LYDIA POV

The shadow-blade cut through the fog with a sickening, high-pitched hum.

It was aimed directly at my throat, dripping with the black, bubbling venom of the Shadowclaw coalition. I couldn't move. My legs were anchored to the stone floor by pure physical exhaustion, my chest heaving, my White Light drained down to a flicker.

"Lydia!"

Two voices shouted my name at the exact same second.

A dark shadow blurred across my vision. Adrian reached me first, his long broadsword whipping upward in a sharp, arc of silver steel. The heavy metal blade collided with the assassin's projectile, shattering the shadow-blade into a hundred glittering, poisonous fragments.

Before the assassin could reset his stance, Patrick roared—a primal, sound of pure Alpha fury—and launched himself over the spears. His claws snapped out, tearing through the assassin’s throat before the shadowy figure could even draw a second weapon. Black, corrupted blood sprayed across the cobblestones.

"Shadowclaw stealth strike!" Commander Vance barked, drawing his twin hand-axes despite the weakness lingering in his limbs. "Form a defensive circle around the Head Healer! Protect the White Light!"

In an instant, the courtyard exploded into absolute chaos.

The dark fog rolling over the walls wasn't natural weather; it was a woven blanket of dark sorcery. Dozens of shadowy, masked figures dropped from the upper battlements like spiders, their blades coated in the same black-vein toxin that had crippled my patients. Behind them, terrifyingly, were mind-controlled omega wolves from the border villages—their eyes milky white, black veins bulging violently across their skin, moving like living weapons programmed to destroy everything in their path.

"They're using our infected people as meat shields!" an elder Stormfang warrior shouted, his sword wavering. "We can't cut them down! They're innocent!"

"Don't kill them!" I screamed, my voice cracking as I forced myself to stand upright, pushing away from the support of the stone wall. "If you cut them, the poison in their blood will vaporize! It will infect every warrior in this courtyard within seconds!"

Adrian stepped back until his shoulders were nearly touching mine, his sword dripping with black blood as he felled another Shadowclaw assassin. "Can you cure them en masse, Lydia? Or do we fall back into the inner keep?"

"If we fall back, the fog will envelop the lower villages!" I replied, sweat stinging my eyes, my palms raw and shaking. "I have to purge the fog! I have to cleanse the air!"

Patrick cut down a shadow-warrior that had lunged for my flank. He turned toward me, his dark hair plastered to his forehead with sweat and blood, his sharp green eyes wide with panic and a desperation that cut deeper than any blade.

"Lydia, no!" Patrick yelled over the clash of steel. "You can barely stand! Pushing that much light will kill you! Let my warriors handle the front line!"

"Your warriors don't have the light, Patrick!" I shot back, meeting his gaze with unyielding fire. "This is what action meant Patrick! Now watch!"

I didn't wait for his answer. I closed my eyes, turned my face up toward the gray sky, and dove straight into the deepest, darkest depths of my spirit.

The hollow scar where the mate bond had been torn away throbbed with a agonizing, white-hot heat. The rejection, the humiliation, the memory of my sister's laughter, the slaps from my mother, and the heavy iron lock turning on the basement door—all of it rushed through my mind at once. But it didn't break me this time. It became fuel. Every bit of pain, every memory of being called worthless, turned into raw, roaring energy.

*I am not discarded,* my soul screamed into the dark. I am the White Healer!

I slammed both hands onto the cold, blood-stained cobblestones of the courtyard.

What happened next wasn't just a healing spell; it was a domain expansion of pure divine magic.

A pillar of blinding, immaculate white light erupted from my body, shooting straight up into the dark clouds like a spear of sunlight breaking through a storm. The light didn't just glow—it exploded outward in a massive, expanding shockwave of pure energy.

The dark, magic fog dissolved instantly upon contact with the light, burning away like morning mist.

The Shadowclaw assassins shrieked as the holy light touched their skin, their shadow-armor crumbling into ash, exposing them to the steel of the Stormfang and Silverfang warriors. The black-vein poison coating their blades withered and dried up, turning into useless dust.

"Goddess above..." Patrick whispered, dropping his sword by an inch as he stared at me, his face pale with awe and overwhelming regret. He was watching the woman he had called "fatass," the woman he had thrown into the dirt, command the power of a living deity.

The wave of white light swept across the mind-controlled, infected omegas.

They collapsed to their knees in unison. The black, raised veins on their necks sank back under their skin. The milky film over their eyes cleared, replaced by dazed, tearful awareness as the dark spell controlling them was stripped away entirely.

"It's purifying the whole field!" Maya cried out from the doors of the healing wing. "She's healing everyone all at once!"

"Hold the line! Protect her!" Adrian bellowed, his voice echoing over the courtyard as he and his elite guards formed an impenetrable wall of steel around my kneeling form, cutting down the remaining disoriented Shadowclaw assassins.

I kept my hands pressed to the stone, pouring every single drop of my life force into the light.

I felt the poison leave the soil. I felt the air clear. I felt the sick children in the upper wards draw clean, painless breaths. I felt the warriors' superficial wounds knit together as the light washed over them.

‘More,’ my spirit demanded. ‘Cleanse it all.

"Lydia, stop!" Patrick’s voice sounded muffled, as if he were underwater. He rushed toward me, ignoring the danger, dropping to his knees beside me in the light. He reached out, his shaking hands hovering over my shoulders, afraid to touch me, afraid to disrupt the magic. "Lydia, please! Look at your hands! You're burning yourself out!"

I looked down through my blurred vision.

The skin of my palms was cracking, faint wisps of white smoke rising from my fingers. My heart was pounding at a terrifying, erratic speed—*thump... thump... thump-thump...*—before suddenly dropping into a slow, shallow flutter.

I had pushed past my human limits. I had given everything I had to save two packs that had once offered me nothing but pain.

"It's... clean..." I whispered, my voice barely a thread of sound.

The blinding white pillar of light flickered once, twice, and then shattered like glass, vanishing into thin air.

The courtyard was saved. The fog was gone. The Shadowclaw assassins lay defeated or fleeing, and the infected wolves were weeping with relief, restored to health.

I tried to draw a breath, but my lungs refused to expand. The cold stone floor rushed up to meet my face.

"Lydia!"

Patrick’s arms caught me before I hit the ground. He pulled my limp body up against his chest, his hands clutching my face, his thumb brushing away the blood trickling from my nose. His Alpha composure was completely shattered. Tears streamed down his cheeks, washing through the soot and blood on his face.

"No, no, no! Lydia, open your eyes!" Patrick sobbed, pressing his forehead against mine, his voice cracking into a desperate howl. "Don't do this! Don't leave me! Goddess, please, take me instead! Take my life!"

Adrian was beside us in an instant, dropping his sword, his usual calm, strategic demeanor stripped away to reveal raw, unadulterated panic. He pressed two fingers against the side of my neck, searching for a pulse.

His gray eyes went dead and wide.

"Her heart stopped," Adrian whispered, the horror in his voice cutting through the silent courtyard like a death knell. "Her heart stopped beating."

"No!" Patrick screamed, bringing his fist down onto his own chest, sobbing uncontrollably as he cradled my lifeless body against his heart. "LYDIA!"

The wind blew softly across the quiet courtyard, carrying the scent of pine and fresh snow, as the White Healer lay completely still in the arms of the man who had realized her worth far too late.

The surrounding Alphas exchanged terrified, panicked glances, the triumph of purging the Shadow King evaporating in a single heartbeat."That's impossible," Alpha Roderick gritted out, stepping up the dais steps, his hand gripping his sword hilt.
