Chapter 2

Author: Sylvaren
Daniel replied almost immediately.

"Got it, Chloe. That's a beautiful name."

I wrote back politely.

"Thank you. My grandmother named me."

My parents had only ever called me "Meatball." They said it sounded like the name of a fat little piglet.

Then they shipped me off to a Texas farm as if I were one.

When I turned six, it was time for me to start first grade at the local elementary school.

The school needed a legal name for its records.

Grandma called my parents again and again.

Every time, they brushed her off.

"Fine, we'll come up with something that suits her. You have to understand, Mom. It's not easy naming a child like her.

"We're swamped with Fashion Week and brand launches. We barely have time to sleep.

"Besides, it's just a name. What's the rush?"

Grandma waited month after month.

Then the first day of school came.

Afraid I would miss enrollment, Grandma wrote "Chloe" on the form herself.

"Sweetheart, you don't have to live up to your parents' impossible standards of perfection.

"I want you to be as free as the wind and wildflowers on the open plains. Bloom wherever you please and go wherever life takes you."

Even as a little girl, I understood.

As my parents' "Meatball," I would have been hidden away in some dark corner forever.

So I let Meatball go and became Chloe, the girl who was adored by her grandmother.

Just then, the butler knocked on my door.

"Dinner's ready," the butler said, not bothering to use my name.

He knew perfectly well that I was a member of this household.

The staff called Isabella "Ms. Isabella" but they did not even bother to address me by name.

I didn't know whether my parents had ordered it or the staff were simply snobs.

It was a good thing I knew this place had never been my home.

I had never let myself hope for anything from them.

When I went downstairs, the living room nearly blinded me, even through my sunglasses.

Rows of Chanel couture gowns and red-soled heels were arranged neatly across the room.

A luxury jewelry consultant wearing white gloves presented Isabella with a selection of exquisite pieces worth a fortune.

I stopped on the stairs.

A flicker of embarrassment crossed my father's face.

"Tomorrow is your sister's 18th birthday party. She needs to look her best."

Then he looked me up and down, taking in my huge hoodie and what looked like fat bulging beneath it.

"As for you, wear your own clothes. The less noticeable you are, the better.

"There's nothing wrong with being fat, as long as you keep a low profile. That way, the fashion press won't notice you.

"If you insist on squeezing into a gown that doesn't fit, you'll make a laughingstock of yourself."

Their time. Their money. Their company.

Even the smallest scrap of love they had left.

My parents were too stingy to give me any of it.

I calmly nodded to show I understood.

I didn't argue or fight him for any of it.

Rather than reassure him, my silence seemed to make my father uncomfortable.

"You're still a young woman. I'm just saying you shouldn't dress like a clown. That doesn't mean you should look like a complete slob.

"I'll have Isabella send up a few loose-fitting outfits she bought that turned out to be too big for her."

I looked up at my father, who seemed to think he was doing me a favor, and turned him down flat.

"No, thanks."

He thought he was doing me a huge favor. He had no idea I wanted nothing from him.

A year later, I starred in Ian's film and became famous around the world overnight. At that year's Golden Globes, I walked onstage to accept the Best Actress award. My parents had secured seats near the front, leaped up and shouted toward the cameras, "That's my daughter! Chloe Sinclair!""Baby girl, Mommy and Daddy are so proud of you!"From the stage, I gave them a brief glance and said nothing, keeping a faint smile on my face.Beside me, a well-known Hollywood host smiled and asked, "People say you're proof that God has favorites. You've got the whole world at your feet."Is there anything you'd like to say to the parents who cheered for you tonight?"I spoke calmly into the microphone."No. I have nothing to say to them. I only want to say a few words to my grandmother on her farm in Texas."Some people love a daughter only when she makes them money and makes them look good. Some people love only a beautiful face."Thank you, Grandma, for loving me unconditionally all my life. You

