Chapter 1

Author: Washing Wheat
The agony of having my flesh torn apart and devoured by fish had finally ended. Yet instead of disappearing, I found myself trapped at the side of the one who had set everything in motion: Lucian Crowe.

The heater filled the room with a gentle warmth, so comfortable it almost made the bone-deep cold I had endured before death feel like nothing more than a distant dream.

A call came in from Damon Cross, the bodyguard assigned to watch over me.

Lucian spoke first.

"Has Iris Malone finally admitted her fault?" His voice was cold, laced with contempt. "If she had behaved this obediently from the start, she wouldn’t have suffered so much. Bring her up. Make her kneel properly in front of Selena’s grave and repent. Otherwise, she shouldn’t even think about returning to the Crowe family."

Every word dripped with scorn. In his mind, I was already the culprit who had killed Selena. If I refused to confess, then I was unforgivable, beyond redemption.

There was a pause on the other end of the line.

"Sir… that’s not it," Damon said hesitantly. "Madam has been tied up for a whole night. The oxygen tank has already run out. I’m calling to ask if we should proceed with a rescue."

Silence fell over the room for a brief second.

Lucian, who was always so composed, suddenly grabbed the wine bottle in front of him and smashed it against the floor. The sharp crack echoed through the room, yet it still wasn’t enough to contain his fury.

"Rescue? What rescue! What is there to pity about a murderer like her? At this time of year, even if the tide comes in, that area won’t be submerged. At most, she’s just getting splashed by seawater. What danger could there possibly be?

"And where did that oxygen tank even come from? She killed Selena. How does she still have the nerve to enjoy something like that? Take it away!

"No one is allowed to save her! Isn’t she refusing to admit her mistake? Then let her experience what it felt like for Selena—helpless, suffocating, and waiting to die!"

Each icy word struck my heart like a hammer.

Enjoy?

Was he talking about being submerged in the freezing February waters for an entire day and night, right after a forced abortion?

Or enduring the tearing pain in my abdomen, watching blood flow endlessly beneath me as fish gnawed and ripped at my flesh, while I had no way to call for help?

Besides, even that so-called "enjoyment" wasn’t something he had ever allowed me.

In the end, what I thought was the last trace of affection he still held for me was nothing more than a kindness from someone else, given without his knowledge.

Grief and bitterness wrapped around me, blurring my vision.

On the other end, Damon spoke again, his voice filled with unease, "But, sir, it’s February. The seawater is freezing. Madam just underwent an abortion. Her body might not be able to handle it."

Lucian’s brows furrowed slightly.

For a fleeting moment, I thought he would finally show me a shred of mercy.

A cold laugh shattered that illusion.

"If something happens to her, she deserves it. For the sake of that useless lump of flesh, she stood by and let Selena die. The sea swallowed Selena, and we never recovered her body. She feels pain? And Selena didn’t?"

The rest of his words faded into a dull roar.

The phrase "lump of flesh" echoed over and over in my mind like a curse, eating away at my heart.

He said it was just a lump of flesh.

It wasn’t.

It wasn’t a lump of flesh.

That was my child—the child I had begged and prayed for, the child who had been with me for three months, who hadn’t even had the chance to step into this world.

Tears spilled uncontrollably from my eyes.

I still remembered kneeling outside the operating theatre, begging Lucian over and over again to let me keep the baby.

My child had curled up inside me, tiny hands and feet just beginning to take shape. In another month, it would have stretched and moved inside my womb, greeting me, telling me that I had been chosen—firmly, surely—by my baby to be its mother.

And yet, my own husband had destroyed all of it.

I couldn’t understand it.

That was his child, too.

How could he be so cruel?

Very soon, I understood.

After hanging up the phone, he seemed like a puppet with its strings cut, collapsing onto the sofa.

All his rage vanished.

With a tenderness I had never received, he reached out and gently caressed the face in Selena’s memorial photograph. His eyes were bloodshot.

"Selena, if I had forced her to abort the child to save you back then, would you still have died? Why… why wasn’t it you who met me first?"

