Chapter 3

Autor: Lush Brooks
The next morning, Acara was waiting for me downstairs at my office.

The first thing she did when she saw me was to shove the box containing the ring into my hands.

“Are you done with your ploy?

“Even when your mother died, you weren’t making such a big deal out of it.”

I was dumbfounded. She should know my mother’s death was the deepest, rawest wound I had.

But here she was, hitting me where it hurt most just so she could force me to submit to her.

“Acara, I have sent you the papers to call off the engagement.”

She glanced at her phone, then deleted the document from her phone right in front of me.

“You think a useless piece of paper is enough to scare me?

“Zaire, you’re not a young man anymore.

“Imagine being a thirty-year-old man who was rejected by his fiancée and does not have any money or status! You’re going to be a laughingstock!

“I’m only marrying you because of the time we’ve spent together. It’s not like I can’t live without you.”

Nylah and Mia arrived shortly after that.

Nylah chucked a revised wedding itinerary into my hands.

“The wedding is happening in two days.

“You will apologize to Levi and promise not to cause us any more trouble on that day.”

Meanwhile, Mia leaned against the car and scrutinized me with a scornful look.

“You better know what’s good for you.

“If you lose Acara, you’re going to spend the rest of your life being a pathetic office worker.

“Then, you’re going to end up dying all alone in a rented apartment. Nobody is even going to know you’ve died until your body rots.”

I fixed a look at them, then burst out laughing.

“Why do you two care where I die?”

Nylah’s expression darkened in an instant.

“We’re your sisters!”

“Sisters?”

My laugh was cynical.

“That’s surprising. I thought you two were Levi’s nannies!”

As soon as I said so, Levi stepped out of the car.

He was clutching my necktie in his hand. I also noticed a piece of Band-Aid on the back of his hand where he had the IV drip needles inserted.

“Take it out on me if you want, but please don’t blame them.

“They’re only being cross with you because they care about me.

“You’ve had everything handed to you your whole life, but they are all I have.

“Are you going to take away what little affection they have for me?”

His legs then suddenly gave out from under him.

He slumped forward and would have collapsed on the floor if it weren’t for Acara holding him steady.

Nylah took his arm while Mia immediately inspected the needle mark on the back of his hand.

The three of them were attending to him as if it was something they had rehearsed countless times already.

Levi supported himself against Acara’s shoulder, then whimpered weakly.

“Maybe I should just not attend the wedding.

“I’m not going to be the best man, and I won’t stick around and be a nuisance in the family.

“I’m willing to move out if it’s what Zaire wants.”

Mia shot up abruptly.

“Zaire, are you happy now?

“What is it going to take to get you to stop? Do you want Levi to be homeless?”

Nylah was looking at me with utter disgust.

“If anything happens to Levi, I’ll make sure you no longer have the right to call yourself a Thornton.”

Acara, who was still holding onto Levi, shot me a look.

“The wedding will be held in two days at ten in the morning.

“If you publicly apologize to Levi, I might consider marrying you after all.

“Otherwise, don’t you even dream of being involved with the Greys ever again.”

I bent over to grab the tie that had dropped to the floor, then tossed it into the trash can.

“Fine, I won’t get involved with the Greys.”

Acara let out a derisive laugh.

“Quit posturing already!

“You wouldn’t even last a month without my family and me!

“You better hope you don’t end up pleading outside my house and embarrassing yourself.”

I didn’t spare her another glance before leaving.

That same afternoon, I wrapped up the handover at work.

During the evening, Acara’s assistant came to deliver a document detailing the new wedding itinerary to me.

It was a three-page note, all of which related to Levi.

Since Levi could not handle bright lights, the lighting onstage had to be dimmed.

He was also allergic to pollen, which meant fresh flowers had to be replaced with artificial ones.

Levi would be stressed out standing next to me, so I had to limit my speech to three minutes.

At the bottom of the document were more handwritten notes from Acara.

[Quit your antics.

[Bring your breakfast tomorrow for the rehearsal.

[Levi wants the sandwiches you make.]

I tossed the schedule into the paper shredder without thinking twice.

That night, Acara sent a text in the group chat directed at my sisters.

[He will come tomorrow at ten o’clock.]

Nylah replied, [Don’t give him any chance to squirm away. He’ll fall in line.]

Mia chimed in, [He’s spineless. The only way to teach him a lesson is to use force.]

