Chapter 6

Autor: Wolf Cloud
I nodded.

"Yes."

The clerk looked like she couldn't quite understand.

Gideon Whitaker wasn't exactly a dazzling name, but it was a lot nicer than something as painfully common as Michael Davis.

What she didn't know was that common was exactly what I wanted.

The more common the name, the lower the chances of being found.

There had to be tens of thousands of Michael Davises across the country, and every day plenty of them boarded flights to every corner of the world.

That would make it much easier for me to disappear.

When the clerk finished processing everything, she handed me a receipt.

"Your new ID will take effect in a week, along with the expedited passport. After that, you can start living under your new name."

I nodded and put the receipt away.

"Thank you."

When I walked out of the service center, I felt lighter than I ever had.

Even the air seemed to carry the scent of freedom.

Now that I'd let go of everything, I felt a kind of ease I'd never known.

Letting go had set me free.

That evening, when Marissa got home from work, even she could tell I was in a good mood.

She smiled and reached out to hug me.

"Did something good happen, Gideon?"

I just smiled.

"You'll find out in a week."

Marissa raised an eyebrow and smiled.

"Perfect timing. I've got something good to tell you too."

"Oh, yeah?"

I wasn't interested. I brushed her off and dodged her affection.

But Marissa wouldn't let it go and followed me.

"Aren't you going to ask?"

Of course I didn't need to ask. I'd been reborn.

In a week it would be my birthday. To celebrate, Marissa had booked us an Alaska cruise out of Vancouver.

We'd spent two wonderful days on board, watching the sunrise, the seagulls, the whales.

On the third day, the ship went down.

Right up until the moment before I was reborn, I'd firmly believed she loved me.

Then I'd heard her last words before she died—asking me to take care of Elliot and their child.

Marissa didn't notice how cold I was. She kept coaxing me gently.

"Your birthday's in a week. I've got a really special gift for you."

I wasn't interested.

"Okay."

"Gideon, aren't you excited?"

I gave her one flat word.

"Sure."

What I was really thinking was that I wasn't excited at all. No matter how good the gift, if it came from the wrong person, it meant nothing.

The new ID would take a week. In that week, I needed to get myself in good shape. After all, I'd have several connecting flights ahead of me, and long-haul travel takes a lot out of you.

I made myself a nutritious dinner: meat, eggs, dairy, all of it.

A pot of chicken soup was simmering on the stove, something hearty to build my strength back up.

Marissa saw it and looked pleasantly surprised.

"Baby, are you getting yourself in shape... for some quality time with me?"

I smiled and didn't answer.

Marissa took that as a yes and lit up. She wrapped her arms around me from behind, and her lips found the side of my neck, trailing back and forth, a clear invitation.

"I asked the doctor today. I'm past the three-month mark, so it's actually safe now. Tonight, maybe we could... hmm?"

The wet touch on my neck made my skin crawl, like a cold snake slithering over me. I quickly pushed her away.

Marissa tried to get close again, but her phone suddenly rang.

She finally let go of me and shot me a wary look.

"Um... it's a client. Gideon, I'm going to step out and take this."

"Sure."

I knew it was Elliot calling. But I no longer cared.

Right then, my own phone buzzed with a meaningless notification.

Out of habit, I scrolled through social media and saw that ten minutes earlier, Elliot had posted a photo carousel.

[Elliot: Spent all day cooking up a feast. Wish I had someone to share it with.]

Every photo was a different dish. I skimmed through them. Almost all of them were Marissa's favorites.

Soon Marissa came back from her call.

She explained apologetically.

"Gideon, I'm sorry. A big client's coming in, and I have to go entertain them. I'll spend tomorrow night with you, okay?"

I nodded again.

"Sure."

Marissa hugged me and kissed me.

"You're the best, Gideon."

After she left, I calmly ate the healthy dinner I'd made for myself.

An hour later, when I figured the timing was about right, I put my phone away, called a cab, and headed straight for Elliot's place.

When I rang the doorbell, I heard Elliot's irritated voice.

"Wh-who is it? Coming by now? Great timing..."

I smiled coldly and raised my voice.

"It's me, Gideon. Marissa's out at a work dinner, and the food in your post looked amazing, so I came to mooch some."

