Chapter 4

Author: Mint Rose
The crowd grew livelier by the minute. Neighbors came over and started to strike up a conversation with Mom, Dad, and Ethan. No one noticed me.

This was my best chance. With so many people around, I could quietly slip away and make my way to that unfinished, abandoned building.

I took a deep breath, clenched my bleeding hands, and was just about to head toward the building.

But just then, Mom, Dad, and Ethan's voices drifted into my ears. Each word I heard stabbed straight into my heart like a sharp blade.

Mom spoke first in a voice tinged with concern. "Where did Eva go? Why is she suddenly gone?"

Ethan's voice followed, sounding as though he was trying to defend me. "Cut her some slack. She probably just feels overwhelmed by the crowd and went somewhere nearby to get some fresh air. She'll be back in a little while."

Then, Dad's voice suddenly rose, and it carried restrained anger. Clearly, Ethan's words had enraged him.

He said contemptuously, "Cut her some slack? Now you're speaking up for her. If you hadn't insisted on dating that girl, your sister wouldn't have been sent to that place! If you'd just broken up with her back then, we would never have sent her there.

"You never spoke up for her back then. Now only you finally got around to doing it."

Dad's words struck me like a bolt of lightning, leaving my entire body rigid. It felt as though the blood in my veins had run cold instantly.

Dad boomed, "If not for the fact that you were the only boy in this family, it wouldn't have been Eva who was sent there. It would have been you!"

The words pierced into my heart like a knife, twisting inside me until every organ seemed to ache.

So, that was what happened.

It wasn't because I'd said "goodbye" to a male classmate. It wasn't because I didn't know how to behave as a girl. I'd been sent to that hell simply because of my own brother, simply because he refused to break up with his girlfriend.

They hadn't sent me to that place to correct my behavior. They had sent me there to make an example of me—to send Ethan a warning.

I was nothing more than a tool to them, a pawn they used to discipline their son. For my parents, those two weeks of torment—those days when living felt worse than dying—were nothing more than a warning meant for Ethan.

I stood frozen, feeling cold from head to toe. Even breathing hurt.

I wanted to laugh. I wanted to laugh out loud at my own stupidity and at how I'd still hoped for their love. I'd ridiculously believed they'd merely been brainwashed, and that they genuinely thought they were doing what was best for me.

But before I could even pull my lips into a smile, tears had already begun falling. They fell onto the cold ground and scattered into even tinier droplets.

The fireworks continued exploding around me. Their multicolored light illuminated everyone's faces, but the cheerful faces that had seemed so happy moments ago suddenly became grotesque in my eyes.

They eerily resembled the faces of the instructors at the boot camp. Every one of them wore a hypocritical smile as they pushed me toward hell.

I could no longer hold myself together. The anguish and pain in my chest were tearing me apart. I shoved past the people around me, stumbling my way out of the crowd before running desperately toward the unfinished building, where hardly anyone ever went.

Behind me, fireworks continued exploding, each one louder than the last. Their colorful light illuminated my fleeing figure as the wind howled past my ears, carrying a bone-chilling cold.

I ran all the way to the rooftop of the unfinished building. Gripping the cold railing, I looked at the fireworks filling the distant sky, then toward the direction of that so-called "home".

I felt no attachment. I didn't feel reluctant to let go. There was only an overwhelming sense of release.

At the instant a firework exploded in the sky and illuminated the entire rooftop with its light, I closed my eyes and stepped forward.

Mom and Dad sat on the couch, staring at my photograph and softly murmuring my name. Their lonely eyes were full of longing.I floated in front of them, looking at their graying hair and exhausted faces. In a soft voice, I said, "Dad, Mom, I'm leaving."They couldn't hear me, but I still wanted to say it. I wanted to let them know that I no longer blamed them, and that I was going somewhere without pain or suffering.I wanted to tell them that I hoped they would take good care of themselves from now on and stop living in regret. If we ever had a next life, we shouldn't be a family again. I hoped they would have a sensible child. I hoped I would have a warm home with parents who would protect me, understand me, and love me.I floated out of the apartment and out of the city. The home behind me grew farther and farther away. So did those painful memories and everything I'd been through. Floating high above the city, I looked down at the streets below, at that unfinished building,

