I was smiling faintly in the photo, yet he couldn't stop the tears from streaming down his face."Brando started kindergarten today," Salvatore said, his voice catching. His fingers started to tremble even more than before. "But when he came home, his eyes were red. A bunch of kids surrounded him and laughed at him. They called him a motherless child. A bastard."But he didn't cry. He clen

Salvatore didn't leave Meropolis. Instead, he bought a villa across the sanatorium and spent his days watching me with a pair of binoculars.Sometimes he would watch me strolling in the garden. Other times, he would see me basking in the sun on the balcony.Just seeing me from a distance was enough for him. Even if that was all he could do.A month later, news came from back home. Valentina had gone mad in the basement. She screamed Salvatore's name daily and clawed at her face until it was raw. On one rainy night, she swallowed an entire bottle of sleeping pills. When Salvatore heard the news, he was carving a wooden horse for his unborn child. His hand paused. A splinter sliced his finger."Cremate her," he muttered. "Don't let her soil the Falcone family's land."He felt nothing for Valentine anymore. If it hadn't been for her, things between us would never have ended this way. Still, he knew the true culprit was himself.During that entire month, I never once left the san

When Salvatore arrived in Meropolis, it was pouring.Dozens of black cars surrounded the sanatorium.Soaked to the bone, Salvatore ignored his bodyguards' attempts to stop him and stormed straight into the lobby. "Alessia! Show yourself!"His voice carried the edge of someone on the verge of breaking.People in the lobby screamed and scattered in panic."Mr. Falcone, this is a sanatorium," Luca said. "Please keep your voice down."He stood at the staircase with several security guards blocking the way."Luca." Salvatore fixed his gaze on the man who had once been his high school classmate. "Hand her over.""She doesn't want to see you," Luca replied, not moving an inch. "Let her go. Haven't you tormented her enough these past seven years?""That's between husband and wife," Salvatore snapped. "It's none of your business."He suddenly pulled a gun from his waist and pointed it directly at Luca's forehead. "Move, or I'll kill you."Luca's expression didn't change. Instead, h

Salvatore ignored Valentina's screaming. He rushed upstairs and shoved open my room's door. The room still carried the faint scent of jasmine perfume I always wore.Like a madman, he began searching every corner of the room in hopes of finding some trace I had left behind. Even a single note would do.But aside from the signed divorce agreement, there was nothing. Then, his eyes landed on my desk. A small notebook lay there.Salvatore picked it up with trembling hands and opened the first page."First year of marriage. I didn't expect Salvatore to remember my birthday. He gave me a necklace. His secretary probably picked it out, but I was still happy," the first entry wrote. He flipped through the pages. "Third year of marriage. He brought a strange woman home. That same day, he locked me in the basement for three days. My heart hurts so much."Fifth year of marriage. The baby was gone. He never came to the hospital. I listened to the rain outside the window. It felt like somet

Salvatore's hands began to tremble uncontrollably.Suddenly, yesterday's events flashed through his mind.Valentina had pushed me out of the car. Covered in blood, I lay at his feet.I had been carrying his child at that time.Salvatore shot to his feet. He stood so abruptly that his vision went black for a moment. "Get the car ready! We're going to that clinic Alessia visited yesterday! Now!"The Maybach sped through the night, running eight red lights along the way.The doctor was just about to close up for the night when Salvatore burst into the small clinic."Where's the woman who came in yesterday with a gunshot wound?"Salvatore grabbed the doctor by the collar, his eyes bloodshot. The old woman flinched, then recognized him. "Oh. So you're the husband of that woman who almost died. She's gone. She left a long time ago.""How badly was she hurt? What about the baby? Is the baby still alive?" Salvatore pressed urgently. The doctor looked at him with undisguised contempt

Valentina stood inside the Falcone residence wearing my custom evening gown.Salvatore sat at the head of the table, tapping his fingers against the polished surface. For some reason, the look I had given him before I left kept replaying in his mind. He couldn't shake it."Salvatore, it's time to cut the cake," Valentina said, looping her arm through his. "Why hasn't Alessia brought the cake yet? Is she trying to embarrass me on purpose?"Salvatore frowned. "I'll go check."He shrugged off Valentina's hand and headed upstairs with a dark expression. When he pushed open the bedroom door, the timid figure he expected to see wasn't there. The room felt strangely empty. His gaze fell onto the two documents on the bedside table. One was the prenuptial contract from seven years ago. The other was the divorce agreement he had just signed."Do you really think you can play me, Alessia?"Salvatore let out a cold laugh as he tore the document to pieces. Then, he pulled out his phone an
