No reply.

But I knew she saw it.

My mom called. The engagement got pushed—to my birthday.

I hung up. The plane took off.

The city shrank below me, smaller and smaller, until my head finally cleared.

I woke from a nap. We'd already landed.

The second I stepped out, warm air hit me. The driver grabbed my luggage.

On the way, he ran through my schedule. Clean. Simple. I liked it.

"Ms. Ellsworth set it up. Said you don't like a packed schedule. She'll be waiting at the hotel entrance."

  • Too Bad I Was Him   Chapter 10

A week later, I pulled the plug on Mercer Group.Chloe showed up at my office. Her eyes were bloodshot. Hair a mess. Clothes wrinkled like she'd been sleeping in them.Rough."Kyle—no, Ray—why did you lie to me? Was it fun? You knew who I was the whole time, didn't you?"I leaned back, relaxed. "My name is Ray Remington. And you were playing me too, remember? We both lied. Difference is, I actually had the status." A beat. "Oh—and your gifts? I had them sent back."I checked my watch. "Should be getting there right about now."Her face twisted. She dropped onto the couch, head down, mumbling."If I hadn't lied... would you have kept pretending? I didn't have a choice. It was for Mercer Group. For my family." Her voice cracked. "Did you ever actually love me?"A tear hit the carpet.I felt nothing. No what-ifs. It already happened. And I gave her a chance. The second I asked what she'd do if I were her Remington contact, her face said it all.We were never happening."Chl

"You'd better not start anything." Chloe tossed that over her shoulder and walked off.I shook my head, smiling—then someone hooked my arm.I glanced down. Evelyn.Concern written all over her face."I'm fine."She nodded.A staffer came up, said most guests were here and my mom was ready to speak.Evelyn and I moved to the side of the stage. Across the room, Chloe looked way too pleased with herself.Applause thundered through the hall, then faded. My mom stepped up to the mic."Thank you all for coming to my son's birthday banquet. Tonight, we have two announcements."The second she said that, every head turned to Chloe. Our engagement had been all over the business circle."These will be announced by my son, Ray."My mom stepped aside. All eyes—especially Chloe's—locked on the stage.I walked up, slow, steady, and stopped beside Mom.I swept the room, then landed on Chloe. The smile on her face? Gone. Just pale, like someone hit delete.I took the mic. My mom gave

A black Maybach rolled into view—Chloe's car.I'd only been in it once. She'd claimed it was a client's. Made me clean my shoes, change clothes, then let me in like I barely qualified.Yeah... looking back, I had to laugh. I was such an idiot.Evelyn sent a bunch of photos and two videos—full layout of my birthday setup.Champagne tones. Clean, elegant. Exactly my style. Her voice message came through, a little teasing, like she was fishing for praise."So... what's my reward?"I smiled, sent one back."Dinner tonight. At my home."Soon, she replied, "It would be my great honor."At dinner, my parents kept praising Evelyn—thoughtful, capable, all that.I said nothing. Just ate.She tried to hold back her smile, but yeah... no chance. By the end, she looked quietly thrilled.I walked her out to her car.She slipped closer and held onto my arm. A faint hint of alcohol on her breath."Ray, thank goodness you're still mine." She kissed my cheek. She said thank goodness...

Back in my room, I showered. Then a message from Evelyn popped up.[Ray, free for dinner tonight?]I smiled.[My pleasure.]Didn't expect her back this early—she was supposed to return on my birthday.Dinner was great. Before we split, she kissed my cheek. We moved a step closer. The next morning, I went straight to the company. In front of all the shareholders, my mom announced I'd be the next chairman. No one argued. After graduation, I'd started at the bottom at Remington Group. After the handover, I saw Chloe. She sat in the reception room at Remington Tower, asking to see "Ray Remington."Instead, she got me.Our eyes locked. Panic flashed across her face. She shot up to leave.I stepped in front of the only exit. Finally, she spoke."Kyle, I won't lie. I'm the Mercer family's only daughter—the one behind Mercer Group. We were never possible. You work here, and I'm the heiress. We're not even close."I watched her, expression flat. The arrogance was loud."So wh

Haven't seen her since.Didn't think we'd meet again like this—for marriage. The car stopped at the hotel."Long time no see." Her voice was soft.I looked up. She was beautiful.I nodded and got out."You've heard what's been going on in Arlencia. I don't get why you picked me again."She didn't answer right away. She handed me a h

Gideon didn't play along with our parents' whole "marry for business" plan. He bailed and built his own custom formalwear brand. He studied fashion, had insane taste, and the rich basically lined up for his work.Chloe included."You here for the suit?" Gideon grinned and dragged me inside.Once I started dating Chloe, my family knew. They just let me run the show."That girl still has no clue she's supposed to marry you?"He handed me a cup of hot tea. I took a sip, eyes drifting over the custom pieces filling the place."She doesn't even know who you are. How would she know mine?" I said.Gideon laughed and shoved the suit Chloe had ordered at me.The measurements were off—bad. She'd asked for a standard size, said she'd fix it later.A weird bitterness hit. She paid this much attention... just not to me."Alright, I'll take it."I grabbed the packaged suit, said bye to Gideon, and drove to the hospital. At the ward door, Chloe looked from me to the box in my hands.
