Chapter 1

Author: Jasmine Flower
My mother stared at the unsigned bond papers in confusion.

After a moment, she looked up at Rowan Vale and asked carefully, “Are you claiming Clara?”

I was Clara Hart.

The question made sense. Rowan and I had grown up together, and everyone in Silver Ridge Pack had always assumed that, sooner or later, its Alpha would claim me. Once, I had believed that too.

Now I knew better.

I was still looking at the papers when Rowan gave a small nod and said, “If it’s Clara, I can accept the claim.”

My mother frowned. “That isn’t an answer. Are you naming her or not?”

Rowan’s expression did not change.

“It means,” he said, “I can bond with Clara.”

That was enough.

“I won’t,” I said.

Silence fell over the room.

In my first life, he had answered the same way. I had mistaken that careful, distant wording for restraint and pushed my mother to accept before he could change his mind.

That mistake cost me eight years.

At first, life in the Alpha house of Silver Ridge Pack seemed normal enough. The only thing I could never keep up with was carrying litter after litter. Rowan always said he wanted a strong bloodline, enough heirs to secure Silver Ridge Pack, enough pureblood pups to keep the Alpha bloodline unchallenged. I took that for love.

It wasn’t.

He needed my body.

The moment I recovered from one birth, he was after the next. In seven years I gave him six heirs, and by then people had stopped praising my fertility and started envying my bond. They said no Alpha would keep returning to the same woman unless he was obsessed with her.

I believed them.

Then came the winter of my eighth year.

I nearly died giving birth to the seventh pup.

The healers were still trying to stop the bleeding when Rowan sent them all out. Before I could even ask why, he crossed the room, lifted a healer’s cup to my mouth, and forced down three swallows of wolfsbane tincture.

Only when I was dying did he tell me the truth.

If it were not for the fact that only a daughter of the Hart bloodline could bear pureblood Alpha heirs, he said, he never would have claimed me at all.

I had been useful for one thing only.

Heirs.

Now that he had enough, I had none.

I remember clawing at his sleeve and asking the only question left that mattered.

Then who did you want?

For the first time, Rowan hesitated.

Then he said, “Fine. I’ll tell you. The one I wanted was your—”

I died before he could finish.

That memory still lived in my bones. It made me cold, but it also left me sharper than I had ever been.

So I looked at my mother and said again, “I won’t bond with him.”

She stared at me in disbelief.

That was fair. She had watched me want Rowan for years. She knew I had waited for him near the northern patrol line, sat up through his injuries, and ignored every warning she ever gave me about pride and self-respect. As far as she knew, Rowan was the one male I had never been able to refuse.

“Clara,” she said carefully, “you used to swear you would never accept anyone else’s claim.”

“That was years ago,” I said. “I was young.”

Then, because I needed the refusal to sound final, I added, “Besides, someone else intends to claim me. He’ll be bringing his own bond papers soon.”

That startled her badly enough that she shot me a sharp look before turning back to Rowan with a strained smile.

“If Clara isn’t willing, there’s nothing I can do,” she said. Then her gaze shifted to my sister. “What about Ivy? She’s cared for you just as much.”

Ivy stiffened beside me.

Then she said, far too quickly, “Not me either.”

Our mother’s patience snapped. “What is wrong with both of you today?”

Ivy darted a glance at me, then lowered her eyes.

“I have someone too,” she said. “He’ll be making his claim soon.”

The Council moved quickly. With Blackthorne Pack, Recorder Hale, and Rowan’s own hidden papers all telling the same story, Rowan was stripped of his position and sent north under labor sentence for eight years. His parents received five years in detention for aiding coercion, unlawful confinement, and attempting to falsify the claim. The Alpha house was sealed, their holdings were seized, and Silver Ridge was placed under temporary Council oversight.By nightfall, everything Rowan had tried to protect was gone.On the day he was taken north, Ivy and I went to watch. He barely looked like himself. The arrogance was gone. So was the polish. When he passed us, he lifted his head and asked only one question.“Why?”Ivy turned away.I answered for both of us.“Because if we hadn’t stopped you, you would have destroyed us.”He looked as if he wanted to say more, but one of the guards shoved him forward and that was the end of it.As he disappeared down the road, Ivy touched my arm.I followe

