“Do not look at it again,” Kade said, taking the phone gently out of my hand and turning it face down on his desk.

“Someone stood outside that pharmacy, Kade, someone watched me buy those tests and I never saw them,” I said, and I could hear my voice trembling.

“Sit, please, before you fall down,” he said, steering me to the leather couch by the window.

“I am not going to fall down,” I said, and then my knees folded, and I sat so hard the cushions sighed.

“You are shaking,” Kade said.

“I am cold, it is the air conditioning,” I said.

“Mina,” he said, and he knelt on the carpet in front of me, in his thousand dollar suit, and looked up at my face. “Nobody here is going to laugh at you for being scared.”

“I am not scared, I am furious, and a little scared,” I said, and my eyes filled before I could stop them.

“That is allowed,” Kade said.

“I spent two years with someone who laughed at me behind a door, and now someone is taking pictures of me in the street, and I cannot tell which one hurts worse,” I said, and the tears finally fell.

“Neither one gets to hurt you again, I mean that,” Kade said, and he pulled the tissue box across the table with a hand that was not quite steady.

“You do not even know me,” I said, laughing through the tears.

“I know you stood in my boardroom with a baby in your stomach and a man blackmailing you, and you still showed me page four of an invoice, I know that much,” he said.

I laughed again, and it turned into a hiccup, and he handed me a tissue and then another, and he never said one word about the black mascara running down my cheeks.

The door opened without a knock, and a broad man with a gray beard walked in.

“Brandt, finally,” Kade said, standing.

“Sir, I ran the number, it is a prepaid phone, bought with cash at a gas station on Fifth, switched on two hours ago and switched off again,” Brandt said.

“Camera footage?” Kade asked.

“The gas station camera is broken, sir, the shop owner says a man in a cap paid, and that is all he remembers,” Brandt said.

“A man in a cap,” Kade said, in a voice so soft it frightened me more than shouting. “Where was Dean this afternoon?”

“He came back from lunch at one, sir, but he has been out of sight for two hours,” Brandt said.

“Find him, do not touch him, I want to know who he talks to,” Kade said.

“And the other matter?” Brandt asked, glancing at me.

“Twenty four hour guard on Miss Hale starting now, one man at the door, one in the car, nobody gets within ten feet of her without my name,” Kade said.

“Kade, that is too much,” I said.

“It is not nearly enough, go,” Kade said, and Brandt left.

“I cannot live with bodyguards, I cannot even eat a sandwich with a man watching,” I said.

“Then you will live with me, my building has its own security and nobody gets past the lobby, east wing, balcony, rule one,” Kade said.

“Tonight?” I asked.

“Tonight, I am not asking, Red, I am telling you as the man who will have to explain this to a child someday,” Kade said, and he sat beside me, close enough that his arm touched mine.

“A child,” I said, and my hand found my stomach again, and this time he looked at it.

“May I?” he asked, so quietly I almost missed it.

I nodded, and he laid his palm over mine, careful, as if I were made of glass, and the whole room went still.

“I cannot feel anything,” Kade whispered.

“It is too early, it is the size of a grape, Zola read it on her phone,” I said.

“A grape,” Kade said, and his voice broke on the word. “I have three companies, and I am scared of a grape.”

I started to laugh and cry at the same time, and he laughed too, and for a moment we sat there like two people who were not under contract.

“Rule three,” I said softly, though neither of us moved.

“I know,” Kade said, and he did not take his hand away.

“Miss Hale, thank goodness, you have a package,” Gus said, standing up the moment I walked into the lobby with a tall guard behind me.

“A package?” I asked.

“A man delivered it this afternoon, he said you had to sign for it in person, I did not like his face,” Gus said, handing me a thick white envelope.

“Thank you, Gus,” I said, and my stomach turned over, because the corner of the envelope carried a law firm’s name in silver letters.

Upstairs, Zola was waiting inside my apartment with three suitcases and a glass of orange juice, and she handed me the juice without a word.

“I packed everything, the gray sweaters too, I know they are your emotional support clothing,” Zola said.

“You are the best friend in the world,” I said.

“I know, now what is that in your hand?” Zola asked.

I sat on the arm of the sofa and tore open the envelope, and a stack of pages slid into my lap, and the first page was stamped with a court seal.

“Petition for Determination of Paternity,” I read out loud, and my voice went very thin. “Plaintiff, Dean Cross, requests a court order declaring that the child carried by the defendant, Mina Hale, is his.”

“What?” Zola said. “It is not his, you have not touched him in two months!”

“I know, Zola, I know, but he is going to say it is, he is going to drag me through a court and demand a test and tell the whole world,” I said, and the pages shook so hard in my hands that they rattled.

“Wait, how does he even know you are pregnant, you told nobody except me, and Kade,” Zola said slowly.

I looked at her, and she looked at me, and the same cold thought crossed both our faces.

“Somebody told him,” I whispered.

My phone buzzed on the cushion, and I knew before I turned it over that it was the unknown number again.

Now do you want to pay me, Mina, or do you want everyone to know whose baby it really is?

