Chapter 3

Author: Pebble
My parents were waiting at the restaurant entrance. When Jocelyn got out of the car, they went over to hug her, smiling.

But when they saw me, their smiles froze.

"What are you doing here?"

Realizing how that sounded, they quickly backtracked. "What we mean is, where did you disappear to this afternoon? We looked everywhere for you."

They didn't sound convinced themselves, and I didn't call them on it.

When we were little, my sister took my doll, and my parents told me not to make a fuss.

I ran out angry. By the time I came back, they'd finished dinner.

My mother brought me a plate of leftovers and called me selfish. She said I'd worried everyone and they'd spent ages out looking for me.

I didn't say anything. I forced down the leftovers despite the lump in my throat.

I'd been crouching by the front door the whole time. All they'd had to do was open it to see me.

That was the day I accepted that my parents didn't love me.

At the table, Jocelyn took the seat in the middle.

I was about to sit down next to Garrett when my mother stopped me.

"Move down. Let Garrett sit with your sister so he can look after her."

Garrett spoke up too. "Evelyn, sit over there. There's a seat free."

I looked where he was pointing. It was a seat at the far corner of the table, where I could barely reach the food.

By the time I turned back, they were all seated.

There was nowhere else to sit.

I said nothing and sat in the corner.

Not long after they ordered, the food came out.

Nashville hot chicken, Buffalo cauliflower, shrimp in spicy tomato sauce...

Every dish on that table had chili in it. Everything was just as spicy as Jocelyn liked it.

Ever since I was little, spicy food had hurt my throat. I couldn't eat it.

So I put down my fork and was about to ask the server for a plate of shrimp without the chili.

My mother looked taken aback and quickly stopped me.

"There's shrimp right there. Why order another plate of it?"

"I can't eat spicy food."

Garrett stopped peeling shrimp and looked across the table.

"I remember you eating spicy food before. Why didn't you say something sooner?"

He was thinking of the first lunch he'd ever packed for me. He'd put chili in it.

I didn't want to disappoint him, so I ate it anyway.

That day, my throat became so inflamed and swollen that I couldn't speak.

He cried as he apologized and promised he would always remember that I couldn't eat spicy food.

His "always" had lasted all of five years.

I was about to explain.

But he had already turned away. He put the peeled shrimp in Jocelyn's bowl and lovingly ruffled her hair.

I closed my mouth again.

What would explaining have changed?

My mother had the server bring a bowl of plain water. She dropped a few shrimp in, swirled them around, and tossed them onto my plate.

"Just rinse them off. Why order a whole other plate? What makes you so special?

"Why can't you be more like your sister? Jocelyn has never given us a moment's worry."

I wanted to tell her why Jocelyn never gave them a moment's worry.

They made every decision based on what she liked.

They never considered me at all.

But I stopped myself before the words came out.

What good would defending myself do?

They would only think I was making a fuss again, picking fights over every little thing.

I peeled one of the shrimp my mother had rinsed and tossed onto my plate.

I took a bite. It was still so spicy that my throat stung.

I gulped down water until the pain eased a little.

My mother glanced over.

"See? You can eat it. You were just making a fuss. Good thing I didn't give in."

I said nothing. I set the fork aside and drank my water.

Garrett's POVWhen Garrett drove back to the house, Evelyn's parents were cleaning up after the workers in the newly redone master bedroom and the small room beside it.The curtains and bedding in the master bedroom were sky blue, Jocelyn's favorite color. The vanity had been custom-built for her.The small bedroom that was supposed to be Evelyn's study was now a walk-in closet filled with Jocelyn's clothes and dresses. The books that had been there had been dumped outside the door.Evelyn's mother put the broom away and saw Garrett and Jocelyn come in with shopping bags. She looked past them."Where's Evelyn? The bridal shop just delivered the dress. They want her to try it on so they can alter it if it doesn't fit."Garrett stopped loosening his tie."She isn't back yet?"He looked around, then pushed open the doors of the other two bedrooms. Both empty. No sign of her. He'd only just calmed down. Now his anxiety was rising again.Evelyn's mother looked confused."No. Weren't the two

"Garrett, which looks better, blue or white?"Normally, seeing her struggle to choose, he'd have said, "Take both," without thinking twice. Now his mind was elsewhere. When he didn't respond, Jocelyn called his name again, puzzled. "Garrett?"Garrett snapped out of it and put his phone in his pocket. He glanced at the two coats she was holding. Then he looked at the rack and spotted a pink one.He pointed to it without thinking."Get the pink one. Evelyn likes pink."Jocelyn's ey

An hour later, they were just about done eating.I was about to stand when another message came in from Harold."I've landed. Where are you?"I sent him my location, and he replied right away. "Wait for me."I put the phone away and saw that they weren't leaving yet.As I wondered what they were waiting for, the door to our private dining room opened. A server carried in a box and set it in front of Jocelyn. She looked genuinely surprised.Garrett smiled as he opened it.When Jocelyn saw what was inside, she threw her arms around Garrett and kissed his cheek in delight."Garrett, how did you know I wanted a dog? I love this surprise!"Garrett hugged her back. "How could I forget anything you tell me?"Beside them, my parents beamed. The four of them looked like a happy, loving family. And I wasn't part of it.The puppy came out of the box and ran to my feet.I quickly covered my nose and kept trying to shoo it away. I went back to the rental and started packing. Before long, I heard a key turn in the front door.Garrett came in with a moving crew.He told them to start loading the truck. When I came out of the bedroom, surprise crossed his face."Weren't you at the new house? When did you get back?"He hadn't even noticed when I left.I answered flatly, "Not long ago.""Good, then. There's something I want to tell you."Garrett pulled me aside."From now on, the master bedroom and the small room next to it belong to Jocelyn. Don't go into either room without asking her. You need to respect her space."For a second, I froze. Then I laughed.I was supposed to be his mate, yet I didn't even deserve the master bedroom.Garrett rushed to justify himself, looking guilty."If you hadn't made her cry, none of this would be happening. This is mostly your fault."Let her have those two rooms to make up for it. Evelyn, don't be difficult about this."I looked at him for a long time and couldn't say anything.
