Chapter 5

Autor: Wolf Cloud
Marissa didn't come home that night.

I'd seen it coming.

I started methodically planning the rest of my life.

My clothes and shoes went to a charity.

Everyday household items I simply threw out.

A while back, I'd come across a post about an island—beautiful scenery, a mild climate, quiet stretches of coastline far from the busy tourist districts.

Getting there the way I planned meant several connecting flights, which suited me fine. The fewer obvious trails I left, the better.

I chose it as the place where I'd live from now on.

I even went online and bought a few brightly colored shirts and shorts to match the island vibe.

They were the complete opposite of the low-key, plain clothes I usually wore.

When I was done, I sat on the edge of the bed and zoned out for a while.

I looked around the bedroom.

Everywhere I looked, there was proof that Marissa and I had loved each other.

Even the comforter on our bed was the one from our wedding.

When I looked up, I saw our wedding portrait hanging on the wall.

She was in a pure white wedding gown, her eyes full of happiness and sweetness. I was lifting her high into the air, my eyes full of tender devotion.

I gave a sarcastic laugh, then hurled the portrait to the floor and smashed it to pieces.

...

At seven the next morning, the charity people arrived.

I handed over everything I'd packed.

One of the workers looked a little worried.

"Sir, are you moving?"

I shook my head.

"Then... are you getting divorced?"

I smiled.

"Something like that."

Maybe because I'd donated so much, they were grateful.

"Sir, is there anything we can do for you?"

I thought about it, then brought out the shattered wedding portrait.

"Could you throw this out for me on your way?"

After that, I sat on the couch and turned on the morning news.

Marissa came home at eight-thirty.

When she saw me, surprise and panic flashed across her face.

"Gideon, why are you up so early? Don't you always sleep until nine?"

"I had a nightmare, so I just got up."

Marissa came over and wrapped her arms around me from behind.

"What did my Gideon dream about?"

"I dreamed you fell in love with Elliot," I said softly. "The two of you were tangled up in bed, having the time of your lives."

The moment the words left my mouth, the body holding me went rigid.

I felt the change and laughed lightly.

"Scary, right?"

There were faint shadows under Marissa's eyes, and her eyes were a little puffy.

It was obvious she'd had quite a night.

She wasn't even wearing makeup, and she looked exhausted.

She still carried a faint trace of men's cologne, and the unmistakable smell of what they'd been doing.

Looked like the two of them had really enjoyed themselves last night.

She held me tighter.

"Dreams aren't real. They don't make sense. You can't take them seriously."

I pushed her away.

"Dreams can be warnings. Maybe this one's trying to tell me something?"

Marissa sighed.

"Gideon, if you're mad at me over a dream, that's really not fair to me."

Then she smiled and changed the subject.

"What does my baby want for breakfast? I'll make it."

She went to the kitchen and, with practiced ease, took a few slices of toast, two eggs, and some meat and vegetables out of the fridge.

"How about scrambled eggs? Or do you want a sandwich?"

I stood up and looked at her.

"Marissa, do you love me?"

"Of course I love you."

"Then could you ever fall in love with another man?"

Her smile faded a little. She didn't answer directly, just looked down and kept working on the food.

"Stop overthinking it, baby. It was just a dream. We're so good together, and I'm pregnant now. From here on, it's going to be the three of us, living a good life, okay?"

I answered her silently. You'll have your family of three. It just won't include me.

I refused to be a fool kept in the dark.

Ding-ding—

Her phone went off again.

Marissa glanced at it, switched off the screen, and slipped it back into her pocket.

"Work again?" I asked.

Marissa mumbled, "Mm."

"Then go. Don't let me hold up anything important."

Marissa kissed my hair.

"Be good and stop overthinking. I'll order breakfast from that bakery you love, okay? Your wife has to go build her empire."

What she didn't know was that I had another identity: Cloudline, a well-known illustrator online.

On paper, I'd been an ordinary guy all these years. In reality, I'd created a huge body of work and built a massive following online.

My artwork sold for a lot. That alone was enough to keep me comfortable for half my life.

Marissa put on her coat and left.

As soon as she was gone, I turned on the computer again.

[Bad Dog: I feel completely drained...]

[Marissa: Rest up for the next two weeks. Eat plenty of oysters and steak. By the time I'm back from the trip with Gideon, you'll be good as new.]

[Bad Dog: Okay. I'll be a good boy and wait for Master to come home. (puppy-eyes emoji)]

A little let down, I closed the computer. I didn't even bother saving the chat.

I'd thought he'd send more photos or videos.

Turns out it was just some boring texts.

How dull.

When I'd sorted through my clothes the night before, I'd made a point of keeping one white shirt for my ID photo.

I changed into it and went to the provincial registry office.

The clerk double-checked with me.

"Mr. Gideon Whitaker, you're sure you want to change your name to... Michael Davis?"