Six months later, I was standing backstage at a product launch for a new project. While my assistant was fixing my cuffs, she noticed the mechanical watch I was wearing. The dial had been repaired. The cracks were still there and noticeable, even though they had been filled with a gold-colored material.Despite that, I felt the golden touch made it even more personal.“Mr. Thornton, it’s time for you to go onstage.”I nodded. The stage lights were turned on.This time, nobody was late. The lights did not have to be dimmed several shades for Levi’s sake.My name was cast on the giant display.[Zaire Thornton, Head of Research and Development.]The audience applauded.I stepped onto the stage for a product demonstration. The livestream camera swept across the crowd.Acara was seated in the very last row, with my sisters next to her. They did not try to contact me, nor did they try to force their way backstage. After the event, a reporter came to me.“Dr. Zaire, what ins

Before returning home, I had my lawyer file a lawsuit against Levi. The mechanical watch Mom had left for me was professionally restored. He had to bear the full cost of the restoration along with the original price of the watch.Furthermore, every cent of the company funds for research and development, which he had misappropriated, must be returned. All of the assets the Thorntons had given him, including the sports car from Acara, had been reclaimed.Despite all that, they did not banish him to the streets.Nylah found him a modest place to live in while providing him a monthly allowance enough for the essentials.“He must be held accountable for what he’s done.“However, given that we have taken him into our family, we cannot leave him out for dead.”That was her final decision.I did not offer any input. At last, she had a sense of judgment. However, it was a little too late.On the day I returned to the country, Acara waited for me at the airport. She did not bring

Levi pursued me all the way overseas. He stopped me at the hotel lobby. The moment he saw me, he approached me pleadingly.Drawn by the commotion, a crowd soon formed around us.“Zaire, I was wrong.“Please don’t abandon Nylah and Mia.“Both of them haven’t been able to eat or sleep the last few days.“If you would just come back, I promise I’ll leave for good.”Then, Acara and my sisters showed up out of nowhere.Levi lowered his voice so only I could hear him.“It’s all because I’ve stolen your place, isn’t it?“I swear I will give you anything you want as long as you forgive them.”Then, he suddenly slammed himself into the corner of a nearby table.Mia instinctively reached out to steady him.In one smooth gesture, Levi braced himself against her shoulders. It was a practiced gesture, like a replay of past instances. However, something changed this time. After Mia steadied him, she immediately pulled away.“Alright, stand up straight.”Levi froze.Meanwhile, I s

The next day, my sisters asked to meet with me again at a restaurant my late mother loved.By the time I arrived, they had been waiting for me for two hours.Nylah slid a parcel to me when I sat down.“These are the letters Mom left behind.“They have been kept in a safe all this time.”I didn’t take them. I gave them a pointed look.“Don’t beat around the bush.”Her voice was dry and cracked as she said, “We know we were in the wrong.“Mom asked us to look after you before she passed, but we failed her.”Nylah took over.“But even after all that’s happened, we’re still family.“Come home and be with us.“There will always be a special place for you among the Thorntons.”I shot them a look.“A place for me?“Are you referring to the other half of Levi’s gaming room?”Nylah’s face turned pale, then she tried to explain.“We have restored the room to its previous state.“We put all your trophies and pictures back where they belonged.”I asked sharply, “What about the s

That night, as soon as I stepped out of the elevator, I ran into Acara, who had been waiting for me in the hotel lobby.“Zaire, I want to talk. Just give me ten minutes.”I looked at the time.“Fine.”She let out a sigh of relief. With that, we went to a discreet corner in the cafe. She set her wedding ring on the table, then began.“Let’s try again with the wedding.“We’ll plan it exactly how you want it this time.“I promise Levi won’t be present this time.”I stared at the ring.“Is that all?”She gulped, then continued, “I will buy the house that you ended up selling so you can live there again.“You can decide the wedding venue.“Is this still not enough for you? Haven’t I done enough?”I could not hold back from laughing.“Did you think the reason I left was that the wedding didn’t go the way I wanted it to?”“Wasn’t that the reason?”I slid the ring back to her, then started to explain.“Alright, listen up.“On the anniversary of my mother’s death, you promis

Some time later, I attended an industry summit as the keynote speaker.A throng of journalists surrounded the venue entrance.Acara and my sisters had taken a red-eye flight to be here, only to be stopped by the security at the entrance.“I’m sorry, but it doesn’t seem like any of you are on the guest list.”Acara produced her business card.“I am the CEO of Grey Corporation.”The security guard took one look, then refused entry again.“Industry visitors are required to register.”Nylah then prompted in a firm voice, “We are the family members of Zaire Thornton.”A nearby staff member went through the system.“It says here that Mr. Thornton has not made any registration for any family members.”The trio was dumbfounded upon hearing this. With that, they had no choice but to stand outside and peek through the glass wall.Meanwhile, I stepped onto the stage.I was wearing a professionally tailored suit. The large screen behind me displayed the data visualisation of my late
