Lake Como looked almost unreal from the back seat of the car. The road curved along the water, revealing flashes of blue between stone walls, cypress trees and villas climbing the green hillsides. Serena lowered her sunglasses slightly as another stretch of lake appeared, sunlight scattering across its surface.

Beside her, Elena closed her laptop. “Enjoy the view while you can. Daniel has you in a technical briefing at eight tomorrow morning.”

Serena turned. “Eight? You’re the one who told me I

At precisely seven-thirty on Friday evening, Serena’s doorbell rang. She glanced at the clock and smiled.“Show-off.”She gave herself one last inspection in the hallway mirror before opening the door. She’d chosen a midnight-blue dress that hugged her curves, with a neckline just daring enough to make a respectable man reconsider his manners. Her curls fell loosely over her shoulders, and she’d paired the dress with comfortable heels, having decided that recovering from three broken ribs was quite enough suffering for one woman.Damian stood outside in a charcoal suit, holding an arrangement of pink roses and white flowers. His gaze moved over her.Slowly.Serena leaned against the doorframe.“Well?”“You look beautiful.”“That’s all?”“I could be more specific, but we’d miss our reservation.”She laughed and accepted the flowers.“How disappointing. I was hoping for a speech.”“You’ve never been patient enough to listen to one.”“True.”Damian stepped inside while she found a vase.

Serena was curled up on her sofa reviewing notes from her latest track session when Damian arrived with dinner.“You’re late,” she announced as he entered.“By seven minutes.”“Eight, actually. I was beginning to think you’d abandoned me.”Damian set the food on the coffee table. “You would have called.”“That’s rather presumptuous.”“You’ve called me twice today.”“Both times were for perfectly legitimate reasons.”“One was to tell me Theo had accused you of being impatient.”“He was being unreasonable.”“And the other?”Serena considered him. “I don’t recall.”“Convenient.”She laughed as Damian removed his jacket and settled beside her.Over the past several weeks, he’d become a familiar presence in her home. Sometimes he brought dinner. Other evenings, they watched television or talked until Serena realized how late it had become. It was strange how easily they’d slipped into spending time together again, particularly when so much remained unsettled between them.“How was training

By her second lap, Serena was beginning to remember why she loved driving. The steering responded smoothly beneath her hands, and the engine’s familiar vibration no longer made her tense at every turn. She wasn’t moving fast, but after weeks of rehabilitation, being on the circuit again felt wonderful.“How’s the shoulder?” Theo asked over the radio.“Fine. The rest of me is getting impatient.”“One more lap at this pace, then we’ll review.”“Understood.”She accelerated along the straight, smiling inside her helmet. Then she saw the next corner. It wasn’t the same circuit, but the resemblance was unsettling. A long straight ended in a demanding right-hand corner, much like the one she’d been approaching when her car lost control. Her hands tightened before she could stop them. She remembered the rear of the car suddenly swinging left, her desperate attempt to correct it, and the terrifying moment it snapped in the opposite direction. Then came the helpless spin across the track and t

Serena had discovered that recovering from an accident required a great deal more patience than she possessed. In the days following Julian’s arrest, her rehabilitation continued at a frustratingly slow pace. There were mornings when lifting her arm seemed like an achievement worth celebrating and afternoons when the simplest exercises left her exhausted. But gradually, things began to improve. The pain in her ribs became less persistent, her shoulder regained some mobility, and the dizziness that had troubled her earlier in her recovery had subsided. Her doctors were discussing her discharge, although she would still need outpatient physiotherapy and regular assessments. For now, her therapist had begun introducing more demanding exercises, something Serena had initially welcomed before discovering just how demanding they could be.“Again,” her physiotherapist instructed.Serena raised her arm, holding the position until the muscles around her injured shoulder began to protest.“Five

The morning Julian Taylor was arrested, he was preparing to attend a meeting at Aella Group. He had just stepped out of his car when two officers approached him outside the building.“Julian Taylor?”Julian glanced at their identification. “What is this about?”“Detective Fraser. We have a warrant for your arrest in connection with the deliberate interference with vehicles used by Street Nation and Laurent Motorsport, and related offences.”For a moment, Julian simply stared at him. Then his expression hardened.“You cannot be serious.”Fraser informed him of his rights. Julian looked toward the building entrance, where employees had begun slowing to watch.“I want my lawyer,” he said.“You’ll have the opportunity to contact one.”Julian took a step back. “Do you have any idea who you’re dealing with?”“Yes,” Fraser replied. “That’s why we’re here.”Julian was escorted to the waiting vehicle. By the time its door closed, several people had their phones out.. . .Malcolm delivered the

Mara had never imagined she would find herself sitting in a police interview room with a lawyer beside her.Yet there she was, staring at the folder Detective Fraser had placed on the table, wondering whether cooperating with the investigation would be enough to keep her out of prison.“Before we begin,” Fraser said, “I want to make something clear. Your willingness to cooperate will be documented, but it does not guarantee immunity from prosecution.”Mara glanced at her lawyer, who gave her a reassuring nod.“I understand.”“Then let’s start with Edmund Voss. How did you meet him?”“He contacted me through a business acquaintance. This was shortly after Serena and I had our falling-out.”“And what did he want?”“Information about Serena. At first, he asked about her professional commitments, the events she was attending, and whether she was still involved with Damian Taylor.”“Did he explain why?”“He said he represented a private consulting company gathering information for a client
