Unbroken

The heavy iron gates clanged shut behind Zayn and his vanguard, the sharp ring echoing off the stone walls like the drop of a blade. The dust raised by their horses had barely settled before the heavy, suffocating silence of the Midnight Pack descended upon the courtyard.

The Elders didn't utter another word. They gathered their thick velvet cloaks in unified, silent condemnation and swept off the stone dais, retreating into the sanctuary of the packhouse.

I stood alone in the center of the ring, flexing my leather wrapped fingers against the biting morning wind. Selene lingered for a fraction of a second longer, throwing me one last icy look before gliding after them, her head held high.

Three days, Ember purred in my mind, her golden fire pacing restless perimeter circles against my ribs. Seventy-two hours while Jaxon bleeds the border and those old wolves plot in the dark.

Let them plot, I thought back, keeping my posture straight as I turned toward the inner archway. We aren't going to sit in a room and wait for them to come to us.

To get to the lower training grounds, I had to walk through the main corridor of the packhouse and across the sprawling lower courtyard. I didn't rush. I kept my chin high, my shoulders square, and my gaze fixed straight ahead, even as the atmosphere around me grew thick with tension.

My enhanced wolf hearing picked up every single whisper, sharp and clear through the morning air.

"She's actually standing there like she belongs here," a young female wolf murmured behind a stone pillar, leaning toward her companion. "She's an exile from Obsidian Moon. She'll be torn apart in the first five minutes of the Crescent Moon trial."

"I wouldn't be so sure," a scar-faced warrior replied, watching me from the armory steps with a slow, contemplative nod. "Did you see how she looked Alpha Zayn in the eye? She didn't flinch when his aura hit the courtyard. Say what you want about her bloodline, but the girl has raw courage."

"Courage won't save her from the Elders," another voice hissed from the shadow of the archway. "She's a curse on Midnight soil."

Ember bared her teeth near the surface of my skin, thriving on the doubt and the fear alike. Let them talk, she growled softly. When the trial comes, we will burn their doubts to ash.

I ignored them all, stepping out of the packhouse perimeter and descending the steep stone steps that led toward the isolated, lower training grounds beneath the shadow of the eastern cliffs.

The lower ring was deserted, a wide expanse of packed dirt, iron daggers, and heavy pine sparring posts, chilled by the mountain draft. I unwrapped my hands, pulled the leather strips tight across my palms until the flesh throbbed, and tied them securely off at my wrists.

"Planning on bleeding out before the trial even starts, Raven?"

The voice was smooth, dripping with poisoned elegance.

I didn't flinch. I finished knotting the leather strip around my left wrist before turning slowly to face Selene. She stood at the edge of the dirt ring, her silk robes sweeping over the frost-bitten ground, her dark eyes glittering with malicious satisfaction. She was entirely alone, having left her entourage behind in the hall.

"The ring is open, Selene," I said, my tone smooth and cold. "If you came here to train, grab a blade. If not, you're blocking my light."

Selene let out a low, breathless laugh, taking a few slow steps into the dirt. "You really are delusional, aren't you? You think because Zayn delayed the trial to fight Jaxon's scouts, he's saving you? He's an Alpha doing his duty to the border. When he gets back, he will watch you fail, just like the rest of us."

"Is that why you came down here?" I asked, stepping closer to her, closing the distance on my own terms. "To convince yourself I'm going to lose? Or are you afraid that if I survive the trial, your place at the Elders' table won't mean a thing?"

Selene’s eyes flashed with instant fury. She took another sharp step into my space, her hand twitching at her side as if she longed to draw a blade and strike me down where I stood. "You are Obsidian trash. You carry the stain of Jaxon’s pack, and the Elders will see to it that the Trial of the Crescent Moon strips every last piece of arrogance from your bones. You won't make it to the second dawn."

She wanted me to snap. She was practically begging me to raise my hand, to give her a reason to scream for the guards and have me executed for striking pack nobility before the trial even began.

Instead, I leaned in slightly, my voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. "Then I suggest you get a front-row seat, Selene. Because if I survive... I’m coming for everyone who helped put me in that ring."

Selene froze, her jaw tightening as she searched my face for any trace of fear. She found none. Realizing she wasn't going to get the reaction she came for, she sneered, pulled her heavy cloak tight around her shoulders, and turned abruptly on her heel, marching back up the path toward the main hall.

“I wanted to tear her throat out,” Ember admitted, her golden light surging wildly beneath my ribs.

“Not yet,” I replied, reaching into the rack and pulling two heavy, perfectly balanced iron daggers into my grip. We save our strength for the arena.

For the rest of the afternoon, I pushed my body to its absolute limit. I moved through the dusty ring like a ghost, the sharp thud of steel carving into pine echoing through the ravine. Sweat soaked through my tunic, my lungs burned from the icy mountain air, and blood began to seep through the white leather wraps across my knuckles. I didn't stop. I worked until my muscles screamed, using every ounce of anger, every whisper from the packhouse, and every bite of Selene’s venom to sharpen my instincts.