The officer accessed the security system right away.Soon, clear footage from the previous night was playing on the large screen. It showed Isabella creeping into the cramped dressing room in the middle of the night and slipping the diamond necklace under my mattress. The next morning, she pretended to discover it missing and called the police on me.The truth was now out in the open. The officer's face hardened, and he turned to Isabella, who was shaking."Miss Isabella, you need to rein in that malice of yours."You framed your own sister and falsely accused her. What you did is inexcusable."Our parents looked mortified. Neither could say a word in Isabella's defense. The officer turned to me, looking genuinely ashamed. "I'm very sorry, Ms. Chloe."The reported value was 500,000 dollars, making this a major theft case. That's why we followed standard procedure and went to Columbia University to bring you in for questioning. I'm sorry for taking up your time."Everyone in the room we

That afternoon, Isabella called the NYPD and reported a custom diamond necklace worth 500,000 dollars stolen. She named me as the suspect. In front of several officers, Isabella cried as she accused me."That custom diamond necklace is worth half a million dollars! Mom gave it to me for my 18th birthday."I would've given you anything you wanted. So why did you have to steal what I love most?"I watched her put on her little act, knowing she'd orchestrated the whole thing to ruin my reputation and future. She'd even made a point of inviting Richard over so he could see me at my lowest.I answered calmly."I never took it. I've never even seen it."But the lead officer emerged from the cramped dressing room I'd been staying in, a glittering diamond necklace in his hand and a stern expression on his face."Ma'am, we found this under the mattress you slept on."The officer stared at me."Do you have anything to say about that?"I frowned."If I'd stolen it, why wouldn't I have taken it wi

After Alexander dropped me off, I slept soundly. In the morning, I put on a baseball cap and a mask and went to get breakfast alone.Campus was crawling with people. Influencers, reporters, and students roamed the grounds, livestreaming on their phones and apparently searching for someone.Suddenly, a familiar shrill voice called out to me."Meatball, come here."I froze when I saw my mother waving from a few yards away. Why are they here looking for me? Have they found out the truth? But when I walked over, she barely glanced at me. She pulled out her phone, held up a screenshot from the viral video, and demanded, "You go to Columbia too. Have you seen this girl around campus?"I pressed my lips together. I didn't want to admit it was me, and I didn't want to lie either. When I didn't answer, Isabella hooked her arm through our mother's and laughed at me."Mommy, don't put her on the spot. Pretty girls hang out with other pretty girls, especially someone as stunning as the muse everyo

I was still trying to get my bearings when a familiar figure shoved his way through."Chloe, I'm here on behalf of Allen Entertainment."Just say the word, and I'll give you the best deal in the industry."Richard was finally giving me his full attention. I met his gaze without a trace of warmth. "I just started college. Why would I put my education on hold to work for you?"While Richard stood there stunned, his assistant leaned in."Sir... Ms. Sinclair was admitted to Columbia with some of the highest scores in the country."Everyone's eyes lit up even more."Looks, a killer voice, brains, and top grades. She's got it all!""Whoever signs her has struck gold!"The crowd was about to swarm me.Then Ian's voice rang out."Hold on. Let her decide for herself!"The second they saw that Hollywood legend, everyone stepped aside to make a path.Ian came up to me, overjoyed."I've searched for you for years, my muse, my leading lady. I've finally found you!"Don't worry. If you want to focus

Back at the department office, Daniel looked curiously at me, bundled up from head to toe."Chloe, it's just the two of us in here. You don't have to hide."The moment I removed my sunglasses and mask, Daniel nearly dropped his coffee. His mouth fell open, and it took him 30 seconds to find his voice."Oh my God... Chloe, now I understand why you hide your face."Then he slammed his palm on the desk and exclaimed, "We're putting together a vocal showcase for an international audience, and your voice and beauty are nothing short of divine! Would you record a performance for us?"I smiled and agreed. Then I sat at the piano and played and sang an ethereal hymn.At ten that night, the video went online.Within hours, the raw, unedited clip went viral on every major platform and passed one hundred million views."Is she real, or is this AI? How can one person have a God-given voice and an angel's face?!""Someone find the 'Columbia Muse.' I want to know her entire story in three minutes!"