That wasn’t all.Carson also placed evidence in front of my parents—proof of the years of bullying and abuse Selena had orchestrated against me.Faced with their questioning, Selena remained unapologetic. She was convinced they would take her side, just like always."Iris was just a burden you dumped in the countryside for that old woman to raise. I’m your real daughter, your princess."If she had stayed there forever, I wouldn’t have bothered with her. But she just had to come back. Grandma even made you send her to a good school. Have you seen how rustic she looks? And she dares to call herself my sister? It’s embarrassing!"So what if I excluded her? Didn’t you think she was unnecessary, too?"As for Lucian, what gives her the right to have someone so devoted to her? I just couldn’t stand it. I wanted her to be miserable!"You think Lucian is anything special? He’s only valuable because she likes him. I just didn’t want her to get what she wanted."Dad was furious. He slappe

He tore off his coat, about to drape it over me, but the police immediately forced him down."We have reason to suspect you of involvement in the victim’s death. You’ll need to come with us."Lucian’s face was pressed into the sand. When he saw my body being zipped into a body bag and carried toward the vehicle, he struggled violently, roaring for them to put me down.Half of his handsome face was scraped raw by the sand, the flesh torn open, but he seemed unable to feel the pain. He shouted the entire way.Even during interrogation, he kept demanding my body from the officers. That was, until the evidence was laid out in front of him."Stop with the self-righteous act," Officer Declan Shaw said coldly, placing photos on the table one by one. "Based on our investigation, Selena Malone was the one you loved. During your three-year marriage, you neglected the victim and maintained an inappropriate relationship with Selena. Today was even your wedding day with her, wasn’t it?""No!

Lucian grabbed Nolan by the collar. "Who did he say is dead? Not Iris. It’s not Iris, right?!""My Iris!" A cry of anguish rang out. Grandma collapsed.Chaos erupted near the stage.I wanted to go to her, my eyes burning with urgency, but I was trapped at Lucian’s side, forced to watch him lose his mind.Nolan repeated shakily, "Sir… Madam is dead.""That’s nonsense!" Lucian’s grip tightened, his voice unhinged. "Take me to her! Take me to her!"The car sped all the way to the shore. On the beach, a human-shaped figure lay beneath a white sheet.Supported by his assistant, Lucian stumbled out of the car. He took a few steps forward, staring at the sheet, and could go no further. He turned to Damon. "That’s not Iris, right? She’s just angry at me and had someone lie there to trick me, right?"Damon said nothing. He lifted the sheet, revealing my face.Perhaps because the seawater had been so cold, even after soaking for so long, my face hadn’t swollen and only turned an unnat

The next second, Grandma slapped him again."That’s your sister’s son! Iris’s cousin, Carson Allen! You cut ties with your own sister and can’t even recognize your own nephew, yet you put such a filthy label on her? Where is Iris?!"Silence fell over the entire hall."How… how could it be Carson?" Dad stared at the photo, his mind blank, then turned to Selena. "Selena, didn’t you say this guy was a delinquent?"Even if he had cut ties with his sister, Vivian Allen, he had still heard from others that Carson was the youngest chief physician and professor at the provincial hospital, nothing like a delinquent. All eyes turned to Selena.Dad’s words confirmed the man’s identity."So… the child isn’t illegitimate? It’s really Lucian’s?" someone murmured.A loud crash echoed. Lucian had knocked over the microphone stand. The screech of feedback filled the hall.Without hesitation, he jumped off the stage and rushed toward the exit.Selena grabbed him, crying pitifully. Grandma Harriet Malone yanked the cane back, her eyes blazing."When I entrusted my little Iris to you, what did you promise? You said you’d treat her well for the rest of your life! Is this what you call treating her well—marrying her own sister while she’s pregnant?!"As murmurs spread through the crowd, my parents rushed onto the stage, trying to pull Grandma away."Mom, how can you say that? How is Selena supposed to face people in the future?"Grandma slapped Dad across the face. "If you’re afraid of gossip, then don’t do such disgusting things!""You two are so biased it’s sickening! My precious little Iris ended up in your hands, and this is how you treat her? No wonder I couldn’t reach her these past few days. You heartless people have been bullying her together!"I may be old, but I’m not dead! If you don’t want her, I do! If you don’t love her, I will!""Where is Iris? I’m taking her away. I may not have much, but I can still raise her and my great-grandchild!"'Grand

With tears streaming down her face, Mom looked at Selena. "My poor Selena, even now, you’re still thinking about that heartless Iris. Lucian, this is her only wish. Can you grant it?"Dad added, "Lucian, she doesn’t have much time left. This is her only wish. Consider it a favor to me."At that moment, they had completely forgotten all sense of decency. They had forgotten that Lucian was their other daughter’s husband and Selena’s brother-in-law.Absurd.Utterly absurd.I looked at Lucian, wanting to know his answer, but I already knew. He had abandoned our child and me for Selena. What was this, compared to that? After a brief hesitation, Lucian nodded.Even though I had expected it, it still felt laughable that thirteen years of love had come to this.He moved quickly. He had a lawyer draft the divorce agreement and began preparing for his wedding with Selena. On the day of the wedding, he even called Damon, who was watching over me."I’ll have someone deliver the divorce
