Salvatore Falcone froze, then anger lit his eyes.

He strode forward and grabbed my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze. "What the hell is wrong with you, Alessia Santoro?"

I ignored the sharp pain in my jaw. Instead, I lifted his shirt and tossed it onto the floor.

Salvatore's eyes darkened instantly. "Looks like you want another trip to the basement."

The basement was dark and damp. It was filled with snakes and spiders that slithered across me whenever I woke up.

Any hint of disobedience meant being locked down there. Sometimes it was for three days. Sometimes it lasted for a month.

I used to be terrified. But now, I simply looked at him. There was no emotion in my eyes.

My silence seemed to enrage him further. Just as he raised his hand to hit me like he always did, a sugary voice drifted down from the staircase. "Salvatore, what got you all worked up this early in the morning?"

Valentina Caruso slowly descended the stairs wearing my nightgown.

That nightgown was the first and only gift Salvatore had ever given me. Now, it was on another woman's body.

Salvatore let go of me. The dark expression on his face immediately softened.

Valentina walked straight to the Donna's seat and sat down as if it belonged to her.

"This really is the best seat," she said.

Salvatore watched the scene unfold and said nothing. He silently allowed her behavior.

The housekeepers nervously brought out breakfast.

Valentina picked up the bowl of hot oatmeal, but didn't take a bite. Instead, she turned her gaze toward me.

"Alessia, don't be upset with Salvatore. He's just got a temper," she said, raising the bowl as if she were about to hand it to me.

Suddenly, her hand tilted, and the scalding oatmeal spilled onto the back of my hand.

"Ah!" Valentina cried out as if she were the one burned.

The scalding pain shot through me. Two blisters swelled on the back of my hand almost instantly.

Salvatore rushed forward, gripping Valentina's hand to inspect it. "Are you hurt? Let me cool it."

Valentina shook her head, her eyes glossy with tears.

"I'm fine. I just… spilled Alessia's breakfast," she said, glancing at my injured hand. "Alessia, is your hand okay? It's all my fault. I was careless."

Salvatore finally looked at my hand and frowned. "Don't think you can win my sympathy with that pitiful look. Clean this up!"

I lowered my gaze to my swollen hand, but I couldn't feel the stinging pain.

My heart had gone numb.

Seven years ago, my brother, Nicola Santoro, had gotten into an accident. His treatment required medicine that cost a fortune.

Salvatore had appeared out of nowhere. He said he could save Nicola, but I would have to become his wife—a nominal Donna.

We agreed to a seven-year contract.

Once it ended, he promised he wouldn't interfere with my life.

Now that Nicola's treatment was almost finished, I had reached out to a high school friend. Once the agreement expired, I would leave with him.

All I had to do was endure Salvatore until the day the contract ended.

I was about to tend to my hand when Valentina spoke again. "Salvatore, there's a charity auction tonight. I'd love to go check it out."

She leaned against him before flicking her eyes to me. "As the Donna, you should show up too, Alessia. People would talk if you don't."

The blisters on my hand had begun to ooze blood. Cold sweat dripped from my forehead.

Clutching my wrist, I refused coldly, "I'm not going. I need to get this treated at the hospital."

Salvatore's frown deepened. "It's just a scratch. Don't be dramatic."

"Just a scratch?" I asked, staring at my ruined hand. "Is anything short of death just a scratch to you, Don Falcone?"

I turned to leave, refusing to look at the two of them again.

Salvatore's voice rang out from behind me. "Alessia, stop right there!"

He stepped in front of me, blocking my way. "You are going to that auction. It's your responsibility as the Donna. Are you telling me you want to give up that title?"

It was a blatant threat.

He knew I couldn't risk losing the title while Nicola still needed care.

I had no choice but to give in until he's out of danger. "Fine. I'll go."

  • There's No Afterlife for Love   Chapter 10

Five years after my death, I drifted through the air, watching as the former mafia Don approached my grave with a bouquet of jasmine in his hands.Only five years had passed, yet he looked more than a decade older. His hair had turned gray, and his back carried a deep weariness. It was as though a single gust of wind could knock him over.He slowly crouched down. Those hands that once held a gun were now trembling as they brushed the dust off the photo on the headstone."Alessia. I'm here to see you."He set the bouquet down and gently traced the photo engraved on the stone with his fingers. I was smiling faintly in the photo, yet he couldn't stop the tears from streaming down his face."Brando started kindergarten today," Salvatore said, his voice catching. His fingers started to tremble even more than before. "But when he came home, his eyes were red. A bunch of kids surrounded him and laughed at him. They called him a motherless child. A bastard."But he didn't cry. He clen

