Chapter 2

Autor: Lyra Vesta
Voices downstairs woke me the next morning.

My legs were swollen. The scales had spread to just below my knees, and even turning over in bed hurt.

I pulled on a pair of loose trousers and packed the things I had set aside during the night into a box: clothes Adrian had left in my room, a silver knife Caleb had given me for protection, and a bracelet Noah had given me after my first shift.

The box wasn’t heavy, but I had to stop twice on the stairs.

Caleb and Adrian stood beside the living room sofa, surrounded by bags of supplements.

Claire was curled against Noah in a silk nightgown, holding a mug of something warm.

“The healer said these herbs cost a fortune,” she murmured, looking up at Adrian. “You shouldn’t have spent so much on me.”

Adrian squeezed her shoulder. “If they help your wolf, they’re worth it.”

Caleb stirred a spoonful of honey into her herbal tea.

“Tell me if there’s anything else you need. I’ll get it.”

Noah handed her a velvet jewelry box.

“Try this on. I thought you’d like it.”

I recognized the jeweler’s name on the lid. The bracelet he had given me had come from the same shop.

I reached the bottom of the stairs.

Adrian looked up.

“There you are. Get dressed, sweetheart. We’ll go into town after breakfast.”

I set my box on the coffee table.

“I’m already dressed.”

His eyes moved over my loose trousers and the oversized sweater hiding the pendant at my throat.

“What’s all this?”

“Things that belong to you.”

I took everything out of the box and laid it on the coffee table.

Noah picked up the bracelet.

“Why is this in here?”

“You can have it back.”

“I gave it to you.”

“I know.”

Caleb looked through the things, then at me.

“Isla, are you still upset about last night?” I hadn’t slept much. I kept remembering my mother placing the pearls in my hands, then the pain that had torn through my legs on the shore.

“No,” I said. “I’m giving you all your things back. That’s all.”

Adrian glanced at the familiar things on the table, certain I was throwing another tantrum.

He stepped forward, ready to pull me into his arms like he always did.

But I stepped back before his scent could envelop me.

“I’m going back to my room.”

Adrian stopped short, frowning at me.

“Didn’t we agree to go shopping today?”

“You suggested it. I said no.”

I turned toward the stairs.

Claire stood and caught my wrist. “Isla, please don’t fight with him because of me.”

“Let go of me.” I pulled my hand free.

She staggered backward as though I had shoved her, caught the edge of the sofa, and dropped to the floor with a cry.

Adrian rushed to her at once.

“Claire?”

“Why did you push me, Isla?” Her voice shook. “I was only trying to help.”

“I didn’t push you.”

Claire pressed a hand to her side.

“She’s still angry about the pearls. I knew she hadn’t forgiven me.”

Noah stepped between us.

“You’re better than this, Isla.”

“She grabbed me. I didn’t push her.”

“We all saw it, Isla,” he said. “Stop lying.”

I didn’t know what else to say. I looked from Caleb to Adrian, hoping one of them would speak up for me.

For a split second, that look hurt so much that I could barely breathe.

Noah glanced down at Claire, then back at me. “She’s been doing better since last night. The pearls helped her. Can’t you at least be glad about that?”

I looked at the bracelet in his hand.

He had fastened it around my wrist himself after my first shift. After my parents died, he had promised I could always come to him.

Now I couldn’t get him to listen while I stood right in front of him.

Claire let out a whimper.

Caleb hurried past me toward Claire, bumping my shoulder.

It was barely a nudge, but pain shot through my legs. They gave way beneath me.

I struck the marble floor on both knees. Pain tore through the scales beneath my trousers, sharp enough to leave me gasping.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

“Isla?”

Adrian looked over. He started to reach for me.

“I barely touched you,” Caleb said. “Claire’s in pain. Can’t you stop competing for attention?”

Just then, Claire began to whimper. “Help me. It hurts so much.”

Adrian’s hand stopped.

“We all know you’re fine. Get up on your own.”

Then he turned to Claire.

“Where does it hurt?”

“My side. I don’t know why it hurts so much. I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to cause all this.”

“It’s not your fault.” He said, then turned to Caleb. “Go get the healer.”

Noah moved the coffee table aside so Adrian could sit next to her.

I stayed on the floor, one hand pressed against my knee.

They were certain I was just jealous and upset about being ignored, that I was putting on an act for attention.

Adrian bent over Claire, listening as she described the pain. Noah brought her a glass of water. Caleb had already gone to fetch the healer.

I waited until I could breathe normally, then gripped the arm of a chair and pulled myself up.

The box was still on the table. Adrian’s jacket lay where I had left it.

I walked toward the door.

“Isla,” he called without looking up. “We’re going to have to postpone the trip.”

I stopped with my hand on the handle.

“Of course.”

Outside, I slipped my fingers beneath my sweater and found the pendant Adrian had given me. The pack’s crest was engraved on its face.

When he had fastened it around my neck, he had kissed the place where his mark would someday be.

“So everyone knows you’re my mate, and my future Luna,” he’d said.

I unfastened the chain.

For a moment, I held it in my palm. Then I dropped it into the waste bin beside the gate.

