Chapter 4

Author: Asteria
My voice cracked into an uncontrollable sob.

"My eighteenth birthday was my first time, too... Yet you three didn't even give me a single blessing. You wouldn't even spare a minute to listen to me."

For a fleeting second, Dylan's expression softened, but his hesitation was quickly swallowed up by sheer impatience.

"So what? Do you have to cause a scene today of all days?"

"Clover was supposed to complete her ceremony with joy. If you hadn't thrown your selfish fit, she wouldn't have ended up in tears like that."

"Why do you always have to be so petty over every little thing when everyone else is worried sick about Clover?"

Just then, Father's stern voice cut through the air as he walked over, accompanied by Mother and Clover.

"Amelia. You made us the laughingstock of the pack today, and now you're trying to play the victim using your birthday?" His voice turned colder by the second. "Do you have any idea that because of what you did today, Clover cried so hard she almost passed out, all while begging us to show you mercy?"

Mother immediately pulled Clover into her arms. "She did absolutely nothing wrong, yet she keeps standing up for you. How can you be so heartless?"

Clover, held at the center of everyone's protection, lowered her head, her rimmed eyes red, looking utterly fragile and innocent.

As long as Clover shed a single tear, everyone would automatically assume it was my fault.

I stayed silent, but my silence only convinced Father that I was unrepentant. "Well? Apologize to your little sister right now!"

Clover gently tugged at Father's sleeve, forcing a gentle smile toward me. "Dad, it's fine. She might just be... too sad."

She stepped up to me with a soft, affectionate smile. "Amelia, I haven't had the chance to eat a Wolfheart Cake yet, and I suddenly really crave one. Could you make one for me again? The raspberry flavor like before, okay?"

Mother caught her drift instantly. The fury on her face softened into a look of relieved approval. "Clover is always the sensible one. Amelia, look how your sister is giving you an out. Thank her already! Didn't you use to love making raspberry cakes? Go make one right now."

I frowned, staring at Clover without moving an inch. "Can't you just not eat raspberries?"

The triumphant smile on Clover's face froze for a fraction of a second.

I continued, "When you were little, you insisted on eating the raspberry cake I made, ended up having trouble breathing, and broke out in hives all over your body, nearly dying. Don't you remember?"

Her face drained of all color. Yet in the very next second, she hurriedly grabbed my hand, tears instantly welling up in her eyes.

"I'm sorry, Amelia. I really forgot. I suffered such a severe head injury from that fall off the cliff when I was little, so my memory has always been hazy about certain things."

"I just suddenly really wanted to eat something you made. If I can't eat it, then forget it... as long as you stop being angry with me..."

The scandal escalated until it finally alerted the Alpha himself, who came to the Blackthorn household to deal with the situation. With indisputable evidence of Clover's crimes laid bare, the years of neglect, abuse, and cruelty my family had inflicted upon me could no longer be swept under the rug either. In front of the entire pack, the Alpha publicly banished Clover from the pack forever, forbidding any other pack from ever giving her shelter.Father was stripped of his exalted status as Beta, suspended pending an official investigation by the Council of Elders. Mother was removed from her position as Chief Healer, and Dylan was stripped of his title as a Gamma Warrior.Everything they once cherished was stripped away, a direct price paid for turning a blind eye to my suffering.Meanwhile, I opened my eyes beneath a sea of silvery moonlight.A voice echoed from far away, divine and ethereal."Amelia..."I lifted my gaze. Even though I had never seen the Moon Goddess before, I recogn