By the time the sun began its steep descent behind the purple crags of the peak, casting long, bruised shadows across the valley, the heavy clatter of horse hooves rang out against the stone gates above.

The border party was back.

I slotted the daggers back into the iron rack, wiped the sweat from my brow with the back of my forearm, and walked back up to the central courtyard.

The gates were wide open. Zayn rode at the head of the detachment, mounted on his heavy dark stallion. His dark armor was spattered with fresh blood and ash, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. Behind him, several captured Obsidian Moon rogues were dragged in chains, their heads hanging low.

He had reclaimed the ridge.

As Zayn dismounted, handing the reins to a waiting page, his golden eyes swept across the crowded courtyard. They cut through the gathering crowd of spectators, through the guards, straight to where I stood at the edge of the stone steps.

The bond between us flared. Hot, intense, and demanding.

“The border is secured,” his voice reverberated deep within my mind, a low rumble of dark, victorious satisfaction.

He stalked across the cobblestones toward me, pulling off his heavy leather gauntlets. The aura of battle still hummed around him, sharp and intimidating, causing the surrounding pack members to instinctively step back. But as he stopped directly in front of me, his golden gaze softened by a fraction.

His eyes dropped to my hands, to the blood seeping through the leather wraps around my knuckles before snapping back to mine.

"Time is running out, Raven," Zayn said, his deep voice carrying over the quiet murmur of the yard.

"I'm counting," I met his gaze head on, completely unbothered by the blood on his armor or the heat of his aura.

Zayn stepped half a pace closer, reaching up with a gloved hand to gently brush a strand of sweat-dampened hair away from my forehead. His warm knuckles brushed my cheek, sending a sudden, electric jolt through the link.

"Good," he murmured, his thumb trailing lightly over my cheekbone. "Because the border is quiet now... and your real training starts tonight."

Lessons in the dark The night air hung thick and freezing over the unmapped border zone, the bitter scent of damp soil and iron lingering in my raw throat.Pinned against the rough bark of the massive oak tree, my lungs screamed for oxygen. The tracker’s calloused fingers dug deeper into my windpipe, trapping my head against the wood while the second warrior stepped forward, his blunt iron training blade flashing cold in the moonlight. Panic beat wildly in my chest. I had relied on speed, on agility, on outrunning the shadows and now, trapped with zero leverage, I was entirely at their mercy. Before the second hunter could bring the weapon down, a low, commanding voice cut through the dark like a blade."Enough."The pressure on my throat vanished instantly. The two pack champions stepped back, bowing their heads in unison before melting backward into the tree line.I collapsed onto my knees in the damp moss, coughing violently as cold air rushed into my starved lungs. Training The day slowly crawled into night, every passing hour dragging like a heavy chain. By early evening, Zayn had the maids serve me a dinner of flame-seared flank steak strips paired with salted sweet potato wedges, blistered wild greens and a tall glass of icy, electrolyte infused tonic. I ate every last bite, using the meal to heavily load up on raw protein, iron, slow burning complex carbs. My body needed maximum strength, stamina and explosive energy to survive hours of high speed sprinting and brutal ambushes in the dark forest without my stomach feeling heavy or cramping up mid-stride.Once I finished, I pulled on my gear for the night. I wore a dark charcoal compression long sleeve paired with reinforced black cargo leggings, low profile tactical trail boots and tight double Dutch braids to keep my hair out of my face in the night shadows. The dark, sleek fabric felt like a second skin, giving me full range of motion while blending me into the impending darkness.By 9:0

Seventy two hoursDawn broke over the Midnight peaks in a bleed of ice blue and bruised purple.I stood at the edge of the lower courtyard, the biting morning air stinging my lungs with every deliberate breath. I had bound my wrists in thick leather strips and pulled my hair back tight off my face. My hands trembled so violently that I had to ball them into fists to keep from shaking apart completely. Every memory of the past seven years slammed back into me with fresh poison—every late night waiting for Jaxon to come home, every time he brushed me off in public, every cruel comment from Risa that I had quietly swallowed because I thought I wasn't enough."Raven..." Trophy of spiteThe walk back from the border gates to the main estate was spent in a heavy, suffocating silence. My heart was still hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, echoing the sharp rhythm of my bare feet against the cold, polished stone paths of Midnight Pack. The night air was crisp, carrying the dark scents of pine, crushed earth, and evening dew, but inside my chest, a violent storm was raging.I had stood up to Jaxon. For the first time in seven years, I hadn't cowed under his cold, commanding gaze. I hadn’t winced at the hard, possessive tone that used to make my knees tremble. I had rejected his claim in front of his elite guards, in front of Zayn, and under the gaze of the entire night sky. Deep within me, Ember was resting near the surface of my skin, her spirit humming with a primal, quiet triumph. For seven long years, my wolf and I had been made to feel small, invisible, and utterly disposable. In seven minutes at the iron gate, we had torn Jaxon’s illusion