"Nobody move, nobody wave, nobody look at the glass," Brandt said, in a voice so calm that it made me shiver."Why would we not look?" Zola whispered."Because whoever took that photo wants a reaction, and a reaction is a gift," Brandt said, stepping in front of the doors and speaking into a small radio on his collar. "Team two, the street, two o'clock, gray van, check it now."Kade pulled me away from the window and walked me to the elevator with his hand flat against my back."Upstairs, all of us, now," Kade said.In the penthouse, Kade pulled the curtains shut one by one, as if he were putting a house to bed."I am wearing a wedding dress in a hallway, and I have never felt less like a bride," I said."Take off the coat," Kade said."Why?" I asked."Because I have not seen it, I have been standing here trying not to ask, and I cannot do it anymore," Kade said.I unbuttoned the gray coat and let it slide off my shoulders, and the cream fabric fell around me, soft and heavy, over the

“Fifteen years,” Kade said, staring at the cracked screen. “He taught me to ride a bicycle in the driveway when my father stopped coming home.”“Maybe he was only told to do it, maybe he did not know what it was for,” I said.“Teddy does not scratch his nose without permission, if he was in that alley, somebody sent him,” Kade said.“He sat with me in the hospital when Nana Rose had her surgery, he brought me chocolate milk, he knows how I take my coffee,” he added, and his voice caught.“Your mother,” Zola said quietly.“Do not say it yet,” Kade said, and he pressed the heel of his hand against his eyes.“Sir, I can bring him in, I know where he parks the car on weekends,” Brandt said.“Not yet, if he disappears, we learn nothing, I want to hear her say it first,” Kade said, and he pulled out his phone.“You are calling her now?” I asked.“I have waited twenty years to ask my mother one honest question, I am not going to wait another hour,” Kade said, and he put the phone on speaker.

“Brandt, I am in the middle of a fitting,” I said, holding the front of the dress with both hands.“I know, Miss Hale, and I am sorry, but I need you to change and come out the back door in two minutes,” Brandt said, and for the first time since I had met him, his deep voice sounded rushed.“Why the back door?” Zola asked, stepping in front of me like a small, furious wall.“Because a man in a gray cap has been standing across the street since you walked in, he has not bought a coffee, he has not looked at a phone, he has only watched this window,” Brandt said.My stomach dropped. “Kade just texted me, he said he told one person about the Harbor Hotel, and the photographers are there now, and that person was you.”“Yes, ma’am, he told me, and I did not tell a soul, I have not spoken to anyone since this morning except you and Miss Zola,” Brandt said.“That is exactly what a person who told somebody would say,” Zola said.“Zola is right, I have to ask, and I need you not to be offended

“Mina is tired, the baby has been sitting on her bladder since breakfast,” Kade said brightly, putting down his glass and sliding his arm around my waist. “We will see you all Saturday.”“Poor child, take her home and feed her something with iron in it, red meat, spinach, Nana’s soup,” Nana Rose called after us.“I am the best man, I should come, I have opinions about flowers,” Bash said, grinning.“Saturday, Bash, you can have all the opinions you want, save some for the day,” Kade said, and his smile did not move an inch until the door shut behind us.In the elevator, Kade leaned against the mirror and closed his eyes, and the smile dropped off his face like a mask.“Whoever sent that was in the room, or watching the room, or knew exactly when everyone would be holding a phone,” I said.“Or it was a very well timed guess, which is what I would do if I wanted you to suspect everyone you love,” Kade said, without opening his eyes.“That is what I said earlier,” I said.“I know, I am s

“You turned your phone over,” Kade said, lifting his head from my sweater.“What?” I asked.“When it buzzed, you looked at it, and you turned it face down against my shoulder, I felt you do it,” Kade said.“It is nothing, it is just Zola,” I said, and then I heard myself, and I closed my eyes.“Mina,” Kade said gently.“I promised myself I would not do this again, I promised it in the kitchen last night, and I did it again in under a day,” I said.“Do what?” Kade asked.“Hide something, I got scared, you were sitting there with your face in your hands, and I thought, he cannot take one more thing today,” I said.“That is not your decision to make, Red, I am not made of glass, give it to me,” Kade said, holding out his hand.I took out my phone and unlocked it, and my fingers did not want to let go.He read the message twice, and I watched his thumb tighten on the edge of the screen.“Do you want to know who else in his house is lying to you,” Kade read out loud, very softly.“It is th

“Tamsin,” Zola whispered, picking her croissant up off the floor. “The woman with the cheekbones, from the office?”“She said my sweater made a strong statement,” I said, and my hands went cold.“Brandt, hold her at the building, do not let her leave, and do not say a word,” Kade said into the phone.“Yes, sir,” Brandt said, and the line went dead.Kade picked up his keys, and his hand was not steady.“I am coming with you,” I said.“No, you are not, it is going to be ugly,” Kade said.“She sold my face to a newspaper, Kade, I have a right to be in the room,” I said.He looked at me for a long moment, and then he held out his hand. “Stay behind me, and if you want to leave, squeeze my fingers, and I will end it.”“I am coming too,” Zola said, grabbing her bag.“Absolutely not, you will set something on fire,” Kade said.“That is a very reasonable concern, I will wait with the guards and a croissant,” Zola said, and she hugged me and whispered, “Be loud.”In the car Kade stared out the