Dad picked up the note. Ethan's crooked handwriting was blurred with tear stains. He had written, "Mom, Dad, I'm leaving. I was responsible for Eva's death. I can't stay here or face either of you. I don't know how to face Eva, either. I'll go somewhere no one knows me and spend the rest of my life repenting. Take care of yourselves. I'm sorry."Dad's hand shook, and the note slipped to the floor."Ethan… Ethan is gone..." His voice was filled with utter despair.Mom rushed in. The moment she saw the note on the floor, her vision went black, and she nearly fainted again.Their daughter was gone. And now, their son was gone too. Our family had completely fallen apart. The home that had once been filled with noise and laughter now held only the two of them. They remained in that empty house, surrounded by endless regret and despair.Ethan left without giving them any way to contact him. No one knew where he had gone. Mom and Dad spent the entire night sitting in the living room. They said nothing. There was only endless silence and regret.By the time the sky was fully light, the snow had stopped. Sunlight streamed through the windows and fell across the cold food on the table and the chunky envelopes. Sadly, it brought not the slightest warmth. There was no laughter or family reunion this New Year. Instead, there was only endless sorrow and despair. They had lost me, the lively, adorable little girl who had once followed them everywhere. And they had brought all of this upon themselves.Over the next few days, the atmosphere was stifling in our home.Mom and Dad were busy making arrangements for my funeral. Their faces were completely drained of color, and their eyes were completely bloodshot. They looked utterly haggard. The neighbors all learned what had happened to me. Some felt sorry for me, and some sympathized with my family. Others whispered among themselves that my parents had been f

I had pleaded fearfully, "Dad, I'm sorry. I promise I'll never talk to male classmates again. Please don't send me there, okay?"Back then, all he'd thought was that I was being unreasonable and immature. He yanked his hand away from mine and ruthlessly pushed me through the doors to the boot camp.He could never have imagined what kind of living hell lay beyond those doors.Mom remembered how I'd eaten mechanically without enjoying the food after I'd come home. My eyes were dark and lifeless. It was as if I'd become a completely different person. She had assumed I simply hadn't adjusted to coming back yet. She'd even planned to send me back after the New Year holiday.Never did it cross her mind that I'd already been tortured to the point where dying felt better than staying alive, and that I'd already begun thinking about ending my life. They always said they were doing it for my own good. But they had destroyed my entire life with their so-called "love". At the age when my li

The forensic examiner walked over and looked at my family, who were all sobbing uncontrollably. His voice was heavy as he spoke. "The deceased, Eva Norton, died from a fall from a great height. The preliminary estimate puts her time of death at around 10:00 pm tonight."He paused, his eyes sweeping over my body before continuing. "However, there are extensive injuries all over the body. They vary in age and are scattered across her limbs and torso. There are clear signs of physical assault, as well as indications that she had been restrained and abused. None of these injuries were caused by the fall."The forensic examiner's words sent a shockwave through the morgue.Dad's sobbing stopped abruptly. He jerked his head up and stared at the examiner, his eyes filled with disbelief. He blurted, "What did you say? Injuries? Abuse? That's impossible! She was only at that boot camp for two weeks. How could she have these injuries?"The forensic examiner took out a preliminary examinati

The police officer's words sent a shock through the silent living room. The air instantly froze. All the color drained from Mom's face. She swayed and fell backward, but Ethan quickly caught her around the waist. His own body was trembling too.Mom's voice was barely a whisper as she repeated over and over, "That's impossible... You got the wrong person. That's not Eva. It can't be..."Dad grabbed the police officer's arm, his knuckles turning white. His voice was harsh and filled with hysterical disbelief. "How do you police officers do your jobs? My daughter just went out to get some air. How could she possibly have fallen from a building? You must have gotten her identity wrong!"The officer frowned and pulled his arm free, his tone stern. "We verified her identity and contacted the forensic examiner at the scene. There is no mistake. Please come with us to identify the body."Dad froze. The fury slowly drained from his face, replaced by stunned disbelief. His lips parted, bu
