Chapter 4

Author: Sylvaren
An uncomfortable silence fell over the room.

A few guests hurried over to ease the awkwardness and invited Alexander aside to discuss business. The tension lifted only after he left.

Richard had been humiliated, and the strange looks from the other guests made him squirm. His face darkened.

My parents rushed to apologize to him.

"Richard, we're terribly sorry. When we arranged the engagement years ago, we had no idea she'd turn out to be overweight.

"Don't worry. Our families go way back. Of course we'll give you our most perfect and beautiful daughter.

"As for this fat one, we'll keep her out of sight."

I kept my hands in the pockets of my huge hoodie and said nothing.

An arrogant jerk like him? I wouldn't want him even if he were the last man on earth.

But Richard wasn't about to let me off that easily. Still seething from the humiliation, he stalked toward me. "Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair, you're too kind.

"With parents as good-looking as you two, surely she can't be that ugly, even if she's overweight, right?

"Honestly, I'm curious about the face she's hiding under that giant hoodie and mask.

"Why don't you take off the mask and the hood and let everyone see?

"We're surrounded by fashion's biggest names tonight. Who knows? Maybe someone's into bigger girls."

My parents traded an awkward look. They didn't dare answer, and they didn't dare say no.

They were terrified I'd take off my mask and reveal a face buried in fat, making them the laughingstock of Manhattan's fashion scene.

Looking at my parents, so utterly fake and selfish, I felt the last trace of affection I had for them disappear.

Their daughter was being humiliated right in front of them, yet they did not dare defend me. All they cared about was their reputation and what they stood to gain.

I didn't want to look at them another second. I turned and headed straight out to the quiet pool deck.

All I wanted was to put this rotten bunch behind me.

I'd barely reached the pool when Richard, angry and humiliated, stormed over and blocked my way.

"Trying to run away? If you hadn't shown up looking like a freak, Mr. Vance wouldn't have humiliated me!

"Pull down your hood and take off that mask! I want to see just how ugly my fiancée really is!"

I stopped and looked at him coldly. Beneath his polished appearance was an arrogant, vicious, twisted soul.

"If you think I'm not good enough for you, you don't need to see my face.

"I've got a full scholarship to Columbia. I have my own studies and my own life ahead of me. I'm in no hurry to get married.

"And a man I've never even met doesn't get to judge me."

Richard had probably never had a woman talk back to him in public. His eyes darkened.

The guests around us started whispering.

"A full scholarship to Columbia? Money can't buy you that."

"I heard she grew up on a farm in Texas, practically raised herself, and still managed to be this brilliant!"

"Your body isn't everything. Your mind says far more about who you are."

As the whispers turned in my favor, my parents' embarrassment seemed to vanish. They even looked a little proud of me, though I knew it was all for show.

Watching them, I felt only bitter contempt.

To them, I'd never been a daughter. I was an asset whose value rose and fell with what I could do for their reputation and bottom line. The moment I proved useful, their disgust disappeared.

Across the room, Isabella and Richard looked more furious by the second.

Deep, bitter jealousy flashed in Isabella's eyes, but she quickly replaced it with a look of concern.

She stepped up beside me and, in front of the guests and our parents, spoke softly.

"Getting into Columbia is impressive, of course. But as your sister, I am honestly worried about you. In Manhattan, looks can open a lot of doors for a woman. And if you really don't care about your appearance, why are you hiding under that tent of a hoodie?

"Some of Beverly Hills' top plastic surgeons and liposuction specialists are here tonight. Why don't you take off your mask and let them have a look? Even with a case as challenging as yours, I'm sure they'd be willing to help as a personal favor to me.

"You'll let them help you, won't you, sis?"

With a warm, angelic smile, she opened her arms as if to hug me.

But the moment her arms closed around me, she leaned close to my ear, and her voice turned poisonous.

"You fat pig. Let's see how long you can keep hiding. Time for everyone to see what you really look like!"

Before I could react, she shoved me straight into the pool, using the hug as cover.

When I hit the water, my baseball cap and mask were torn clean off.

I tried to swim for the surface, but my body was strangely heavy. I was sinking straight down.

Then I remembered I was still wearing all that thick foam padding.

The foam and heavy hoodie had soaked up the water and were dragging me down like rocks.

The straps securing the padding had tightened underwater, and I couldn't undo them.

Freezing water rushed into my nose. My lungs were running out of air, and my vision began to darken.

Panic and despair closed over me. Death felt terrifyingly close...

