LOGINLyra Vale has always been the wolf her pack never wanted. Born into Ashen Moon Pack, she is mocked for remaining wolfless long after others have shifted. When her wolf finally awakens, Lyra hopes her life will change. Instead, Alpha Garrick casts her out, leaving her with nowhere to go. Forced into enemy territory, she meets Kael Draven, the feared Alpha of Nightfang Pack. Their packs have been enemies for years, and Lyra has been taught never to trust his kind. Then she discovers the truth: Kael is her fated mate. But Kael has promised to marry a neighbouring Alpha’s daughter to secure a political alliance. Choosing Lyra could threaten his pack’s safety. Believing duty must come first, he publicly rejects her. Lyra refuses to beg for the love of a man who has chosen duty over her. She tries to build a life beyond the pack that abandoned her, but peace is short-lived. Mysterious attacks strike border settlements, and both packs prepare for war. Lyra notices details others overlook and suspects someone inside Nightfang is manipulating the conflict. Her questions make her a target—and force her to work with Kael, the man who broke her heart. As evidence emerges, Kael must face the cost of his decision. The mate bond draws them together, but it cannot erase his rejection or make Lyra trust him again. She must decide whether helping him can stop a war without sacrificing her independence. With two packs on the brink of destruction, Lyra may be the key to exposing the real enemy. But she will not be anyone’s possession, not even her fated mate’s. Can Kael earn a second chance, and can Lyra choose a love that respects her freedom before their enemies tear both packs apart?
View More“Move, Kyle! Get away from there!”
Lyra's shout cut through the morning noise.
The boy stood frozen beside a fallen tree, staring at the grey wolf blocking his path. Its lips curled back from its teeth. Several young wolves stopped training to watch, but none moved to help.
Lyra dropped her basket and grabbed a fallen branch.
“Stay still, Kyle!”
The wolf turned toward her. She approached carefully, holding the branch in front of her. Without a wolf of her own, she had no enhanced senses or strength to rely on.
She struck the ground.
The wolf lunged.
Lyra jumped aside, but its claws caught her arm. Pain shot through her as she stumbled.
“Run, Kyle!”
He scrambled past her. Before the wolf could attack again, a guard's whistle sounded. The animal hesitated, then disappeared into the forest.
Lyra pressed a hand against her bleeding arm.
“Are you mad?” Rafe demanded.
“Kyle could have been bitten.”
“And what would you have done if it had torn your throat out?”
Lyra glanced at the boy, now safe among the others.
“I'd rather take that chance than watch him get hurt.”
Rafe snorted. “Easy to say when you don't have a wolf to lose.”
The others laughed. Lyra picked up her basket and walked away.
Near the packhouse, Kyle hurried after her.
“Are you angry with me?”
“Why would I be?”
“I didn't run when you told me to.”
“Then listen next time.”
He glanced at her bandage. “My brother says you don't have a wolf because you're not a proper member of the pack.”
“How old is your brother?”
“Fourteen.”
“Old enough to know that being cruel doesn't make him clever.”
Kyle considered this before asking, “Will your wolf ever come?”
“I don't know.”
“But you want it to?”
“Of course.”
He smiled and ran off.
Lyra continued toward the packhouse, tired of answering questions about the wolf that had never come.
“Lyra Vale.”
Alpha Garrick stood near the steps with two guards.
“Come here.”
She approached him. “Yes, Alpha?”
“I hear you interfered with the wolf this morning.”
“I helped Kyle escape.”
“You put yourself in danger. You have no wolf and no proper combat training, yet you act as though you can do what the others do.”
“I was trying to help someone.”
“Good intentions won't protect this pack,” Garrick replied. “You need to understand your limitations.”
“I understand.”
“Do you? You seem determined to become a problem I must eventually deal with.”
Her fingers tightened around the basket.
“Am I being punished?”
“Not today.”
He turned back to the guards.
Lyra left without another word.
At the healer's room, Mara immediately noticed the blood on her sleeve.
“What happened?”
“Nothing serious.”
“Sit down.”
Mara cleaned the cut and wrapped it with fresh cloth.
“Is Kyle all right?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Lyra watched her finish the bandage. “Why does everyone act as though I've done something wrong?”
“Perhaps they're more concerned with criticising you than admitting nobody else stepped forward.”
“Garrick could hear you.”
“I'm aware.”
Mara sat across from her.
“You cannot spend your whole life trying to earn a place among people who refuse to make room for you.”
Lyra looked down at her bandage. “Do you think my wolf will ever come?”
“I don't know. No one can promise you that. But whatever happens, you still have choices.”