In the end, Rowan and his father chose the worst possible path. When they returned, both looked relieved, or tried to.“We spoke to Alpha Blackthorne,” Rowan said. “He won’t interfere. Silver Ridge is to handle its own affairs.”I knew at once that something in that was false, but I said nothing. His mother finally relaxed.“Good. Then only Clara’s mother remains.” She turned to Rowan at once. “Tonight you finish what should have happened last night. Once the bond is real, the Harts will have no choice but to accept it.”For the first time that day, fear cut cleanly through me.I had expected threats. I had expected violence. I had not expected this.Rowan crossed the room and shoved me back onto the bed. The scent still clinging to it made my stomach turn. He pinned my wrists with one hand.“You did this to yourself,” he said. “If you had come to me yesterday, none of this would be happening.”Then the door flew open.“Let her go.”Ivy stood there with a sword in both hands. Her grip

Rowan went pale the moment his father opened the hidden papers.I was not surprised. The first time I went into his study to test him, I noticed the inner cabinet sat oddly against the wall. Afterward, I paid a servant to look inside. For a gold mark, he told me enough. So I already knew.Rowan had been planning this for a long time. The papers proved it. He meant to have Mara’s treaty status lifted, then bring her into the Alpha house under his private authority once he had publicly bonded a Hart daughter. His mother looked ready to collapse.“A treaty ward?” she whispered. “From Frost Hollow?”His father’s face was worse. He looked at Rowan as if he no longer recognized him.“You brought this female into your bed,” he said. “Then tried to put Clara in the Luna’s place as if that would cover it.”Rowan said nothing. His mother pressed both hands to her mouth. “If this gets out, the whole pack will know. Every rival pack will know.”Only then did Rowan move.He dropped to one knee befo

“Clara.”Rowan’s voice cut through the room.“Stop this. Don’t lie.”For a moment his parents only looked between us in confusion. Then his mother forced a smile.“So that’s all this is,” she said lightly. “An argument after the claiming night.” She reached for her mate’s arm. “We’ll leave you two to settle it.”I stopped her.“This isn’t an argument,” I said. “And I’m not lying.”All three of them turned back.“Last night, Alpha Blackthorne and his mate were at my house. I was with them the entire evening. If you don’t believe me, ask them.”That brought the room to a halt. His mother frowned. “That can’t be right. The servants said your chambers were occupied all night.” Her gaze flicked toward the bed behind Rowan. “If that wasn’t you, then who was it?”I looked at Rowan.“You should tell them now,” I said. “If I make Alpha Blackthorne repeat it here, this gets worse.”Rowan’s face darkened. For a long second he said nothing, as if sheer force of will might still hold the room toget

The next morning, Ivy and I left early. To anyone watching, we were simply headed to the market. In truth, we only needed to look normal.Halfway there, I told Ivy to go on without me and sat at a tea stall to rest. She had barely disappeared into the crowd when two males stepped out of the alley. One covered my mouth. The other dragged me back. I fought until one of them struck me hard enough to black out. When I woke, I was in Rowan’s chambers. He sat on the edge of the bed, rigid with anger. The room still smelled of burnt candles, healer’s oils, and the unmistakable aftermath of a claiming night. The sheets behind him were in ruins. His eyes locked on mine.“Explain.”I pushed myself up slowly. “Explain what?”He stood.“Last night was my claiming night,” he said. “The female in my bed was not you.”I glanced at the bed, then back at him.“You filed an unnamed claim,” I said. “You never named the female you wanted. Why does it matter which one crossed your threshold?”That brought

Ivy went still.“You’re not planning to hand me over, are you?” she asked. “We fight, yes, but I never tried to destroy you. If that’s what this is, I swear I’ll turn on you for real.”I rolled my eyes.“In my last life, I stepped aside because I thought Rowan wanted you,” I said. “Now I know what happened to you. Why would I send you back to him?”Some of the panic left her face.“Then what?” she asked. “If it’s not you and not me, who does he want?”I looked at my mother.“Not you,” I said quickly, when she took a step back. “I need your help.”That earned me a sharp look.“Good,” she said. “Because I was about to throw something at you.”Despite everything, I almost smiled. Then I told her what I had finally understood.Rowan had slipped twice. First with the herbs. Then with the honey rolls. I had never liked them. There was only one woman in our house who did. Only one whose cycle matched the calendar on his desk. Only one female he would prepare those blends for.By the time I fi