"I don't know you, but I know him. Stay away from him!"After lashing out, Marissa turned to Gideon and started sweet-talking him. But all she got in return was cold distance. He wouldn't even look at her.Margot saw clearly where Gideon stood. She carefully set his easel aside, then shoved Marissa back as she tried to get close to him.The two of them grappled. Margot was strong from years of working out, and she won easily.Marissa's body had long since been hollowed out by the alcohol she'd been drowning herself in. She stumbled and fell to the ground. She couldn't fight back. She didn't even have the strength to get up.Seeing that, Margot didn't bother kicking her while she was down. She simply stood protectively beside the man she loved and warned Marissa from above."His name is Michael Davis. He's my fiancé, and we're getting married soon. If you come after him again, I won't hesitate to call the police. Or to teach you a lesson you won't forget!"She walked away without

So they really had met before, more than once. He just didn't remember.Margot had been a year behind him at university, and she'd had a crush on him even back then. But at the time, he'd been head over heels for Marissa and had eyes for no one else."I thought we just weren't meant to be," she said with a bittersweet smile. "I never imagined I'd run into you on the beach."I'm on vacation, but I've stayed in touch with my friends back home, and they told me some big news. You and Marissa are over. So if that's the case, would you give me a chance to be your girlfriend?"Gideon never imagined that such sincere feelings had been waiting for him in the shadows all these years. It would be a lie to say he wasn't moved. But he'd only just been through something devastating, and jumping straight into a new relationship was asking too much.Fortunately, Margot had never planned to push him. She just asked, as eager as ever, "Could we have dinner together?"Gideon's mind was in turmoil

Seeing Gideon puzzling over the decorations, Margot explained in a soft voice."It's my grandmother's birthday today. We're throwing her a big birthday party, so a lot of family and friends are here."It suddenly made sense to Gideon."So having me paint your grandmother's portrait is your birthday gift for her? That's... actually pretty unique."His earlier doubts vanished.Margot seemed like the type who warmed up to people fast. Even though they'd only just met, she talked to him as if they were old friends."It's part of the gift. I'd like to ask you a favor. Would you come meet my grandmother with me first?"Gideon agreed without a second thought. Naturally, if he was going to paint her portrait, he needed to meet her. But it was obviously not going to be that simple.Instead of taking him to the living room or somewhere like that, Margot led him deeper into the estate. She opened a door to what was clearly a private suite and introduced him with great enthusiasm to her gr

The woman quickly reached out to steady the easel and explained with a smile."Don't worry, I'm not here to accuse you of anything. This is a public place. You're free to draw whatever you like. You just seemed so approachable, so I got curious whether that was me."Up close, Gideon couldn't help noticing her great figure, and his face started to burn. He answered honestly."It is."The woman studied the unfinished drawing carefully for a while, nodded in appreciation, then made a request."Your figure work is really polished. Would you be willing to paint a portrait of my grandmother? I know it's forward to ask when we've only just met, but you can think it over before you decide. Here's my card. I'm Margot Leclair, and I'm staying at a resort estate nearby."Before she'd even finished, she pulled a business card from the pocket of the jacket draped over her shoulders and handed it to him. Besides her name, it listed her title and her company. They were strangers who had only j

The driver ahead, forced to slam on the brakes, rolled down the window and yelled at her furiously."Do you even know how to drive? The light's red! Nice car, but there's nothing upstairs. One of these days your luck's going to run out!"Marissa had never been even-tempered, not since she was a kid. If anyone dared badmouth her behind her back and she found out, they'd regret it. But this time she was clearly in the wrong, and she was so drained she had nothing left. All she could do was sit there in a daze and wait for him to finish. But after a couple more insults, the man suddenly sounded surprised."Hey, aren't you the Langford Group CEO? Marissa Langford?"Marissa was caught off guard. She rarely appeared on business shows and barely had any public profile. How could some random stranger recognize her?"You know who I am?"The man chuckled."Who doesn't know the famous Marissa Langford? Sneaking around with her husband's best friend behind his back, sweet-talking him with

To be fair, Naomi had a lot going for her. If she'd ever been single and dating, she'd have had no shortage of interest. On top of that, she was completely devoted. She'd never gotten too close to any man other than Elliot.Marissa never imagined Elliot had come after her for such a ridiculous reason. She stood frozen in place, struck speechless. So all that irresistible charm she thought she had was fake. The reason he'd chosen her had nothing to do with her. It was all about getting back at Gideon. Now that Gideon had walked away on his own, nothing he'd done meant anything anymore, so naturally he stopped pretending.Elliot unleashed all his spite toward Gideon right in front of her, without a shred of restraint."Every time I thought about how I was stuck living a lonely life while he got to be happily in love, I went crazy with jealousy. So I made up my mind to take the thing he cared about most. And now it looks like I won!"He'd proven to himself that he was more "irresi
