Chapter 2

Autor: Codfish
For a moment, they all fell silent.

Then they burst into laughter.

"You?" Marianne laughed so hard she had to lean against Elio's shoulder. "Where exactly does that sign have your name on it? Do you even know who Mrs. Costa is? You must be really desperate for money if you're willing to impersonate her."

Of course, I knew who Mrs. Costa was.

Renato was my husband.

And the woman they had all come to the harbor to receive was already standing right in front of them.

Marianne, completely oblivious, kept talking. "Don Costa is one of the most feared men in the underworld. Everyone knows that. And ever since he met his Donna, he hasn't so much as looked at another woman. From what I've heard, he absolutely adores his wife.

"Do you have any idea how many people would do anything for a chance to impress Mrs. Costa? Getting close to her means getting close to the Costa family.

"The fact that Don Ricci was personally asked to welcome Mrs. Costa at the harbor should tell you everything you need to know. The Costa family clearly holds the Riccis in high regard."

The contempt in her eyes made it clear she thought I was too ignorant to understand any of this.

"Everyone in our circles heard what happened just last month. Don Costa spent five million dollars at an auction on an antique ruby ring, all because he wanted to make his wife happy."

Hearing her talk about Renato softened something inside me.

That ridiculous man.

I'd told him more than once that I didn't need expensive gifts, but Renato had never been particularly good at listening when it came to spoiling me.

Then Marianne's gaze suddenly dropped to my hand.

Her smile vanished.

"Wait."

Her eyes widened as she stared at the ruby on my finger.

"What is that?" she shrieked and lunged forward, grabbing my hand.

Everyone froze.

Heads turned in our direction as the ruby caught the sunlight, flashing a brilliant crimson.

"Wait… Could she really be…" someone murmured.

But one look at Elio's darkening expression was enough to make him swallow the rest of the sentence.

Elio sneered. "Four years apart, and this is what you've become? So desperate to impress people that you'd wear a cheap imitation just to get my attention? Stella, you've really disappointed me."

Marianne immediately followed his lead. Just like old times, she never missed an opportunity to humiliate me.

"You must've gone to a lot of trouble finding such a convincing fake. But I suppose a knockoff suits a woman like you. As for the real ruby? You'd be lucky to see something like that once in your life."

She shoved my hand away.

I wasn't expecting the force behind it. I stumbled backward, and my lower back slammed hard against the railing.

Pain shot through me.

I sucked in a sharp breath and steadied myself before looking coldly at Marianne. "This ring was a gift from Renato."

Elio's expression changed.

"Are you out of your mind?" he snapped.

Before I could react, Marianne stormed forward and slapped me across the face. "You stupid woman! How dare you call the Don by his first name? If you have a death wish, fine, but don't drag the rest of us down with you!"

My ears were still ringing from the slap, and before I could recover, Marianne's shrill voice cut through the air again.

"I thought wearing a fake ring was just another pathetic attempt to get Elio's attention. But you're actually trying to pass yourself off as Mrs. Costa? Stella, you're delusional!

"You're nothing more than the woman Elio threw away four years ago. What makes you think a man like Don Costa would ever want you?"

The delight in Marianne's eyes was impossible to miss.

Humiliating me in front of Elio had always seemed to be one of her favorite pastimes.

Elio glanced at me with casual disdain. "If you're so determined to come back to me, then start by getting rid of that attitude of yours.

"Don Costa's welcome reception is tomorrow night. Everything has to be perfect. I'm willing to let you attend and see how people in our world actually live, but consider this your one chance.

"If you embarrass me in front of the Costa family, you don't even know what the consequences will be."

Marianne rolled her eyes. Then she reached up, removed a pair of pearl earrings, and hurled them at me.

"Look at you. It's embarrassing. Keep them. At least you won't have to show up tomorrow wearing fake jewelry."

One of the earrings struck my cheek before clattering onto the pavement.

A faint sting followed, and when I touched the spot, a tiny smear of blood appeared on my fingertips.

No one moved.

They were waiting for me to crouch down and pick up Marianne's discarded earrings. Waiting to watch me swallow my pride for a piece of jewelry before laughing at me all over again.

I didn't give them the satisfaction.

I calmly wiped the bead of blood from my cheek.

"No, grazie," I said coolly. "I don't accept charity from strangers."

Marianne's smile stiffened.

I had no interest in wasting another second arguing with people who had already decided what they wanted to believe.

Ignoring the fury spreading across Elio's face, I turned and walked away without looking back.

Tomorrow night's reception couldn't come soon enough.

On that, at least, we could all agree.