Lyra nodded and left after Mara finished treating her arm.
On her way back to her room, she heard voices coming from the council room.
“The incident this morning proves my point,” Garrick said. “She has no understanding of her limitations.”
Beta Ronan answered, “She was trying to protect the boy.”
“And nearly got herself killed.”
Lyra stopped outside the open doorway.
“What do you intend to do with her?” Ronan asked.
“I've allowed this situation to continue long enough. The pack cannot keep carrying someone who may never be able to defend herself.”
“She has lived here all her life.”
“And that is why I've been patient.”
Lyra tightened her grip on the basket.
“What are you saying?” Ronan asked.
“If her wolf doesn't manifest soon, we will have to reconsider her place in this pack.”
Lyra stepped back, her heel catching a loose stone.
It struck the floor with a sharp click.
The voices stopped.
“Who's there?” Garrick demanded.
Lyra turned to leave, but the door opened before she could move.
Beta Ronan stood in the doorway.
“Lyra?”
Behind him, Garrick rose from his chair.
She looked from one man to the other. There was no pretending she hadn't heard.
She had heard what he intended to do.
And now he knew it.
Lyra barely waited for Kael's permission before heading towards the western gate.“Lyra, wait.”She stopped when Kael caught up with her.“You don't know who is waiting outside,” he said.“The guard said her name is Mara.”“And anyone could use that name.”Lyra swallowed her impatience. He was right. The last thing they needed was to walk into another trap.Kael signalled to the guards.“Open the smaller gate. Keep the main entrance secured.”Two warriors moved into position while Ronan approached from behind.“I'll come with you,” he said.Together, they stepped outside.A woman stood several feet from the entrance, her dark cloak dusty from the journey. Her hair was partly covered, and one sleeve had been torn near the elbow. But Lyra recognised her immediately.“Mara?”The woman lifted her head.“Lyra.”Lyra rushed towards her, then stopped just before embracing her.“What happened? We were told you were no longer in Ashen Moon.”Mara glanced at Kael and the warriors.“Perhaps we s
Kael stood over the remaining documents, reading the same line for the third time. The correspondence box had vanished, and whoever had taken it had known exactly what they wanted. But one letter remained. He held it beneath the desk lamp, examining the faded handwriting. The paper was old. There was no seal, only a name written at the bottom. Alpha Garrick. Kael's expression hardened. “Garrick?” Lyra, standing opposite him, looked up. “Ashen Moon's Alpha?” “Yes.” She stepped closer. “Then he was the one who warned your father?” “That is what this letter suggests.” Kael placed the document on the desk. The letter was dated three winters ago, two days before the northern patrol was ambushed. Its message was brief. Garrick had warned Kael's father that someone was leaking patrol information and advised him to postpone the northern assignment. But the final paragraph was what caught Lyra's attention. I cannot trust the people around me. If anything happens to my messenger
Darius read the message twice. They found the warning. Move before they do.He held the paper over the flame of his desk candle. The edges caught fire, curling inward until the words disappeared beneath the smoke. For several seconds, he watched the ashes fall. Then he rang the small bell beside his desk.A guard entered.“Send word to Captain Varek. I want to see him tonight.”The guard hesitated. “Captain Varek is being held under watch, sir.”“Then find someone who can deliver a message without attracting attention.”“Yes, sir.”“And make sure nobody knows you came here.”The guard bowed and left.Darius leaned back in his chair.Kael had found the letter. That was unfortunate, but not yet disastrous. The document was old, and an old warning did not prove who had betrayed the patrol. What mattered was ensuring they never found the rest.Lyra was still in Kael's office when Ronan arrived.“I've arranged for a messenger to travel to Ashen Moon,” he said. “He can deliver a letter to M
Lyra read the note again.Ronan was not the only one who knew. Ask Kael what his father was hiding.Beneath the words was a single name.Mara.She folded the paper carefully, but her fingers remained tense.Mara had helped her when everyone else had turned away. She had treated her wounds, given her food and a cloak, and risked trouble by helping her cross the border. Why would she send a message like this now?And how had it reached Nightfang territory?“You're still holding it.”Kael's voice came from the doorway.Lyra looked up. He had entered without her noticing, his expression fixed on the paper in her hand.“I was going to find you.”He approached. “What happened?”She handed him the note. His eyes moved across the words. When he reached the signature, his expression changed.“Mara?”“You know her?”“Not personally. But I know she was one of Ashen Moon's healers.”“She helped me before I crossed the border.”Kael looked at her. “Could she have written this?”“I don't know.”“Wo