So the moment my parents returned home, she threw herself onto her knees, weeping desperately."Dad! Mom! I know Amelia's death is connected to me... I don't expect you to forgive me right away! You can punish me however you want!"Tears streamed down her cheeks in heavy torrents. "I just... I just don't want to lose you! I've been an orphan since I was little, and you were the ones who brought me home. I truly regarded this place as my real home!""That's why I was so terrified that once Amelia came back, you wouldn't want me anymore. I know what I did was wrong. I'll do whatever you tell me to do from now on!"A heavy silence lingered in the room for a long time. Clover peeked up through her lashes, convinced her soft-hearted act had worked once again.Yet my parents only stared down at her with icy indifference, without a single trace of emotion on their faces."Clover, stop fooling yourself. You're terrified of losing the Blackthorn family. You're terrified of falling from your hig

An overwhelming, suffocating pressure washed over her. She couldn't even push herself up, coughing up several mouthfuls of blood."You still have the nerve to bring her up?!" Father roared. "The Blackthorn family raised you like a precious pearl in the palm of our hands, and you turned out to be such a venomous creature!"Panicking, Clover stammered, "I... I don't know what you're talking about...""You've lied to us for so many years. Are you going to keep acting now?" Dylan threw the old phone down right in front of her face. "Look at it yourself. You disgust us."As she watched the video, her face drained of all color. Throwing the phone aside, she crawled toward them on her hands and knees, desperately trying to play the innocent victim."It's not like that! I was just joking around with Amelia! She knows best what actually happened... Call Amelia back so we can confront each other face to face…""She's never coming back!" Before Clover could finish, Mother charged forward, grabbin

Everyone was startled."Hello, is this Miss Blackthorn? Regarding the burial plot you inquired about earlier, you can reserve it by paying just a 10% deposit. Are you still interested?"Dylan's body swayed. "I remember now... So that day, she was actually looking at burial plots... She knew she was dying... Dad, Mom, we blamed Amelia all along! For all these years, we were so horribly wrong!"He finally broke down, bursting into agonizing sobs.Mother sobbed uncontrollably, "We want this plot. We owe Amelia too much. This is the very last thing we can ever do for her."Yet Martha stood firmly in front of them, blocking their way."She doesn't want to be buried here. Before she passed, Amelia told me that after her death, she wanted to return to the valley and be laid to rest alongside her grandmother."Father's face darkened."She is our daughter. Her funeral arrangements are not for a mere cook to decide.""Besides, you aren't completely blameless in this either! Why didn't you take h

Arriving at Martha's cabin, they met up with Dylan and knocked on the door.Martha opened the door, her expression devoid of any surprise.Mother's eyes were red with desperation. "Where is Amelia? Is she here? Let her come out!"When Martha didn't answer right away, Dylan grabbed her arm with force. "Where did you hide her?! Let us see her right now!"Father immediately pulled Dylan back, though he too had lost his usual composure, demanding sharply, "I am her father. Tell me, did she come here? If she is still with you, you had better hand her over, or this will be considered kidnapping."Martha looked at them with cold eyes, turning around. "Follow me."They followed her into the cabin.Martha pushed open the door to the inner room. Resting on the bed was a figure covered entirely beneath a white sheet.Father's body swayed violently. "This is..."Martha lowered her eyes. "She passed away last night. It was very peaceful.""Impossible!" Father charged forward and yanked back a corne

Clover bit her lip, putting on a pitiful act. "Dad, I... I suddenly feel unwell...""Weren't you perfectly fine just a second ago? Come, eat a little more," Mother insisted."Dad, Mom, I really feel sick... I'll go upstairs and rest for a bit, okay?"Clover hurriedly set down her fork, turning on her heel to rush upstairs."Stop right there," Father barked. "Since you feel unwell, let your mother check if you're having an allergic reaction."Clover instinctively took a step back. That subtle movement caused Mother to frown. "Clover... what exactly are you afraid of?"Father commanded coldly, "Go up to her room and bring down every single piece of medication in there. Do not leave a single bottle behind."Clover turned and bolted upstairs, frantically turning her room upside down the moment she burst inside."How can this be... It was right here. Where did it go...""Are you looking for this?" Clover whipped her head around to find Mother standing at the doorway, holding a bottle of str