I froze.I lowered my head and gently rested my palm against my lower abdomen.I couldn't feel anything. All I felt was the warmth beneath my palm. But I knew a baby was growing inside me, coming into my life just like Chiara had.Tears welled up in my eyes as I turned my head toward Teresa. I couldn't stop myself from smiling."Does Renato know yet?" I asked softly, my voice trembling with excitement.Teresa shook her head. Her face lit up with joy as she took my hand and held it tightly."Don Costa doesn't know yet. Before he left, he said he had something to take care of and would be back later."It was probably something to do with the Ricci family. I knew how much Renato cared about me. I could imagine how worried and furious he must have been the moment he saw me collapse.I nodded, unable to hide the smile in my eyes."When he gets back, I'm going to tell him myself."…That very night, I learned that every business partner across the Riccis' territory had cut off the

Watching the three of us wrapped up in our own little world, Elio stood off to the side, his eyes red with rage.Renato let go of my hand and walked over to Elio. He stopped right in front of him and fixed him with a cold, hard stare."There's no point in trying to drive a wedge between us. Stella already chose me."Renato sneered. "I've known about your dirty past for a long time. You betrayed your then-girlfriend and fathered a child with your widowed sister-in-law. But I never imagined that my Stella had been hurt by a piece of trash like you."Chiara shouted angrily from beside us, "Bah! Mommy would never want you! A stupid man like you could only have a stupid child!""What did you just say?"Marianne showed up out of nowhere. The moment she heard what Chiara had said, her face twisted with fury."My son is the heir to the Ricci family! You little brat! How dare you insult my son like that?" she shrieked. She suddenly lunged at Chiara, her sharp nails reaching for the litt

Elio led us into the yacht's medical room. The doctor cleaned my wound, applied medicine, and bandaged it.Chiara leaned over the armrest of the couch, her little face scrunched up with worry. "Mommy, don't worry," she whimpered softly. "Let me blow on it for you."Renato sat beside me, his eyes locked on my injured hand. The sheer force of his intimidating glare had the doctor breaking out in a cold sweat.I couldn't help but smile when I looked at the anxious father-daughter duo in front of me. This was a man who wouldn't so much as flinch if he took a bullet. Yet here he was, completely on edge over a scratch on me."Don't worry. I'm not as fragile as you think," I reassured him."I know you're tough, but I can't just stand by and watch you get hurt." Renato slipped an arm around my shoulders, his voice low as he whispered in my ear.Elio stood at the doorway, his expression growing more irritated by the second.Only after Renato had made sure my hand was properly bandaged

The Riccis were terrified when they heard what I said. Especially those who had once stood behind Elio, laughing at me and humiliating me. They remembered how they had mocked me over the years, saying I was so desperate to become Donna that I shamelessly clung to Elio. When Elio wasn't around, they had made things difficult for me time and again. They had humiliated me and made me look like a fool in front of everyone, just because of something Marianne had said. They had never thought much of me anyway.Even after four years, they still assumed I'd come back for Elio. They would never believe that I had become the Donna of the Costa family.Even after seeing the ruby ring on my finger and hearing me say I was the Mrs. Costa they were looking for, they still didn't believe me. Naturally, not a single one of them stepped in to stop Marianne as she heaped abuse on me.As for Elio, he took his family's side, just as he always did. In the past, he had dismissed every grievance I'd

Renato strode toward us, but before I could react, Elio stepped directly into his path. He cleared his throat and put on his most polished smile."Don Costa, it's an honor to welcome you to our city. The entire Ricci family is grateful for your presence. I'm Elio Ricci, head of the Ricci…"The rest of his introduction died in his throat.Renato didn't stop. In fact, he barely seemed to notice Elio was there. Without breaking stride, he simply walked around him and came straight to me."Stella." The instant he reached me, the cold authority in his expression melted away. His gaze softened."You look beautiful, amore. Just like always."His voice was quiet, but Elio heard every word.He spun around to stare at me.I watched the realization dawn on his face, followed almost immediately by disbelief. He understood what was happening. He simply couldn't bring himself to believe it.The rest of the guests were still trying to make sense of the scene when a tiny blur of pink sudd

The following evening, I stepped aboard the yacht where Renato's welcome reception was being held.I spotted Elio almost immediately. He stood among a cluster of guests with a glass of wine in his hand, laughing and talking as if he owned the place. As if he sensed me watching, he glanced over. For one fleeting second, surprise flashed in his eyes.I looked nothing like the understated woman he'd seen at the harbor yesterday. Tonight, I wore a floor-length red gown with my curls falling loosely over my shoulders. The gown was Renato's favorite.Elio's gaze lingered before he finally walked over. "Looks like you took my advice after all."His arrogant expression returned as though that brief moment of admiration had never happened."If you'd listened to me four years ago, you wouldn't have spent all this time struggling on your own. At least you've finally learned where you belong."Marianne has already given the Ricci family its heir. But if you behave tonight and don't cause m