"I don't know you, but I know him. Stay away from him!"After lashing out, Marissa turned to Gideon and started sweet-talking him. But all she got in return was cold distance. He wouldn't even look at her.Margot saw clearly where Gideon stood. She carefully set his easel aside, then shoved Marissa back as she tried to get close to him.The two of them grappled. Margot was strong from years of working out, and she won easily.Marissa's body had long since been hollowed out by the alcohol she'd been drowning herself in. She stumbled and fell to the ground. She couldn't fight back. She didn't even have the strength to get up.Seeing that, Margot didn't bother kicking her while she was down. She simply stood protectively beside the man she loved and warned Marissa from above."His name is Michael Davis. He's my fiancé, and we're getting married soon. If you come after him again, I won't hesitate to call the police. Or to teach you a lesson you won't forget!"She walked away without

So they really had met before, more than once. He just didn't remember.Margot had been a year behind him at university, and she'd had a crush on him even back then. But at the time, he'd been head over heels for Marissa and had eyes for no one else."I thought we just weren't meant to be," she said with a bittersweet smile. "I never imagined I'd run into you on the beach."I'm on vacation, but I've stayed in touch with my friends back home, and they told me some big news. You and Marissa are over. So if that's the case, would you give me a chance to be your girlfriend?"Gideon never imagined that such sincere feelings had been waiting for him in the shadows all these years. It would be a lie to say he wasn't moved. But he'd only just been through something devastating, and jumping straight into a new relationship was asking too much.Fortunately, Margot had never planned to push him. She just asked, as eager as ever, "Could we have dinner together?"Gideon's mind was in turmoil

Seeing Gideon puzzling over the decorations, Margot explained in a soft voice."It's my grandmother's birthday today. We're throwing her a big birthday party, so a lot of family and friends are here."It suddenly made sense to Gideon."So having me paint your grandmother's portrait is your birthday gift for her? That's... actually pretty unique."His earlier doubts vanished.Margot seemed like the type who warmed up to people fast. Even though they'd only just met, she talked to him as if they were old friends."It's part of the gift. I'd like to ask you a favor. Would you come meet my grandmother with me first?"Gideon agreed without a second thought. Naturally, if he was going to paint her portrait, he needed to meet her. But it was obviously not going to be that simple.Instead of taking him to the living room or somewhere like that, Margot led him deeper into the estate. She opened a door to what was clearly a private suite and introduced him with great enthusiasm to her gr

The woman quickly reached out to steady the easel and explained with a smile."Don't worry, I'm not here to accuse you of anything. This is a public place. You're free to draw whatever you like. You just seemed so approachable, so I got curious whether that was me."Up close, Gideon couldn't help noticing her great figure, and his face started to burn. He answered honestly."It is."The woman studied the unfinished drawing carefully for a while, nodded in appreciation, then made a request."Your figure work is really polished. Would you be willing to paint a portrait of my grandmother? I know it's forward to ask when we've only just met, but you can think it over before you decide. Here's my card. I'm Margot Leclair, and I'm staying at a resort estate nearby."Before she'd even finished, she pulled a business card from the pocket of the jacket draped over her shoulders and handed it to him. Besides her name, it listed her title and her company. They were strangers who had only j

The driver ahead, forced to slam on the brakes, rolled down the window and yelled at her furiously."Do you even know how to drive? The light's red! Nice car, but there's nothing upstairs. One of these days your luck's going to run out!"Marissa had never been even-tempered, not since she was a kid. If anyone dared badmouth her behind her back and she found out, they'd regret it. But this time she was clearly in the wrong, and she was so drained she had nothing left. All she could do was sit there in a daze and wait for him to finish. But after a couple more insults, the man suddenly sounded surprised."Hey, aren't you the Langford Group CEO? Marissa Langford?"Marissa was caught off guard. She rarely appeared on business shows and barely had any public profile. How could some random stranger recognize her?"You know who I am?"The man chuckled."Who doesn't know the famous Marissa Langford? To be fair, Naomi had a lot going for her. If she'd ever been single and dating, she'd have had no shortage of interest. On top of that, she was completely devoted. She'd never gotten too close to any man other than Elliot.Marissa never imagined Elliot had come after her for such a ridiculous reason. She stood frozen in place, struck speechless. So all that irresistible charm she thought she had was fake. The reason he'd chosen her had nothing to do with her. It was all about getting back at Gideon. Now that Gideon had walked away on his own, nothing he'd done meant anything anymore, so naturally he stopped pretending.Elliot unleashed all his spite toward Gideon right in front of her, without a shred of restraint."Every time I thought about how I was stuck living a lonely life while he got to be happily in love, I went crazy with jealousy. So I made up my mind to take the thing he cared about most. And now it looks like I won!"He'd proven to himself that he was more "irresi
