Julian's POV

I was standing by the apartment door for a long time, looking at the numbers on the wall like I wished this was just a dream. The hall felt too small for my breath, too quiet for the sound in my mind.

Ophelia's note had been bouncing in my head. That note I knew. It wasn’t a note of wishing, not one of worry. It was the note of a person getting ready for their heart to feel pain.

I exhaled once more and knocked.

There was no answer the first time.<

  • Too Late for Regret: My Husband and My Son   293

Vivianne'S POVSeveral weeks had already passed after our marriage. Now I could feel how life started getting back to normality.Every month I visited the hospital to have my checkups but always with positive outcomes. The doctor told me that I recovered very fast.At last, I felt calm again. That morning, Julian asked Maximilian and me to go to the car."Where are we going?" I asked, intrigued.Julian smiled mysteriously. "It's a surprise."Looking at him amused, I replied, "When did you learn how to prepare surprises?""After my wife learned to guess everything."I smiled. Meanwhile, Maximilian in the back of the car was as excited as I was."Dad, are we going to the zoo?""No.""To the beach?""Neither that.""To the toy store?"Julian smiled. "Just wait a little bit."Our ride lasted about forty minutes. Finally, the car stopped in the quiet residenti

Vivianne'S POVI was standing before the entrance of the hotel ballroom, taking a deep breath. The simple white wedding dress I was wearing was falling smoothly down to the floor, without any excessive decorations, only small lace decorations on the sleeves and on the chest area.My hair, which had just started growing after the surgery, was cut in a short, soft hairdo. The scar from the operation was not very visible anymore, being covered with my hairstyle and the small flower accessory.I took one more look in the mirror. Several months ago I could not even imagine how I would stand here now. There had been a moment when I thought my life would end in the hospital room. And today I was standing in front of the ballroom as a woman, about to marry her love."Vivienne."Dominic's voice brought me back from my reflections. I turned my head to him.My older brother was wearing a neat black suit. He was smiling warmly, but there

Vivianne’S POVWhen the promotion ceremony ended, we did not return home right away; we went to the beach which we had not visited for quite some time."Today, we're going to play!" announced Maximilian. Julian just smiled and shook his head."All right, Sir Maximilian. Whatever you say."And I smiled as I watched the two of them. The breeze carried a characteristic scent of the sea.Slow waves started coming to the shore as the afternoon sky started changing into blue and orange. Maximilian was in no hurry at all.As soon as he took off his shoes, he rushed to the shore with the bucket and small shovel bought by Julian at a beach kiosk. "I'm going to build a castle!" he announced happily.Julian and I decided to walk slowly along the shore. Sometimes, the waves reached the tips of my toes, and the feeling was very soothing. At the same time, however, the sight of the sea evoked a memory which had been very painful o

  • Too Late for Regret: My Husband and My Son   290

Vivianne'S POVThree months had gone by all too soon. As I thought about how I had lain there so weakly in the hospital bed in Singapore, it seemed as if I were living some other person's past. Now, I stood in front of the bedroom mirror, brushing down the simple light blue dress I had worn on that morning. I no longer required the headscarf which concealed my scar from the surgery. My hair had been shaved to a short style that had yet to grow back, although the doctor had told me that my healing process had been going as expected. The scar on the side of my head had also started to fade away.A small smile played across my lips as I regarded myself in the mirror. While neither my face nor my body had entirely regained their health, my cheeks were beginning to return to their former fullness. The dark rings under my eyes were starting to fade, too. And most of all, I had been granted the opportunity to be here.It was not just any reg

Vivianne'S POVI slowly opened my eyes.Warming rays of the morning sun illuminated the room through the opening in the curtains. A small smile formed on my lips in the absence of any sound for several seconds. I was finally home.I felt with my hand a cloth that was protecting the place where I had been operated on. The doctor had told me that I still have to visit him regularly for check-ups and I must take care of myself in the next few months. But my way was not over yet. However, the most terrible thing had already passed.Today, I woke up in my home, which I missed a lot.Knock. Knock. The door slowly opened. A small boy peeked into the room with a huge smile on his face."Mommy is awake!"Without waiting for my answer, Maximilian rushed to me. "Mom!"He hugged me gently as if he feared to hurt me. I smiled and hugged him back."Good morning, sweetie.""Good Morning!"Such a happy

Julian'S POVThat evening, the silence in the house prevailed. Maximilian was busy doing his homework at the dining table; he furrowed his brows in concentration while solving his math assignments and then erased all the answers because he believed they were wrong.I was sitting in my study room with the laptop still turned on. But several documents from my company still needed to be written that night, but I simply could not concentrate on my work at all.The time since Vivienne went to Singapore had already passed by nearly one month. Even though Dominic still provided me with some updates, that uneasy feeling was always with me.I was just about to shut down my laptop, when I felt the vibration of my cell phone. On the screen appeared Dominic's name and my heart suddenly beat faster."Hello, Dominic," I rushed to say.On the other side of the line, I heard a much lighter voice of his. "Julian.""I have good news."I instantly got on my feet. "How is Vivienne?"A sigh of relief esca

Julian's POV I stood still. Ophelia's words struck me more deeply than I had anticipated.Ophelia gazed at me softly though faint unvoiced hurts shimmered within her eyes.“I get the sense that I no longer hold a place in your mind.”I hadn’t prepared myself for th

Julian's POV "Come on, child. give dad a tiny hint” my voice broke."Then suddenly, it hit me.There was a different ride, the small kid kind. Safe for little kids. And even if it’s scary, not as high as the tall one.Max may have pointed at the wrong one or Opheli

Julian's POV Damn it. I didn't even know if she'd eaten tonight, if she'd taken her medication. The thought alone was enough to make my stomach feel empty.Suddenly, my phone vibrated on my desk. I glanced over, my heart leaping. But it wasn't her name that appeared. It was just a