A year later, I starred in Ian's film and became famous around the world overnight. At that year's Golden Globes, I walked onstage to accept the Best Actress award. My parents had secured seats near the front, leaped up and shouted toward the cameras, "That's my daughter! Chloe Sinclair!""Baby girl, Mommy and Daddy are so proud of you!"From the stage, I gave them a brief glance and said nothing, keeping a faint smile on my face.Beside me, a well-known Hollywood host smiled and asked, "People say you're proof that God has favorites. You've got the whole world at your feet."Is there anything you'd like to say to the parents who cheered for you tonight?"I spoke calmly into the microphone."No. I have nothing to say to them. I only want to say a few words to my grandmother on her farm in Texas."Some people love a daughter only when she makes them money and makes them look good. Some people love only a beautiful face."Thank you, Grandma, for loving me unconditionally all my life. You

The officer accessed the security system right away.Soon, clear footage from the previous night was playing on the large screen. It showed Isabella creeping into the cramped dressing room in the middle of the night and slipping the diamond necklace under my mattress. The next morning, she pretended to discover it missing and called the police on me.The truth was now out in the open. The officer's face hardened, and he turned to Isabella, who was shaking."Miss Isabella, you need to rein in that malice of yours."You framed your own sister and falsely accused her. What you did is inexcusable."Our parents looked mortified. Neither could say a word in Isabella's defense. The officer turned to me, looking genuinely ashamed. "I'm very sorry, Ms. Chloe."The reported value was 500,000 dollars, making this a major theft case. That's why we followed standard procedure and went to Columbia University to bring you in for questioning. I'm sorry for taking up your time."Everyone in the room we

That afternoon, Isabella called the NYPD and reported a custom diamond necklace worth 500,000 dollars stolen. She named me as the suspect. In front of several officers, Isabella cried as she accused me."That custom diamond necklace is worth half a million dollars! Mom gave it to me for my 18th birthday."I would've given you anything you wanted. So why did you have to steal what I love most?"I watched her put on her little act, knowing she'd orchestrated the whole thing to ruin my reputation and future. She'd even made a point of inviting Richard over so he could see me at my lowest.I answered calmly."I never took it. I've never even seen it."But the lead officer emerged from the cramped dressing room I'd been staying in, a glittering diamond necklace in his hand and a stern expression on his face."Ma'am, we found this under the mattress you slept on."The officer stared at me."Do you have anything to say about that?"I frowned."If I'd stolen it, why wouldn't I have taken it wi

After Alexander dropped me off, I slept soundly. In the morning, I put on a baseball cap and a mask and went to get breakfast alone.Campus was crawling with people. Influencers, reporters, and students roamed the grounds, livestreaming on their phones and apparently searching for someone.Suddenly, a familiar shrill voice called out to me."Meatball, come here."I froze when I saw my mother waving from a few yards away. Why are they here looking for me? Have they found out the truth? But when I walked over, she barely glanced at me. She pulled out her phone, held up a screenshot from the viral video, and demanded, "You go to Columbia too. Have you seen this girl around campus?"I pressed my lips together. I didn't want to admit it was me, and I didn't want to lie either. When I didn't answer, Isabella hooked her arm through our mother's and laughed at me."Mommy, don't put her on the spot. Pretty girls hang out with other pretty girls, especially someone as stunning as the muse everyo

I was still trying to get my bearings when a familiar figure shoved his way through."Chloe, I'm here on behalf of Allen Entertainment."Just say the word, and I'll give you the best deal in the industry."Richard was finally giving me his full attention. I met his gaze without a trace of warmth. "I just started college. Why would I put my education on hold to work for you?"While Richard stood there stunned, his assistant leaned in."Sir... Ms. Sinclair was admitted to Columbia with some of the highest scores in the country."Everyone's eyes lit up even more."Looks, a killer voice, brains, and top grades. She's got it all!""Whoever signs her has struck gold!"The crowd was about to swarm me.Then Ian's voice rang out."Hold on. Let her decide for herself!"The second they saw that Hollywood legend, everyone stepped aside to make a path.Ian came up to me, overjoyed."I've searched for you for years, my muse, my leading lady. I've finally found you!"Don't worry. If you want to focus

Back at the department office, Daniel looked curiously at me, bundled up from head to toe."Chloe, it's just the two of us in here. You don't have to hide."The moment I removed my sunglasses and mask, Daniel nearly dropped his coffee. His mouth fell open, and it took him 30 seconds to find his voice."Oh my God... Chloe, now I understand why you hide your face."Then he slammed his palm on the desk and exclaimed, "We're putting together a vocal showcase for an international audience, and your voice and beauty are nothing short of divine! Would you record a performance for us?"I smiled and agreed. Then I sat at the piano and played and sang an ethereal hymn.At ten that night, the video went online.Within hours, the raw, unedited clip went viral on every major platform and passed one hundred million views."Is she real, or is this AI? How can one person have a God-given voice and an angel's face?!""Someone find the 'Columbia Muse.' I want to know her entire story in three minutes!"