  • They Gave Her My Pearls, and Lost Me to the Sea   Chapter 9

By the next full moon, I could no longer remember Adrian’s voice.I still knew that name. I knew what he had done. But when I thought of him speaking, I heard only the words, without a sound to go with them.Caleb’s face faded next. Then Noah’s.I stopped trying to bring them back. There were new things to remember: the narrow passage through the reef where my cousins raced me, the garden outside my room, the way my grandmother always asked whether I had eaten before telling me anything else.On my nineteenth birthday, I woke and went to breakfast without thinking of land at all. My grandmother held a feast that night. After the celebration, I swam up to watch the moon rise. I didn’t know why I found the sight so beautiful. Then I noticed a man sitting on the rocks beneath a white lighthouse beyond the harbor. He was broad-shouldered, but his clothes were rumpled, his hair tangled, and his beard looked as though it hadn’t been trimmed in months.I had seen him there before.Sometimes t

Three thousand meters beneath the surface, beyond the deepest ocean trench, I swam effortlessly through the Kingdom of Blue.No sunlight reached it, but pale blue lights glowed among the coral towers. Gardens of swaying sea grass lined the stone pathways, and tiny silver fish drifted through open archways. The current had brought me here.To my home, the kingdom my family ruled. My mother had been the daughter of the ruler of this Kingdom. My grandmother, or the Blue Queen, as everyone here called her, later told me she had sensed me the moment I transformed in the sea.“I’d hoped this day would come,” she said, looking at me. “Not a single day passed when I didn’t miss your mother and wish I could meet you.”I learned then that my mother, a princess of the royal family of Blue, had broken an ancient taboo by falling in love with my father, a creature of the land, a werewolf. My grandmother could have helped her take human form, but the royal family had seen their union as a disgrace

Adrian still believed there was something he could do.He sent another boat beyond the outer reef, looking for deep-sea pearls and ordered a lighthouse built beside the harbor, hoping its light would guide me home.Caleb went through everything our mother had left behind, looking for a name, a place, anything she might not have told me. Noah returned to the pack archives.A week later, Noah brought them to an elder who remembered the old stories about the sea.Adrian told her what had happened and placed a deep-sea pearl on her table.“If we find her, can we give her this?”The elder looked at the pearl for a long time.“Not anymore,” she said.Caleb leaned forward.“Our mother said a pearl could keep her on land.”“Keep her there,” the elder replied. “Not bring her back after the change.”Adrian pushed the pearl closer.“There must be something else.”“Nothing I can offer you.”“Then find someone who can,” Adrian demanded.“Adrian.” The elder looked him directly in the eye. “You will

The search went on for seven days.Boats crossed the outer reef. Divers searched beneath the rocks. At night, floodlights swept the water while Adrian stood at the railing, calling my name. But they found nothing. On the seventh evening, they returned.Claire rose from the sofa as they entered. A blanket slipped from her shoulders.“Adrian.”She hurried toward him, her eyes filling with tears.“I was so worried. Nobody would tell me anything.”He did not open his arms.Claire stopped in front of him.“I heard what happened to Isla. I’m so sorry. If she hadn’t been so upset about the pearls…”“Upset?”His voice made her hesitate.“I only meant… she shouldn’t have gone into the water like that.”“We sent her,” Caleb said.Claire glanced at him, then reached for Adrian’s hand.“I know. And you were only trying to help me.”Adrian pulled his hand away.“You said you wouldn’t survive the night.”“The healer… he found another treatment.”“Then why did you tell us the pearls were your only ch

The sea closed over my head. The pain vanished. My skin no longer burned, and I could breathe freely. I stretched my tail and let it carry me through the water, faster than I had ever swum before.I turned upward and broke the surface beside the boat. All three of them were still at the railing.Adrian stepped forward, his hand outstretched.“Isla!”Caleb sank to his knees on the deck.“No…” He shook his head. “No, that can’t be true…”Noah gripped the railing. His mouth opened, but nothing came out.A wave lifted me. My silver-blue tail curved beneath the surface, bright in the moonlight.Their eyes followed it.“She was telling the truth,” Adrian whispered.I looked at him one last time. Then I dived.A splash followed before I had gone far.Adrian.He drove through the water with the strength of his wolf, closing the distance in a few powerful strokes.“Isla, wait!”I stopped beneath the surface. He swam over me, searching the dark water. I could see the bloodless strain around his

I spent the night drifting in and out of sleep.Whenever I closed my eyes, I heard the sea. Beneath the blankets, my legs twitched together. Trying to move them separately sent pain through my knees.Voices outside my door woke me after noon.“I saw her in the hallway last night,” Claire said through her tears. “She was heading toward the stairs. I think she was trying to leave.”“She said she would go,” Adrian replied.“She still thinks I took everything from her. She doesn’t want to help me.” Claire sobbed. “Please don’t make her. I couldn’t bear it if she hated me anymore.”I sat up slowly and looked at the calendar.Today.My eighteenth birthday. My last day on land. The door opened before I could get out of bed.Adrian came in, followed by Caleb and Noah.“Were you planning to leave?” Adrian asked.“I went to get some water.”“Claire saw you,” Caleb said.“Then she saw me getting water.”Adrian stepped toward the bed.“Please wait outside,” I said. “I need to get dressed.”“All ri