Salvatore didn't leave Meropolis. Instead, he bought a villa across the sanatorium and spent his days watching me with a pair of binoculars.Sometimes he would watch me strolling in the garden. Other times, he would see me basking in the sun on the balcony.Just seeing me from a distance was enough for him. Even if that was all he could do.A month later, news came from back home. Valentina had gone mad in the basement. She screamed Salvatore's name daily and clawed at her face until it was raw. On one rainy night, she swallowed an entire bottle of sleeping pills. When Salvatore heard the news, he was carving a wooden horse for his unborn child. His hand paused. A splinter sliced his finger."Cremate her," he muttered. "Don't let her soil the Falcone family's land."He felt nothing for Valentine anymore. If it hadn't been for her, things between us would never have ended this way. Still, he knew the true culprit was himself.During that entire month, I never once left the san

When Salvatore arrived in Meropolis, it was pouring.Dozens of black cars surrounded the sanatorium.Soaked to the bone, Salvatore ignored his bodyguards' attempts to stop him and stormed straight into the lobby. "Alessia! Show yourself!"His voice carried the edge of someone on the verge of breaking.People in the lobby screamed and scattered in panic."Mr. Falcone, this is a sanatorium," Luca said. "Please keep your voice down."He stood at the staircase with several security guards blocking the way."Luca." Salvatore fixed his gaze on the man who had once been his high school classmate. "Hand her over.""She doesn't want to see you," Luca replied, not moving an inch. "Let her go. Haven't you tormented her enough these past seven years?""That's between husband and wife," Salvatore snapped. "It's none of your business."He suddenly pulled a gun from his waist and pointed it directly at Luca's forehead. "Move, or I'll kill you."Luca's expression didn't change. Instead, h

Salvatore ignored Valentina's screaming. He rushed upstairs and shoved open my room's door. The room still carried the faint scent of jasmine perfume I always wore.Like a madman, he began searching every corner of the room in hopes of finding some trace I had left behind. Even a single note would do.But aside from the signed divorce agreement, there was nothing. Then, his eyes landed on my desk. A small notebook lay there.Salvatore picked it up with trembling hands and opened the first page."First year of marriage. I didn't expect Salvatore to remember my birthday. He gave me a necklace. His secretary probably picked it out, but I was still happy," the first entry wrote. He flipped through the pages. "Third year of marriage. He brought a strange woman home. That same day, he locked me in the basement for three days. My heart hurts so much."Fifth year of marriage. The baby was gone. He never came to the hospital. I listened to the rain outside the window. It felt like somet

Salvatore's hands began to tremble uncontrollably.Suddenly, yesterday's events flashed through his mind.Valentina had pushed me out of the car. Covered in blood, I lay at his feet.I had been carrying his child at that time.Salvatore shot to his feet. He stood so abruptly that his vision went black for a moment. "Get the car ready! We're going to that clinic Alessia visited yesterday! Now!"The Maybach sped through the night, running eight red lights along the way.The doctor was just about to close up for the night when Salvatore burst into the small clinic."Where's the woman who came in yesterday with a gunshot wound?"Salvatore grabbed the doctor by the collar, his eyes bloodshot. The old woman flinched, then recognized him. "Oh. So you're the husband of that woman who almost died. She's gone. She left a long time ago.""How badly was she hurt? What about the baby? Is the baby still alive?" Salvatore pressed urgently. The doctor looked at him with undisguised contempt

Valentina stood inside the Falcone residence wearing my custom evening gown.Salvatore sat at the head of the table, tapping his fingers against the polished surface. For some reason, the look I had given him before I left kept replaying in his mind. He couldn't shake it."Salvatore, it's time to cut the cake," Valentina said, looping her arm through his. "Why hasn't Alessia brought the cake yet? Is she trying to embarrass me on purpose?"Salvatore frowned. "I'll go check."He shrugged off Valentina's hand and headed upstairs with a dark expression. When he pushed open the bedroom door, the timid figure he expected to see wasn't there. The room felt strangely empty. His gaze fell onto the two documents on the bedside table. One was the prenuptial contract from seven years ago. The other was the divorce agreement he had just signed."Do you really think you can play me, Alessia?"Salvatore let out a cold laugh as he tore the document to pieces. Then, he pulled out his phone an
